New Release! Claimed by the Cyborg by Cara Bristol #SciFiRom Plus #Giveaway

What do you do when there is no escape route?By Cara Bristol
Get in, but make sure you can get out. We like to leave ourselves an escape route, don’t we?
Our homes have more than one exit in case of fire. Public buildings and airplanes have emergency exits.
If we’re going to a meeting or event that we fear might be long and/or boring, we sit near the door. We often choose a parking space by how easy it is to get out of.  We’ll leave events early to beat the rush.
On a blind date, we might prearrange for a friend call mid-way through just in case we need an exit line. We use the good-spouse, bad-spouse excuse to avoid engagements we don’t want to attend. Gee, I’d love to attend your day-long multi-level marketing pyramid enterprise seminar, but my husband already made plans.
We leave ourselves an escape route with marriage too. “‘Til death do we part” isn’t final at all. Around 40% of US marriages end in divorce.  For couples of certain religious beliefs who won’t divorce, in many cases, annulment is an option.
But on Xenia, the alien planet setting for Claimed by the Cyborg, there is no escape route. Divorce and annulment don’t exist. Once you are “bonded,” you are bonded for life. No outs. Because of the finality, mate choices are not left to amateurs. Bondings are arranged by a seer who choses mates who will be the most compatible.
Most Xenians accept that their bondings are arranged and look forward to that stage in their life.

An excerpt from Claimed by the Cyborg
(It’s the eve of Julietta’s bonding to a man she’s never met. Her completed bonding tunic has arrived and her sister Marji urges her to try it on)
Marji’s eyes were wide. “You don’t want to see what it looks like? Come, on! I’ll help you.” She scooted off the bed. “Try it on, please?”
“All right,” she capitulated. The tailors had done an excellent job, but it wouldn’t hurt to verify the garment fit—and it would make Marji happy. At only sixteen solar cycles, her younger sister’s bonding wouldn’t occur for several years. Like most girls her age, she talked about her future ceremony constantly, planning what she would wear, who would attend—and wondering who her mate would be.
Julietta stripped down to her panties and a lacy bra. She’d adopted Terran undergarments when she’d attended school off planet. For the bonding ceremony—and thereafter for the rest of her life—she would wear the traditional one-piece Xenian undergarment. Her choice of underwear—one more thing bonding would force her to give up.
She pulled on the pantaloons sewn in the royal huber fabric. Shimmering threads of pale rose were woven throughout so that the garment sparkled. Marji undid the fastening of the shift and held it out. Julietta slipped her arms through it, and her sister did up the back. The weight of her world rested on her shoulders.
Her sister reached for the headdress.
“That, too?” she protested, but bent at the knees so the crown could be settled on her head. Her legs threatened to buckle, but she shored up her strength and remained upright.“You look beautiful. Just like an empress!” Marji gushed.
“How appropriate, considering,” she replied dryly.
The ceremony brought her closer to becoming the sovereign. The bonding—and production of an heir—were the only two hurdles left. Then, when her father passed the scepter upon his fifty-first solar cycle, she would rule with her consort at her side.
The last time she’d tried on the dress, the crystals hadn’t yet been sewn on. She took a few exploratory steps.
“How does it feel?”
Crushing. “Fine.”
“It’s perfect!” Marji said.
Could she walk down the aisle without toppling over, without bursting into tears, without making a spectacle of herself in front of thousands?
She would have to—what choice did she have? As firstborn, she was heir apparent. Her future had been decided on the day of her birth, twenty-five solar cycles ago. “Let’s take it off now.” She lifted the crown from her head and tilted her neck from side to side in relief. Marji undid the back of the shift and removed the garment. While she hung up the tunic, Julietta donned her clothing.
“I can’t sleep, I’m so excited for you,” Marji said. “Tomorrow night, you get to see your consort! I don’t know why you never chose to see him before this. As future empress, you receive special dispensation and could have seen him if you’d wanted to. I would have jumped at the chance!” She sighed. “But, like everyone else, I won’t see my future mate until the Sha’A’la and won’t meet him until the bonding ceremony.”
“Whether I see him or not, the future will proceed as scheduled,” Julietta said.
“Father says he’s very kind. Mother says he’s supernova!” she said. “That’s means handsome.”

“I know what it means. Mother has been watching too many Terran vids.” Marji giggled, and, despite herself, Julietta smiled.
Though she hadn’t seen Earth herself, their mother loved Terran culture and had encouraged her eldest daughter to study there and explore the wonders of the Blue Planet before fulfilling her duty. Julietta had had two glorious years of freedom, two glorious years of being “Jules,” two glorious years of being just another Terran Technical Institute student, two glorious years with a man who most definitely qualified as supernova, two glorious years to pretend the future would never come.

