Your first impression is rarely the most accurate

We all judge each other. Its a constant internal conversation with ourselves--who, what, where, when, why, and will he mug me? Some of that is probably wise, but our first impression of someone is rarely accurate.

The Oddest Muses (by Ralene Burke)

Writers will always tell you that they often get their stories in the most unusual places: dreams, road trips, news stories, even ideas that suddenly hit while on the toilet or taking a shower or driving down the road. I am no different, that’s for sure. I’ve always wanted to be a writer—always been a storyteller. But it wasn’t until I was about 22 and …

Is a writer responsible for what her character says?

I was reading a review on Avengers: Age of Ultron the other day, a I ran across a comment from someone who was really angry about the film because of a statement one of the characters makes about not being able to have children. It’s one of the many heart-tugging moments in the movie where Natasha Romanov (aka Black Widow) and Dr. Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk) are …

15min Photo Session No. 1

I love photography. I’m not very good at it, but it makes me happy. Any photo I take that even comes out remotely nice is probably due to my swanky, fancy Nikon! I decided to start sharing my photographs on here, just because life is so short and God’s blessed me with so many beautiful things to take pictures of. I take a 15-minute break from …

How to keep a taste of summer in a jar

Autumn is falling on Kansas pretty steadily this year, which is somewhat unusual. Fall is my favorite season, and we don’t often have a marked space of time where we can enjoy it. So I’m running around all over outside enjoying the chill in the air and the need for a light jacket! But here at Safe Haven Farm, even when fall’s chill or winter’s frigid …

If all your life is checking boxes, you’ll never learn

Life lessons build on each other. They aren't just contained in little check boxes that you mark off and forget about. Life lessons travel with you for the rest of your life. That's kind of how wisdom works.

Choice is part of life you can’t escape

Not all choices directly affect your future, but many of them do. And if you don't get into the habit of making wise choices while you're young, you start paying the consequences when you get older. But the trouble I always run into is choosing between several good options.

So about that Guatemala book …

For the last month I’ve been pretty much locked in my office working on revisions to my space opera sequel. Namesake, the second book in the Destiny Trilogy, isn’t the hardest book I’ll ever write, but it definitely ranks as the most difficult one I’ve written yet. My beta readers have it currently, and in a few weeks, once I get their comments back, I’ll …
