ExcerptMcTartan’s was a popular hangout for the students and the place was full. Toby pushed past the people waiting to be served at the bar. Several of them sent nervous glances at his surly face and tattooed arms and shifted aside to let him through. He found two seats in a booth at the back, away from the noisy crowd at the bar, and they sat on opposite sides of the wooden table.“What’ll you drink?” he drawled. Estelle looked around. Toby had chosen a good spot for their conversation. The partitions on the sides of the booth gave them privacy. Toby sat facing the door, alert for any trouble. His eyes moved to check each person entering the pub. “I’ll have a coke. Don’t want you to be hassled because I’m under the legal age for alcohol.” “Worried the bad gangster will corrupt you?” he teased, leaning forward with his arms crossed and his elbows on the table. Leaving him in suspense, she scanned his face. His heavy brows and the brooding curl of his mouth combined with his muscular build and tattoos gave the impression of an ugly customer. Close up, she noticed the tiny gold flecks in his dark brown eyes. Despite his reputation as a tough gangster, he had been gentle with her. “No,” she said. “I think you’re sweet.” His eyes widened and he leaned back. His voice was sharp with surprise. “You’re the first person ever to call me sweet!” Happy to have scored a hit, Estelle grinned at him. “Better get the drinks.” He swaggered to the bar, shouldering past the other customers. They stepped aside, wary of his sturdy build and swarthy brows. A few minutes later, Toby strolled back to the table, carrying two glasses of dark liquid. He resumed his seat at the back of the booth, leaning his elbows on the table and watching the door. “Okay, Toby, are you going to tell me the truth?” Estelle asked, leaning over the table towards him.He cocked an eyebrow and drawled, “Where can I start?” “The superpowers and the mantis fights,” she suggested eagerly. His eyes flicked to the door and he said, “Your army pal walked in. Think he’s looking for you?” Automatically, she glanced round and saw Mark Copper standing at the bar. He was looking at the rows of bottles on the shelves, presumably selecting his drink. His hand covering his mouth, Toby muttered, “Don’t stare. Pretend you don’t see him. We don’t want him listening to our conversation or trying to join us.” Copying Toby’s caution in hiding her lips behind her fingers, Estelle whispered, “He’s watching. He can see us reflected in the mirror behind the bar.” Toby growled, “Did he follow you here?” “He might have. Mark was at my evening class.” Shivering at the idea of being stalked through the streets, she grabbed Toby’s hand and asked, “Why would he follow me? Is he suspicious?”  “What’s wrong with us meeting in a pub?” Toby assumed his surly frown. He patted the space next to him on the bench. “Come here, babe.” She slipped onto the seat beside him and his arm slid around her shoulders. She gazed at him, her lips parted in a question. Leaning over, he kissed her firmly, sending warm flushes down her body. His lips traveled across her cheek, and his breath tickled her ear as he whispered, “Let him think this is why we met. Say something casual to fool him.” He released her and gazed into her eyes. Playing along, she gushed, “Oh, Toby, I didn’t know you felt like that about me.” She brushed her fingers over the cat tattoo on his firm biceps and noted the silky feel of the invisible nanofabric. In the depths of his eyes, she glimpsed a stir of hopeful longing. Was he yearning for her or something very different? He stiffened and blinked. Then, his face broke into his rare charming smile and he pulled her close again. “Can’t resist a pretty girl.” Despite his tempting drawl, she hissed, “Joke’s over! What’s going on?”

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets. Remember Toby – the tough gangster with the tattoo of a black cat leaping up his biceps? Estelle met him over the summer and heard his voice when she was pinned in a weird cylinder in the Veterinary Clinic. Estelle learns new aspects of Toby each time they meet. Today, I’m continuing the scene where Estelle and her friend Diane bump into Toby at university. Read last week’s snippet here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/05/brainy-toby-snippet-from-super.html Some of you took a dislike to Diane, yet she often has good advice, as in this snippet after Toby swaggers away to his class. (Punctuated to fit.)
“I can tell he likes you,” Diane said, “men usually stare at me.” “And ignore me; yes, I’ve seen them glued to your face,” Estelle teased, knowing she could never compete with Diane’s looks. It had been the same when they were at high school. All the guys gathered around Diane, and worse, sometimes they chatted to Estelle only because they wanted to be introduced to her beautiful friend. She hoped Toby was different, although she was suspicious about his presence at the sinister Clinic. “Ask him to have lunch with you,” Diane urged, “or drive you home.” “I couldn’t ask him to my house. Mom would have fits if she saw his tattoos,” Estelle said, nudging her friend. Diane snickered, “Yeah. I can just imagine her frown of disapproval.” Soon they were both holding on to each other and giggling, just as if no serial killer was prowling the city streets.