Claimed by the Cyborg Description

March Fellows assumed he had all the time in the galaxy to pursue a relationship with Jules, an alien exchange student from Xenia, until she vanished without a trace. After years of searching, he finds his lost love on the eve of her arranged marriage.
The daughter of the Xenian emperor, Julietta never meant to fall in love with a Terran man while visiting Earth. Leaving to fulfill her responsibilities on her home planet opened up a hole in her heart that could never be filled. When March, now a cyborg, unexpectedly shows up just before she is to be bonded, she struggles to find the courage to turn him away a second time and follow through with her duty. Before she can act, the lovers are thrust into a political conspiracy that threatens the Xenian empire and their lives.

Masked man - Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #YA #superhero

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Since my WIP(s) is at a rough stage, I am still posting snippets from Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers.
BlurbDanger is the last thing on Estelle’s mind when she visits the University of Oxenford for a summer course. But, mysterious thefts and shadowy figures spur her into action. With Toby five thousand miles away, Estelle and her winged horse must hunt for the culprits alone. Soon they are embroiled in a mixed bag of aliens and ancient magic. Toby’s unexpected arrival throws her into turmoil and spurs events into a climax.
Toby is in London where he met Lord Winterbourne, head of the British Farleons. When Toby left the building, he discovered a short man was tailing him. His casual attempts to shake the tail are in last week’s snippet – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/01/stubborn-tail-snippet-from-gargoyle.html The final sentence was: Time to switch to a different tactic.
Toby stopped in a pub for a curry and a pint of bitter. The short man entered warily and sat three tables away, studiously nursing a glass of ale while hiding his face behind a newspaper. Toby swallowed the last mouthful of curry on his plate and drained his glass. Time to shake off his inept pursuer. Leaving the payment on the table, he scooted round the corner into the men’s room. Once out of sight, he tucked his posh jacket under an arm and switched the color of his nanofabric shirt from white to blue as a simple disguise. He exited the pub by the back door, stepped into an alley smelling of rotten garbage and trotted to the far end. Halfway to the intersection with a broader street, a bird screeched. Jerking toward the sound, Toby glimpsed a masked man aiming a pistol. Pain burst down the back of his neck.

New Release! Scavenger Falters by Liza O'Connor #SciFi #Romance

The Real Reason Alisha Ran Away Like all debutantes, Alisha lived to the whims of her parents. Her mother decided who her friends would be, what she would wear, and what she could say.Her father decided who she would marry, and his choice was the President of Americas. Alisha had hated the slime-ball as her president, so imagine her horror when her father decided he would be her husband. Fortunately, nothing could be done as of yet, for Slime-ball still had a wife he needed to set aside, and it had to be done carefully or the wealthy father of his current wife would take revenge. She had hoped with time, she could convince her father what a disastrous marriage this would be. But her father didn’t care about her happiness. He just wanted the lucrative contacts he could make with a family connection to the President.Lucky for Alisha she had programmed their security system to record the day’s events which she would review each night before going to bed. Thus, she had a day’s warning when she learned her parents planned to drug her and she would wake up married to the Slime-Ball. And that is why Alisha, the worst debutante ever, climbed out a window and returned to Captial as a street girl in search of her gramps.
Scavenger FaltersByLiza O’Connor
Alisha Kane, the Corps’ best flyer, is promoted to colonel, in charge of teaching the Corp’s SkyRyders her extraordinary flying maneuvers. The man she loves, Logan, continues to place the Corps first and insists they both remain focused on their work. For Alisha, this means ferreting out the best flyers in a Corps that has systematically forced great flyers into mediocrity. Logan focuses on learning Alisha’s flying techniques so that he can become the hero the East Coast desperately needs. The result includes fractured ribs and broken hearts, but through it all they never relinquish their love of the Corps.

