This Book Will Riot Your World - My Advanced Review of “Grrrls On The Side”, by Carrie Pack

hazelandglasz:

Let me start by stating the obvious :

I am not American.

(Shocker? Really?)

I just point that out to say that the 90s were vastly different in Europe (at least in France) than it was in the U.S.

So to say that I was very interested in @carriepack new novel would be an understatement, both on an intellectual point of view and a personal one.

See, having fat, bisexual character as the lead of a book is not something I’m used to, and definitely something I could have used when I...

Riot Grrrls and Trigger Warnings

My novel Grrrls on the Side, (Duet, June 8, 2017), takes place during the Riot Grrrl movement of the early to mid-’90s. The young women who considered themselves Riot Grrrls were feminists, activists and artists. They participated in the punk scene, created zines, marched on Washington, spoke out about rape culture, and demanded to be heard. But like many young women and teens, they were often derided for their choices and for daring to speak out.

It was an imperfect movement that was often c...

This Book Will Make You Rebel : An Advanced Review of Carrie Pack’s Grrrls On The Side

hazelandglasz:

This book took me back 20 years or so ago and yet every emotion rung contemporary and true.

Carrie Pack @carriepack does a wonderful job in pulling the reader into Tabitha’s world, her mind, her worries and her growth.

Many Tabithas and Jackies are today’s leaders of the resistance against injustice.

A lot of moments in the book felt like Pack had a time machine to my own teenage years, so it only increased my own appreciation of the story. That being said, as a European woman, a...

“I’m not this sex-crazed maniac or anything, but I’m a human being. I think about sex. Girls think about sex. Sometimes a lot. I hate this idea that boys are thinking about sex nonstop and girls are thinking about – what? Stationary and garden gnomes? No.”

buckylouie:

Shoutout to fat girls in the summertime. Shoutout to fat girls who wear jeans even though it’s 90 degrees because they don’t like the way their legs look. Shoutout to fat girls who wear a t-shirt to swim because they don’t like the way people look at their stretch marks. Shoutout to fat girls that only wear dresses with sleeves because they don’t like that their arms aren’t perfectly proportioned. Shoutout to fat girls who wear cardigans with button-downs because they don’t like th...

do you know of any lgbt books with fat sapphics in them?

I do in YA! Check out The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember and Grrrls on the Side by Carrie Pack (which releases in about a week). Anyone know of any others in books older than YA? I keep wanting to suggest Thea de Salle’s books because she has both fat and Sapphic MCs but I don’t think she has one who’s both…

Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee

Welcome to Andover… where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, who...
