Estelle wakes - Snippet for #WeWriWa from Super Starrella #Superhero Romance

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets. Today, I’ll continue the scene from my new release, Super Starrella. Seventeen year old Estelle’s quiet summer at her uncle’s farm becomes weird shortly after her second meeting with the hunky biker, Toby. In last week’s snippet, Estelle’s runaway horse hit an explosion and she was knocked out. You can read it here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/03/scary-ride-snippet-from-super-starrella.htmlI’ll skip a chapter so you can learn what happens when she wakes. (Snippet edited to fit)
Estelle woke. Surreal streamers of color swirled behind her eyelids; her head felt dizzy and her stiff body ached. Questions crawled into her mind. What had happened? Where was she? Who was she? She cracked her eyes open; a white blur filled her field of vision. She tried to rub her eyes, but her hand was fastened at the wrist. Wriggling each part of her body, she discovered cold metal bands pinning her forehead, her arms and legs. Fear shivered through her tethered body and her mind whirled in confusion.
Starrella
BlurbTeen superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse tackle villains in the skies of Atalanta. The quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own. Back home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but falling in love is not in their plans. Young adult superheroes, quirky animal sidekicks, and a dash of romance enliven this thrilling adventure. Book 1 of the Secret Supers.

Fireball Snippet from Super Starrella for SFFSat Comic #Superhero #Romance

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ My new story is a young adult superhero, mystery & romance set in the fictional city of Atalanta, a sunnier, southern version of Gotham City, where a serial killer is lurking on the streets at night. Last week, Estelle’s friend Veena spotted a strange shape on a roof. You can read last week’s snippet here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/03/first-attack-snippet-from-super.html
With a swish of air, a six-legged monster streaked to the ground five steps away. Revealed in the moonlight, a giant praying mantis raised its arms to menace its human prey. The size of a tyrannosaur, its heart-shaped head hovered ten feet above them. Veena shrieked and fled from the monstrous creature. It leaped onto her. Her screams died away and her limp body dangled from the claws on the long forelegs of the huge mantis. Yelling at the top of his voice, Alan hared down the street in the opposite direction, fleeing the danger. Fine protector, Estelle thought grimly. She sent a silent plea, “Rockette!” “Coming,” the mare replied from a distance. Squelching her natural impulse to escape, Estelle searched for a handy weapon. Unwilling to abandon her friend, Estelle clenched her fists and took a step towards the brute. Its head swiveled to stare at her, great eyes glinting in the moonlight. Rage swept through Estelle and her fists glowed red. Opening her fingers, she cupped fire in her palm and instinctively lobbed a ball of flames at the monster.

Scary Ride Snippet from Super Starrella for #WeWriWa #Superhero Romance

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets. Today, I’ll continue the scene from my new release, Super Starrella. Seventeen year old Estelle’s quiet summer at her uncle’s farm becomes weird shortly after her second meeting with the hunky biker, Toby. In last week’s snippet, a black cat scared Estelle’s horse onto a firing range. You can read it here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/02/teen-rides-into-trouble-supergirl.html
Estelle screamed. She yanked at the rope looped round the mare’s neck, trying to halt their breakneck gallop. Unsuccessful, she could only cling tightly to her terrified horse. The mare raced into a blaze of green fire. Light exploded around Estelle, white light threaded with swirls of eerie green. Thunder boomed in her ears. Horse and rider flew backwards. Slamming onto the ground, pain flooded her mind and Estelle lost consciousness.