EXCERPT
“Young girls are the strangest, yet most beautiful things on God’s Earth,” Daniel declared.Logan didn’t even dare want to attempt a reply in his present mood, but fortunately Daniel didn’t seem to be looking for one.“Alisha’s mother, Caroline, was much like Alisha when she was sixteen.”Logan’s heart climbed into his throat. “Alisha says she’s twenty-one.” Dear God, don’t let her have lied.“Is she?” Daniel laughed and shook his head. “I suppose she is. Doesn’t seem possible. She looks so young to me. But then I’m growing old, and the young keep looking even younger every day.”“Then she is twenty-one?” Daniel paused as he did the math in his head. “She turned twenty-one the day after she left Flatland, I believe.” Then his gaze fell upon Logan. “But she’s a young twenty-one. Until she left Flatland, she had been pampered and protected from the world at large. It’s the way they raise socialite children. Teach them no values, no ethics, no skills, unless you call setting a table a skill.”“Doesn’t sound like a life Alisha would like.”“No, but had you asked me, I would have told you her mother would have likewise shunned it. Caroline was just like Alisha, one minute a playful kitten, and then next, doing something so extraordinary it would take your breath away. One day she and some of her friends had gone into Capital to see a movie. That was back when the subways still ran. While they were waiting for the train, a little boy fell onto the tracks. His nanny screamed for help, but there was a train barreling towards them. No one could save him, or so it seemed.”Daniel smiled with pride, intermingled with regret. “Caroline dived onto the tracks, grabbed the boy, and rolled out of the way of the oncoming train within seconds of impact. After the train was gone, she handed the boy back to the nanny and then tried to pull herself back up onto the dock. Unfortunately, she had sprained her right wrist and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t climb up.”“Wouldn’t anyone help her?” Logan asked.“You would think so, but no. They were afraid to get close to the edge. Afraid she’d accidentally pull them over. She remained on those tracks for almost an hour, dodging one train after another, now too proud and angry to ask for further help.“Finally, the father of the child arrived, and the little boy told him what happened and begged him to help the nice lady who had saved him.” Daniel sighed. “So he called her over, pulled her onto the dock, and took her to his home where she was well cared for by his personal medic.

Stubborn Tail! Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

Happy New Year!  Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Since my WIP is still at a rough stage, I am still posting snippets from Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers.

With Toby five thousand miles away, Estelle and her winged horse must hunt for the culprits alone. Soon they are embroiled in a mixed bag of aliens and ancient magic. Toby’s unexpected arrival throws her into turmoil and spurs events into a climax.
Last week (See http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/12/chill-snippet-from-gargoyle-hunt-for.html ), we learned Toby had a difficult day in London where he met Lord Winterbourne, head of the British Farleons. When Toby left the building, he discovered a short man was tailing him. So, this piece is in Toby’s POV.
Giving a mental shrug, he resolved to take the spy on a tedious walk through the busy city before shaking him off. Toby led his tail on a lengthy tour from Wessex House to the Thames and along the waterfront all the way to the Tower of London. After joining the tourists gawping at the dungeons and the crown jewels, he left the Tower in the middle of the afternoon. Marching from the river to the main streets, he dived into the dark entrance to the underground and jumped on the first train of the Circle Line. He got off at the next station, crossed the bridge to the platform on the opposite side and backtracked. Unluckily, his tail caught sight of him exiting the carriage. Stubborn guy! Time to switch to a different tactic.

After Toby arrives, his first order of business is meeting the clade leader in London. When he returns in the evening, Estelle is eager to hear about his trip. But, they’re meeting is interrupted when the alluring Dr. Cynthia Mortimer marches up to Toby: Read last week’s snippet here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/12/hot-with-flames-snippet-from-gargoyle.html I’ll overlap by a couple of sentences for the benefit of those who skipped last week for the holiday celebrations. Cynthia has walked away on the arms of her escorts and Toby turns to Estelle.
He turned to face her, “I have to talk to her.” “What?” she screeched, clenching fists hot with flames. “Chill! Winterbourne said she could help find the crooks. Not sure if I trust him.” Toby rubbed her arm, “Find somewhere private and I’ll tell you about my day.” He groaned, “Ain’t been easy so far.” “Sure.” Estelle led him across the lawn and through the passage into the Garden Quad, “We can sit by the pond under the rowan trees.” Until Cynthia Mortimer captured his attention, she had intended to invite Toby up to her room.

