Books

How many will I read this year? I’m not sure. I strive for two a month, but I don’t always make it with work and writing. I’m starting off with two books I’m carrying over from last year. Blue Skies is one of them. I’m about 40% done. So far it’s okay. I’ve read books by the author before and enjoyed them.

“What do you want to mean?”

image

Dylan stood
outside Sixers watching as bodies were taken away. Claudia hadn’t called or
texted her yet so she either wasn’t aware of what was going on or Kyra had
already let her know she was okay.

Dylan threaded her
way through the crowd when she spied Rowel coming out on the heels of the
coroner. He was a member of Snow Fur, a coyote pack they were now allied with.

The alliance was
still too new to test, but she had to see if he could get her inside. She’d use
the alpha mate card if necessary.

The reporter,
Fray, moved in quickly to pounce on him, and Dylan was on her heels when she
spied Tana coming out of the club with a man. She spoke to him for several
moments before he walked away, and Tana headed back inside.

Dylan threaded her
way through the crowd, managing to get past a couple of cops. Inside, Dylan
looked around for Tana, but she didn’t see her which was probably a good thing.

She scanned the room still full of patrons. Some
were at the back playing darts while others sipped beers at the bar. She didn’t
see Kyra and wondered if she’d left before this had all broken out.

It would be nice,
she mused as she tripped up to the second floor. From the doorway, Dylan saw
Tana, back to her, hand on her hip as she surveyed something.

Tana bent down out
of sight behind the old couch, and she let out a startled cry and something hit
the floor.

“Shit.” The coyote
half of Dylan came quickly awake sensing a predator.

“Lena,” Tana
murmured. “I thought you were dead.”

“So did he,” she
rasped out. “He tricked me. Son of a bitch, he was working with me against
Russo, or so I thought.”

Dylan pulled up
short to peer down at the two women. Her coyote was on edge as it observed the
clawed hand around Tana’s throat. The bloody nails bespoke of a fight as did
the red stains on her clothes and the bullet holes that riddled her body.

“Who are you
talking about?” Tana asked gently. “Who was behind this?”

“Iron Capsule,”
she said and grimaced. “He wanted to take me out, so he can have Snowbury all
to himself. Someone in my organization betrayed me. He laughed, but he didn’t
tell me who it was. He just said this had all been possible thanks to two
coyotes, one in Mist and one in Mystic Snow, and they were working with a Snow
Dog wolf. Probably Patrick.”

“Are you certain?”
Tana asked. She was holding the dying woman’s other hand.

Dylan could smell
the fetid scent of death already claiming her as the body slowly shut down. Not
every shifter could distinguish the scent of the dying versus the scent of the
dead, but she’d never had a problem telling the difference.

“Your town is in
danger. Russo will destroy to claim it,” she said in a whisper. “I wouldn’t
have done that, but Iron Capsule might as he fights it out with Russo.
Summerfield is in the most immediate danger. She’s seen as the biggest threat,
next to Mayer.”

“I have the son in
jail.”

“Jeno’s in New
York, but he’ll send someone to handle things here. He wants this town as a
power base, but Iron Capsule already has it. He thinks he can make it a shifter-only
town run by him,” Lena said. “It’s going to be one hell of a fight, and I hate
I’ll miss it. Take this—it’s your ticket to the game.”

Lena pressed
something into Tana’s hand, but Tana didn’t look at it. Dylan immediately
started devising ways of gaining the information.

“What is it?” Tana
asked softly.

There was a
cryptic smile on her face. “Seek and ye shall find,” she said and for a moment humor
and excitement sparked in her eyes. “If you’re half the woman my jackal thinks
you are, you’ll enjoy this fight as much as I would have.”

Dylan sensed
rather than saw the tension in her ex’s body and for a moment the room was
silent but for Lena’s ragged breaths.

“Thank you,” Tana
said.

The dying woman merely blinked before drawing
in a breath. Her eyes slowly closed, and her head lolled to one side.

“Goodness,” Tana
said and pushed to her feet. Dylan gave her a hand from behind and Tana walked
a few steps from her before facing her.

It was like a
punch in the gut, Dylan decided as their eyes met. It had been like that the
first time she’d met those blue eyes set in the smooth brown face. The long
black lashes lowered for a moment and rose again.

The blue depths, she called them blue agate
eyes because they were a mixture of white and blue unlike any she’d ever seen
in her life. They were mysterious, moody eyes. The eyes of an alpha snow
coyote.

Those eyes watched
her with no emotion at all and that hurt. It was as if earlier hadn’t even
happened.

“What are you
doing up here, Dylan?” Tana demanded, one hand sliding into her pants pocket as
if she wanted to hide the item Lena had given her from Dylan.

“What did she give
you?” Dylan asked softly, taking a step toward her, and Tana stepped back.

“You do realize I
could have you arrested, right?” Tana asked coolly. “You shouldn’t be up here
trampling on my crime scene.”

“Tana—”

“I’m working,
Dylan,” she cut in quickly.

“I get that you’re
in lady-of-the-manor mode, but do you have to act like I mean shit to you?”

“What do you want
to mean?” Tana asked with a frown. “I know you’re only coming on so strong
because Claudia doesn’t trust me to do my job.”

“That’s not true,”
Dylan insisted sharply.

“Then ask me if
I’m okay. Ask me if she hurt me. Better yet, tell me you still want me as much
as ever and you want to see me again.”
