Immersed
And there was
the day
when I had been drowning
for so long.
Barely breathing,
choosing the struggle.
Then
I looked
at my brother
sleeping
on the cold hard ground
below me.
I would have
marveled
at his ability to float,
If I hadn’t’ve found myself
feet on the ground.
Breathing.

An Anti-manifesto Project – Privilege

As part of my anti-manifesto project I sought the perspective of others on the following questions:
How likely is it you are fully aware of the extent of your own privilege?Share one reason why you’ve chosen your score (awareness of your own privilege)Here are some findings and some inspiration that I’ve found by taking in your perspective.
NOTE: as more data come in the illustrations on this page may transform. The commentary I’m providing is as of January 2021.
Reasons for ProbabilityPerception of privilege seems murky. People appear to give the same reasons for certainty and doubt. For example the reasons “I am white” and “I live in a bubble of privilege” appear at every interval of self assessed probability.
The distribution of self-assessed probability that we are fully aware of our own privilege is fairly normal. As of this date, there is a slight leaning towards certainty of full awareness.
The responses show a variation of a bell curve, where the number of people at the two extremes is low
0 = no likelihood I am fully aware
1 = certainty that I am fully aware
More prominent is the centrist position, that is doubt about awareness of our own privilege.
I’m taking away some inspiration for future art pieces the following questions:
What is it about the people at the extremes? What does certainty have to do with reality? What are the consequences of having your mind made up? What’s the Rationale?People did gravitate to a few key reasons for their self-assessment of privilege. “I live in a bubble of privilege” and “I am white” were prominent. This is probably a consequence of the fact that my circle of responders reflects my own echo chamber. I am a left wing middle aged white man.
The bubble chart displays the prevalence of the types of responses. The size of each bubble illustrates the number of people who felt this was an important rationale for making their self assessment of privilege. This visualization inspired a few ideas shown in the gallery above
