A digression from Bettyville business as I am sad about all this Indiana business:

All during my childhood, I watched my father smile and joke with all the customers who came into my family's business--a small-town lumber yard. I don't recall him asking them about their politics or their sex lives. He just did his best to get along and make a buck. I think he thought of it as good business. Most people in similar positions spend their lives trying to get along with their customers. Throughout my career, I have worked with a lot of people I didn't much like. I have watched straight people have affairs in the office with bosses and seen people lie and cheat and behave in all sorts of ways I didn't like. But it was not my choice not to work with them or behave in ways that would exacerbate our differences. I just don't think that most people of any kind have the luxury of deciding who they do business with or work with. Most people have learned to get along. For generations, gay people have done business with those who they know disdain them, who on occasion humiliate them with small innuendos or more blatant kinds of harassment. But they have been forced to get along, sometimes making compromises. I think everyone should, on the face of it, be able to choose who they do or don't do business with, what cakes they bake, but if you ostracize one group and try to make that legal, where does it stop? After the gays, is it the Jews or the Muslims or the atheists or the Christians or the "enemies" of whomever is in power who will be denied service at restaurants or care by ambulance personnel? Again, where does it stop? In a complicated, pluralistic society, can we start unraveling the strings that hold us together for the sake of those who cannot conform to the notion of unity and the politicians who choose to advance themselves by increasing and exploring division? Is the unity of the country worth sacrificing because you think you can't serve a burger to someone different than you without compromising your faith? State-sanctioned discrimination will destroy this country.

Thank you so much Lisa Laporto and the entire staff of Barnes and Noble in Columbia, Steve Weinberg, Carol Crigler, Cinda Baker, and all the people who came out to create such a loving, happy, fun occasion. I think Betty had a great time.

George Hodgman Bettyville Book Signing 3.28.15

Photos from the amazingly successful reading and signing of the NYT best-selling memoir #bettyville by George Hodgman in Columbia, MO. The store manager, Tim, told me they estimated 275 people were at the reading - largest they've ever had by far. SO many wonderful people came down from Paris and Madison, MO, two small hometowns at the heart of Bettyville. UPDATE 3.29.15 -- Add more photos of Raj's arrival in stills pulled from my video. Check back soon for video early this afternoon.

If you liked Bettyville and are inclined, this might be a nice moment to write a review on Amazon or Goodreads. If you read it and didn't like it, this might be a nice time for a long nap.
