Country Scenes in South East UK #Travel #GreatBritain

The British Isles have many lovely regions, but I grew up in the Southeast and visit every year. Last summer, I stayed near Bristol and hiked in the countryside nearby. Here are some typical scenes.  

There are public footpaths where you can hike across farm fields and wilder regions with gently rolling hills. 

You can find great views over the surrounding countryside from the hilltops. 
Here is a view down to a farmhouse and fields with "retired" horses. 

Ponies grazing in a field near a river. This picture was taken in the evening as the sun was setting - notice the deep shadows.   

One of the highlights of the British countryside must be the local pubs. We had lunch in this one, the White Hart Inn. Notice the stone walls and slate tiles on the roof. 

Another common attraction for foreign visitors may be the old churches and graveyards. 

What are your favorite places? 
I write adventures and romances in science fiction and fantasy worlds. My newest story, Grand Master's Cat , is set on various planets throughout the galaxy. A feisty kitten helps fight alien invaders.

Background: The wanted murderer, Craoker, followed Toby and Estelle out of the pub. Croaker attacks Estelle, and Toby knocks him out. [Slightly creative punctuation to fit]
“Croaker, the man wanted for murder,” Estelle explained; “we recognized him when we were in the pub.” “He was bothering Estelle,” Toby growled, pulling her protectively to his side. “Are you all right?” Diane asked, running to Estelle and catching her hand. “I’m fine; Toby is looking after me.” Kneeling by the unconscious Croaker, Mark examined his face, “You’re correct, Ryan, it’s Croaker in a simple disguise.” He looked up at Toby, “I’ll take him to the police station. Give me a hand to shove him in my car.” Grabbing hold of his arms, Toby lifted Croaker’s upper torso and Mark seized his legs to carry the unconscious man to the car. Toby stepped aside and rubbed his hands together, “Better tie his hands.”

Background: Toby and Estelle are having dinner in their first real date for several weeks, when Estelle recognizes a man who walks into the pub. Toby says Croaker is dangerous so they leave by the rear exit. A little background for this scene: At the beginning of the book, Toby’s fear that Estelle will be identified by their enemies leads to complications. But now, he has been recognized by Croaker. Chaos abounds in Late Victorian England. Xavier goes off on a mission without Vic because her protector, Tubs, is not well enough to keep Vic from harm right now. In fact, Tubs is dying and the doctor doesn’t expect him to live for more than a week. Upon discovering Tubs’ dire situation, Vic sets about rescuing him instead.Good thing too. To all appearances the two strongest crime lords of London have declared war on each other. Only the two attempts on Vic’s life tells her this is all a clever plot by a third party—worse yet, a female villainess.To stop the crime lords from destroying one another, leaving their territories open to the Russian spy, she must bring Seth and Samson together, share what is really going on, and get them to agree to work against this third party. Not an easy task since Seth Sojourn thinks Vic is nothing but a foolish sop. Unfortunately, Xavier has gone missing, so it’s up to her to convince the angry crime lord that her plan is best. Otherwise, this villainess will kill everyone who gets in her way and bring England to its knees.

David arrived at five with notebook and a cloth measuring tape. He asked Tubs to raise his arms as he sat on the bed, then measured the distance from the palm of his hand to the thick ceiling beam overhead. He then looked at Vic. “I’d like to drill and place a hook into the beam. That way we can use various equipment on the same hook.”“Do it,” Vic said as she smiled at Tubs.David asked Tubs if he could stand.“Not right now. My legs are pretty tired.”Vic bragged, “He lifted little boys with his legs for nearly an hour.”David chuckled. “I doubt I could do that for even a half hour. Good thing Vic found us such a tiny little angel girl to adopt.”“How is little Maddy?”David’s smile widened into pure joy. “She is perfection incarnate. Always smiling and happy, so patient with her mother’s constant fussing.”Vic rolled her eyes. Her sister was always trying to put the world to perfection. No reason why a one-year-old child should be left to her own natural inclinations.“Once Tubs is walking, we’ll come visit.”David took further measurements of Tubs and then explained what he had in mind. “Once your legs are strong enough to carry you, I’ll have made you a device that will help you walk to the water closet on your own.”“That sounds good,” Tubs said glancing at the door of the room where his wife continued to sleep.“He’ll be strong enough tomorrow,” Vic said.“Then I’ll weld it tonight.” David smiled. “I have recently acquired one of Coffin’s arc-welders from America. It’s a fabulous device which creates an electric arc that heats to three-thousand degrees. It not only melts the metal and bonds pieces together, but will deposit the filler metal exactly where you want.”  Vic patted David on his back. Her friend dearly loved American inventions.“Just build it sturdy,” Vic said, hoping David remembered Tubs weighed four hundred pounds…or he did before he was shot three times in the chest. David nodded and put up his notebook. “We’ll get you back to full strength, have no fear about that Mr. Tubs.”Vic walked David to the front door, thanking him for making Tubs a priority.“You don’t have to thank me. You have given me my wife, my daughter, and my home. Anything you ask me to do will always be a priority.”David gripped her hand. “We’ll get Mr. Tubs back to health. I know how important he is to you and England.”To be honest she liked David a great deal more than she liked her sister.