A Cheapskate’s Tips to Marketing #Indie #Books

I am reporting on my marketing efforts in 2016 and will focus on the most successful for me and my books. I write science fiction fantasy adventures and romances. You can see a list of my published stories HERE. My books are not best sellers, however, I have returned a small profit each year.
My marketing goals are: 1) reach the largest number of potential readers, and 2) sell more books! As an Indie author, I prefer free or inexpensive options to maximize Return on Investment.
Take-home message: Cross-promotion is the clear winner!  Indie authors are inventive and many are generous in helping other authors. Cross-promotion with other authors outperforms most free or paid commercial sites. Read to the end of the post for details.
Various Outreach, Cross-Promotion Efforts and Their Outcomes in 2016
Social MediaTwitter: @AuroraSpringerMy followers have grown slowly from 3000 to about 8000. I am selective about the people I follow. My tweets and RTs are partly automated thanks to valuable advice from Effrosyni Moschoudi at http://effrosyniwrites.com/2015/10/22/twitter-lists-and-roundteam-explained/Occasionally, someone will tell me they liked my book or even left a review.
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Aurora-Springer/885945434752937 Again, my followers and likes have grown slowly to 1200. I use facebook to chat with virtual friends, mostly within groups. Sometimes, readers exchange messages with me.
Pininterest: I set up an account and posted most of my books. It does not seem to be furthering my marketing goals.
Website/BlogI purchased a domain: http://AuroraSpringer.com. I blog about my stories, writing and entertain guest authors at http://AuroraSpringer.blogger.com One new venture is Niume where I post about my stories, travel and wildlife. This site will pay a small amount for original posts that people visit. https://niume.com/pages/profile/?userID=42051

Multi-author publications
In 2016, I published an anthology of short stories with eight authors: Romancing the Stars. This anthology sold regularly with some promotions.
The Science Fiction Romance Brigade set up Portals : Volumes of beginning chapters of Science fiction romance novels. http://sfrportals.blogspot.com/ More than 60 authors have participated in producing seven volumes. My stories: Grand Master’s Pawn is in Volume Three and The Lady is Blue is in Volume six. This venture did not seem to do much for my books, possibly because the adventure drives the story more than the romance. It may be valuable in the long term.

Reaching Readers
BookBub: I participated in a giveaway with members of http://enovelauthorsatwork.com/ (cost $60) and gained >400 followers. Advantage: BookBub will email my followers about new releases of full-length, previously unpublished novels. Note: You must submit the new book within 7 days of its release.
Amazon: I ran several Amazon book giveaways and gained >1000 followers at little cost (set your book to 99c). Advantage: Amazon will email followers about your new releases. Disadvantage: You cannot check how many followers you have. You have to sum up the new followers for each giveaway.

Newsletter Subscribers
This year, I tried paid and free promotions to grow my subscribers from a few hundred to ~4000. Advantage: My subscribers like free and 99c ebooks. I hope they will enjoy my books and read my series, although it may take time. Disadvantage: I have to pay for newsletter service.
FreekindleGiveaways: I paid $50 for a multi-genre giveaway and gained ~1200 subscribers in June. Five months later, I culled the inactive emails and had ~400 active subscribers.
AuthorsXP: Cost $35, but I helped in beta runs. First: giveaway to gain subscribers netted 630 names, but only 500 new people. Second, tested asking a question of readers and gained ~360 names, many new.
Instafreebie giveaways: A successful option. Cost $20 per month to Instafreebie for required signup. Advantages: Various cross-promotion groups connect with instafreebie to offer readers free books in return for their name and email address. You can integrate with MailChimp. Disadvantage: You cannot add book in KDP Select. Also, the number of new people decreases over time and I have a limited number of books to give away.

My Top Picks for Cross-PromotionCross-promotion with other authors outperforms the majority of paid and free commercial sites for promotion. My conclusions are supported by Jackie Weger’s tests - http://enovelauthorsatwork.com/plotting-your-books-life-in-2017/All cross-promotions expect participating authors to promote in their newsletters and social media.
Top Pick for Science Fiction & Fantasy: Patty Jansen’s monthly cross-promotion at www.pattyjansen.com/promoA well-established monthly promotion with 100-150 participating authors. My free books can achieve 1000’s of downloads. Successful in generating sales and some reviews. Sales of books in my series can produce >$30 in 7-10 days.

Promotions at the following sites have sold 10-40 of my 99c ebooks each time. Caveat: some sites are relatively new and still gaining traction and readers. Others have begun to charge small fees.
Science Fiction Romance Cross-Promotion www.smschmitz.com/promo (SM Schmitz)
The Cross-Promotion Authors’ Collective rozmarshall.co.uk/romance (Rose Dewar) and https://www.facebook.com/groups/xpromocollective/

Hot with Flames - Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

I wish you all a wonderful holiday!
Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
I am posting snippets from my new release, Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers. Sorry, it’s not really cheerful holiday reading, although all will end happily.
Cynthia’s slender legs looked impossibly long between her miniskirt and the stiletto heels.  “Toby!” Estelle hissed. He turned to face her, “I have to talk to her.” “What?” she screeched, clenching fists hot with flames.