First Attack Snippet from Super Starrella for #SFFSat #Superhero Romance

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ My new story is a young adult superhero, mystery & romance set in the fictional city of Atalanta, a sunnier, southern version of Gotham City. I'm skipping again to the end of Estelle's first day at college. You can read last week’s snippet here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
Alan and Veena escorted Estelle across the campus towards the bus stop. Leaving the well-lit avenues of the campus, they entered the dimmer city streets with few other pedestrians. The rumble of the traffic on the highway covered the sound of their footsteps on the quiet sidewalks. A chill wind gusted along the street between the tall buildings and Estelle shivered. She had forgotten to bring a jacket. The streetlights were out in one block and the towering skyscrapers cast long shadows over the road. Moving closer to Alan, Veena mumbled, “It’s so dark we’d never see a mugger hiding in a doorway.” “Hey, I’ll protect you girls,” Alan protested, waving his hand. “I’m not afraid of the dark.” “We’ll be fine,” Estelle murmured, only half believing her reassurance.“Look!” Veena grabbed Estelle’s arm and pointed up. A strange shape loomed on the rooftop, silhouetted against the full moon. Round eyes gleamed in a large heart-shaped head on a thin stalk of a neck. The head bobbed down and disappeared.

Super Starrella for SFRB Showcase #Superhero #Romance

Welcome to the March Showcase of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html Remember to go back and read the posts from the other authors.
This month, I’m showcasing my latest venture. A couple of reviewers complained my writing had a comic book style. So, I wrote Super Starrella, a superhero adventure/murder mystery/romance set in Atalanta, a sunnier, southern version of Gotham City. And, with animal characters – Narnia crossed with Superman? I can’t keep my genres straight! The story has a triangle off sorts, but Estelle is correct to be suspicious about the two men. In this excerpt, Toby has apparently saved Mark and Estelle from their kidnappers.
Starrella
Excerpt:Estelle dived through the blazing garage doors, groaning at the twinge of pain from her bruised hip. She rolled onto her feet and looked round. Seeing nobody, she raced across the lawn to the driveway and jumped behind a dense clump of privet bushes. Yells from the house cut above the crackle from the burning garage. She crouched lower and peered through the leaves. A minute later, Toby stepped out of the side door with Mark’s arm draped over his shoulders. They stumbled unsteadily to the tarmac with Toby supporting Mark’s sagging body. “Round the corner,” Toby snapped as they staggered by her hiding place in the bushes. Running ahead beyond the curve in the driveway, Estelle found Mark’s sedan parked on the grass at the verge. Toby was close behind. “Open the doors,” he called. He propped Mark in the passenger seat and motioned Estelle into the back of the car. A large bruise blackened Mark’s left eye. He groaned and buried his head in his hands. Fingering her sore cheekbone, Estelle hoped she looked better than Mark. Taking the driver’s seat, Toby steered the car in a tight circle over the lawn and rolled towards the road. He didn’t drive far. Swerving into the next side road, he parked behind a dilapidated warehouse. The cracked windows and piles of cardboard boxes suggested the building was abandoned. “Why are you stopping here?” Mark asked in a weak voice.  After a long stare at Mark, Toby drawled, “You’re in no shape to drive.” He held up a cell phone. “Call your army buddies and tell them to clean out that rat’s nest we left.” Brows lowered in a fierce frown, Toby growled, “You can wait here. I don’t want Estelle detained for questions when her granny’s dying. I’m taking her straight to the hospital.”  Mark gazed at Toby’s stony face and opened his mouth as if to protest. Then, he rubbed his forehead and groaned, “You’re right, Ryan. They beat me up.” Turning to Estelle, he asked, “You okay?” Her face serious, she nodded. “I’m fine.” Fingering his bruised cheek, Mark turned to Toby. “I’m grateful you rescued us. But, how on earth did you find us so fast?” Toby’s lips twitched into a grim smile. “Know a doctor in Prescott City. Thought he might look at Estelle’s Granny. Spotted her bag by the road.” He pointed behind a green dumpster. Estelle’s distinctive red tote hung from the handlebars of the black motorbike. Remembered the Farleon tracker in the wrist band tucked inside her tote, Estelle knew how Toby had located her, but she approved of his clever explanation. “Come on, Estelle,” Toby urged, stepping out of the sedan and striding to the motorbike. He never called her ‘Star’ in front of other people. “Look after her, Ryan,” Mark called.  Handing her the tote, Toby straddled the bike and jerked his chin at Estelle. “Get on and hold tight. I’m leaving fast before the army arrives.”
BlurbTeen superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse fight vicious villains in the skies above Atalanta.