Got to run; next class starts in a minute. See you around.” He strode away without a backward glance, walking across the lawn with a slight swagger in his stride, as if he knew they were watching. “Great tattoos,” Diane squealed. “He can bump into me any time.”

Two blue moons appear in the Grand Master’s TrilogyAthanor Griffin, the Grand Master of the title, resides on an isolated planet. In this excerpt from Grand Master’s Game, Athanor shows his pawn and lover, Violet, the view from the Griffin’s Eyrie.  Athanor murmured, “Let us watch the stars and forget our troubles for tonight.” He lay on his back and rested his head on her lap. Violet gazed at his grim face and curled her fingers in a strand of his dark hair. His eyes glowed with the calm blue that was their quiescent state. She bent to kiss his cheek. Violet gazed up as he wished. At first, only two or three of the brightest stars were visible in the twilight. Fainter stars appeared gradually as the last dim light of the setting sun vanished and the horizon darkened from blue to the black of night. Suddenly, she understood. Above them, the specks of stars resolved into a great spiral arm of the galaxy. Athanor’s planet was positioned above the plane of the galactic disk. A second spiral arm was visible beyond the first, and another, still further and fainter, coiled on the far side of the disk. “I can see the whole galaxy,” she breathed in awe. “Yes, the entire galaxy is the playground of the Grand Masters. Some are greedy to annex ever larger sectors. My strategy will oppose their ambitions.” His words were a sober contrast to his normal arrogance and wry humor.  Shuddering at the enormity of the Grand Masters’ ambitions, she complained, “Now, I’m frightened! You’ve shown me the vastness of space and told me it’s a battleground for your games.” He kissed her cheek, “Hush, my dear pawn, it is nothing new. Men have always yearned to conquer the galaxy. Relax in my arms and enjoy the night sky.” She took comfort in his words and gazed up again. A meteor blazed across the sky and she breathed in wonder at the bright beauty of the myriad stars. A pale light appeared against the opposite mountain peak and a blue moon rose. As she watched, a second full moon emerged and two blue moons shone in the sky. “Oh!” she gasped. “The moons are like your eyes! Did you make them, Athanor?” His laughter rumbled into her mind. “No, my powers are not so immense. I merely changed the color by introducing blue sand. It took me several years to complete the task.” Privately, she wondered if he could have used his time for a better purpose. “You may be correct,” his thought came. “I was young and proud of my new domain.” She had forgotten how closely their minds were intertwined.

Diane had her eyes glommed onto Toby and Estelle guessed he would spot her striking red hair. Oh well, Estelle was used to being overshadowed by her glamorous friend. When he was ten feet away, Toby slowed; his dark gaze fixed on Estelle and his sullen mouth quirked into a lop-sided grin. He drawled, “Estelle; good to see you, babe. Thought I’d bump into you on campus sometime.” Estelle said, “Hi Toby! Didn’t expect to see you here.” She flushed bright pink, recalling when she had last heard his distinctive voice at the weird Veterinary Clinic. Had he seen her lying naked in that transparent cylinder? His smile broadened as if he guessed her thoughts.

Happy Mother’s Day! If you enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy, look at the Super Sale at the end of this post. My story has no scenes to celebrate motherhood, so I’ll give you another glimpse of Toby. You remember Toby – the tough with the tattoo of a black cat leaping up his biceps. Estelle met him over the summer and heard his voice when she was pinned in a weird cylinder. (Some creative punctuation to fit.)
Scanning the other students, Diane nudged Estelle and nodded towards the Engineering building on the other side of the lawn, “Look at that hunk!” Following Diane’s gaze, Estelle inhaled sharply; Toby! Running down the steps from the entrance, his black garb and powerful build stuck out among the nerdy crowd of engineering students. He strode across the lawn in their direction. Blushing, Estelle said, “I’ve met him; he rode a motorbike on the trails near my uncle’s farm.” Diane said, “With muscles like that, he must lift weights or wrestle. Come on, let’s say hello.” Tugging on Estelle’s hand, Diane stepped off the path and angled towards Toby. After a second of hesitation, curiosity bit Estelle. What was Toby doing at Goldman University?