Aurora's Mid Year Reflections

July is over and the school year will start soon. What have I accomplished in the first 7 months of 2016?
Writing Progress:I started a new series about superheroes on contemporary Earth, the Secret Supers . The superhero adventure is combined with a murder mystery and sweet romance. In my unique twist, the superheroes are bonded with animal companions. Of course, I have added aliens and genetic engineering as well as romance to the mix. The first two stories are set in and around Atalanta, my fictional version of Atlanta, and also a lighter, southern Gotham City.
This year, I published the first two books in the Secret Supers Series: Super Starrella and Starrella Falls . I have written 22,000 messy words in Book 3 with the working title of Starrella Abroad and set in the University town of Oxenford, UK. The books are currently priced at 99c or FREE on Kindle Unlimited.


In an attempt to appease fans of the Grand Master’s Trilogy , I have written a short prequel, Grand Master’s Cat . This story is on pre-order for release on August 30th. 
Also, I have joined other authors of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade in 2 ventures. An 8-author Anthology:  Romancing the Stars : 8 Short Stories of Galactic Romance & Adventure.

While they waited to pay, he asked, “Where’s the mare?” “Not far; we’re in contact.” They eased out of the booth. Why I Wrote the Secret Supers Series #amwriting #SciFi Superheroes & Romance

This year I published the start of a new Science Fiction / Paranormal series, Secret Supers, starring college kids, Earth aliens with superpowers and quirky animals.
Several lines of thought led to this series. I have always had a sneaking fondness for comic book superhero/ine stories and one or two reviewers have accused me of a comic book style. People say you should write what you know. So the main characters are students at Goldman University in Atalanta, a sunnier southern Gotham City. Many of the scenes occur in or near Atlanta where I live. Then, I had a dream about people flying through space on different animals. If you have read the intriguing book, Star Rider by Doris Piserchia, the influence of her animal steeds will be obvious. Hence, ordinary seventeen-year old Estelle Wright transforms into Super Starrella and rides her snarky winged mare, Rockette.
The first books are set firmly in contemporary Earth with the authorities stymied by weird killers and hi-tech hackers. In future books, I hope to take the characters on a series of adventures, throwing different villains at Atalanta or other locations.

Book 1, Super Starrella, follows the adventures of seventeen-year-old Estelle Wright when she is transformed into a superhero in her freshman year at college. The story opens with a crime scene and a serial killer. Estelle must solve the mystery of the killer(s) and discover her fellow supers, while pursuing her biology major and a couple of romantic entanglements.
I created a wobbly triangle of Estelle and two attractive men with their own secret agendas. It’s not difficult to guess which one she prefers, but they have a tortuous road to romance continuing over several books. Imagine a hunky biker with the tattoo of a cat leaping up his biceps and several layers of secrets. On the way, they contend with elusive villains and mysterious aliens.  

Book 2, Starrella Falls, opens at the start of the Spring Semester. Super Starrella tackles a bigger challenge and Toby is tangled in alien politics. You will learn more about Toby's background, meet aliens and hear from the cat!
College freshman Estelle Wright has it all: a superpower, a flying horse, and a hunky boyfriend. All is threatened when her old enemy swears revenge, ruthless killers target Atalanta, and Toby is under pressure to dump her. But, Estelle’s knack of finding trouble scuttles his plans. Their lives are at stake and they face agonizing decisions. The wrong choice will lead to disaster.

Bio: Aurora Springer is a crazy scientist by day and invents adventures in weird worlds at night. She has a PhD in molecular biophysics and discovers science facts in her day job.
