color, Beauty, India

Natural ElementsI'm so excited. In just 20 days the Natural Elements giveaway begins. I'm looking forward to sharing this YA novel with others who have an interest in exploring faraway lands, culture, food, and family life. Natural Elements, the story of a young biracial woman who is trying to find herself in a culture where skin color means everything,is my first published book. It has taken me over ten years to complete it. Although I am glad the long hours of writing are over, I must admit I miss being with my characters. Geeta has become a good friend and I miss going on an adventure with her, the sights, sounds and smells of India, taking me back to my own trip there long ago. So as the countdown begins I hope you take the journey and explore Geeta's world. See Bombay, India from the prospective of an 18 year old who is trying to find her own niche in society.

Not just another day

It's Friday! And although I started my day at 4:50 AM, getting ready for dialysis,I am finally free to relax. Sitting in my chair this morning, starting a new novel by Alexander McCall Smith while the machine spun around and around-- I laughed aloud at Mma Ramotswe and her new adventure. Mr. Smiths' The No. 1 Detective Agency series never fails to put me in a good mood. Not even the pain of the needles can distract me from having a good laugh at Mma Ramotswe's expense.

A Good Day at Dialysis

Today was a good day at dialysis. Usually I don't sleep for the 3 1/2 hours I'm there. I sit and watch HGTV and CNN news. But today was different. Maybe it was warmer today. I didn't need the three blankets I normally have and still can't get warm. The center is cold, and like most other folks I'm bundled up--hat or scarf, a glove and a sweater or sweatshirt. We try to keep our minds off the treatment--us dialysis folks. Hard to do with two needles stuck in your arm and a machine that pumps out your blood. We make the most of it I guess. Gone are the days of burgers and fries now that we are no longer at the hospital and at the new center. I personally have always stuck with a simple snacks--pop-tarts, fruit snacks, grapes. Being new to this I follow the guidelines, but the smell of fries--gosh, it's enough to drive you nuts. People were upset at first about having to leave the hospital. But now we all seem o.k. with the change. After all it's cleaner and doesn't have that hospital smell. I'm on the list for a new kidney. "Any day now," Dr. Gil says. I hope he's right. But until then I'll sit and watch HGTV underneath the warmth of my blankets. Maybe I'll bring popcorn on Friday.
