Why Do We Choose To Suffer? – Dialectic Two Step

Question: Why do we choose to suffer?

Response: We don’t. It sounds fairly ridiculous that someone would choose suffering. We suffer because of our choices. The choices that lead to suffering are made on faulty expectations. It’s indirect. We choose things to make us happy. We choose to go on a diet to lose weight. We choose marriage to make love last. We choose a religion to reconnect with the divine.

Our suffering comes because we discover that achieving happiness, healthiness, and good relationships isn’t as simple as choosing and having it. We have to work at it. We succeed sometimes and we fail others.

It’s not a matter of choosing suffering or not. If it were that simple, then suffering would not exists. But, as you should realize, It’s just not that simple.

Which God is the Right One? – Modern Koans

Question:

Since there are so many religions, which god is most likely to be the right god?

Response:

The one that behaves and exists in the same way that the God we observe does. So far no religion has come close to describing that God. Maybe you should look to a religion that doesn’t describe God?

Modern Koans is an ongoing series that recognizes that good questions are often more important than their answers.

Minute Meditations is an ongoing series of short videos, poems, and commentary intended as a meditation.  Offered as an opportunity to step back from your cyber routine and settle into a more natural rhythm, if only for a minute.

These videos are produced for those of us who spend an inordinately large amount of time in the cyber-world.  They are not a substitute for unplugging from your devices and taking a stroll near trees, water, or a patch of unkempt grass.  Getting out into the world - touching, smelling, hearing, and seeing nature is the best way to reconnect with our prime purpose.

What is our prime purpose? We are feeling and sensing machines.  We are the universe looking back on itself. We are witness to the wonders and dangers of living in this corner of the cosmos.  We are the seekers looking for connection a little further beyond yesterday's borders and boundaries.

But sitting and staring at the screen robs us of the sustenance that we rely upon for wonder and sanity.  These videos are an opportunity to bring the sensations of nature to you, while you're in the cyber-world. Its an opportunity to relax your gaze, resettle your posture,  and regain some depth in your breath.  Listen and watch the video and allow your self to open up and recharge.

Bigots? – Thoughts On American Ideals

None of us, including people we find to be bigots, are defined by an opinion on a single issue. Everyone is important to us as a part of the interdependent web of life that sustains us.Andrew Furst
