Kitten Attacks Alien Killer in Snippet for #WeWriWa #SciFi Plus #Giveaway

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
This weekend, I’m skipping to another fun story for the snippet. My short SciFi prequel, Grand Master’s Cat is free though Sunday.
 Cat
The Griffin Grand Master is investigating two crashed spacecraft on an uncharted and dangerous planet.
A hissing growl alerted the Grand Master to a new threat. He dodged aside and twisted to face his adversary, a sand-colored scorpion twice the length of his arm. The stinger missed his head, deflected by a small orange cat with its teeth fastened onto the segmented tail. The vicious creature whipped its tail from side to side, the fluffy orange animal dangling from the end. Losing its grip, the kitten dropped into the stony ground. The venomous tip stabbed at the fallen cat. The Grand Master thrust out his fist, blasting blue fire. Tottering under the psi blast, the scorpion staggered two steps and collapsed onto the desert sand.

New Release - Scavenger Vanishes by Liza O'Connor #SciFiRom

Scavenger VanishesByLiza O’Connor
While the food at the General’s table is more expensive and cooked by the best chef at the fort, Alisha hates it all the same. There are no peaceful moments at the General’s table.  Powell is always yelling at someone or slamming his fist upon the table causing wine glasses to leap into a salute and then fall over. Alisha much prefers a Philly cheese steak served to the masses of hungry soldiers in the mess hall. It tastes delightful, and the company is far more fun. She misses the camaraderie and often wishes to be a captain again. Being a colonel hasn’t been any fun at all!

Scavenger VanishesBy Liza O’Connor
BlurbStationed on opposite coasts, Alisha and Logan must each face their own demons and challenges. On the West Coast, Alisha loses her rank for butting heads with General Powell and soon discovers the life of a private can be utter hell. On the East Coast, newly promoted General Logan discovers his soldiers do not recognize his authority to command. In an effort to retake control of the East Coast Corps, Logan authorizes unthinkable actions. When Alisha faces a life-threatening crisis, will Logan rise above his own troubles, or will she discover love and rescue with her best friend Jack?
EXCERPTAs Jack and Alisha left the mess hall and walked toward the assembly hall, he spoke softly, “Alisha, take my advice and don’t push the general any further.” “I had no choice.”“You do have a choice,” Jack asserted. “And he’s very close to cutting you down to a buck private.”Alisha shrugged. At least then she would enjoy some good company at lunch. “Is he still planning to hand out all those demerits?”“He is,” Jack replied. “And he expects you to stand up on the stage beside him, providing your silent support.”“Well, he’s delusional,” Alisha replied, and stormed into the assembly room to search out the general.Powell was already on the stage with his lists of demerits. Alisha ignored his angry demand as to where she had been for the last three hours. “Sir, if you insist on giving the soldiers demerits, which are in my opinion fully unwarranted, then I am left with no choice but to insist, as their co-field commander during the battle last night, all demerits be leveled against myself.”“Alisha, we’ve already had this discussion,” the general warned.“Yes, sir, but I must do what I can to limit the demoralizing effect your actions will have. These men clearly do not deserve demerits. According to Reg 6.98, it is my obligation as their commanding officer to take responsibility for their actions while under my command. The footnotes to this reg state that ‘taking responsibility’ can encompass the transfer of disciplinary punishments.”“Alisha, that reg is used by generals to punish bad captains…”“That may be your use for it, but I checked with MAC. Any demerits you give these men today will go to me. There’s nothing you can do to stop it,” Alisha assured him.The general glared over her shoulder at Jack. “I suppose you put her up to this?”“He did not!” Alisha snapped. “Jack and I have not discussed Reg 6.98. In fact, Jack’s advice was for me to fall in line and support you.”“Which you’re clearly not planning to do.”“No, sir,” Alisha admitted.“Well then, get off my stage,” he snapped.“Gladly, sir,” she replied, and joined the ranks of Ryders gathering for the debriefing.

We are not betrothed - Snippet from #SciFiR Romance Comet Tales for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
I am continuing a scene from an older story, my space operetta, Captured by the Hawk. This story is included in my latest release, Comet Tales.
Tag line: Spaceships crash across the galaxy in the comic misadventures of spy Grey Kat and pirate Black Hawk. After stealing secret codes from the Emperor's Revenge, Grey Kat was caught by Black Hawk’s crewmen and taken onto his spaceship. Captain Hawk has just recognized her face. She is Mistress Trina Sligo, daughter of the Solarian ambassador, Master Fingal Sligo. You can read last week’s snippet here - http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/04/trina-sligo-in-snippet-from-comet-tales.html
He stiffened suddenly and his eyes narrowed in suspicion, “Are you not betrothed to the Emperor’s younger son?”       Trina shrugged dismissively. Clearly, Black Hawk disliked the fawning prince. She shared his distaste. “We are not betrothed,” she stated with a strong emphasis on the word “not.” Perversely, she found the masked Hawk a hundred times more attractive than the young prince with his cosmetically enhanced features. She explained, “Prince Alvin courts Mistress Sligo assiduously. It gives her easy access to the Emperor’s palace and much of his imperial sector.”      “I do not trust the Emperor,” he murmured, “and it seems, neither do the Solarians.”

Trina Sligo in Snippet from Comet Tales for #WeWriWa #SciFi Space opera

Captain Hawk first sees her in her grimy dock thief disguise. He is suspicious, but sends her to a surprisingly luxurious cabin where she washes her dyed hair and dirty face, so she looks very different when Black Hawk next sees her. You can read last week’s snippet here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/03/i-know-your-face-snippet-from-comet.html The last line was: Black Hawk circled her again, insisting, “I know your face.”
He halted in front of her, staring at her face with narrowed eyes. She remained motionless and silent, only her eyes sparked with insolence.     “Wait,” he cried, with a confident glow in his green eyes, “I have it! You are Mistress Trina Sligo, daughter of the Solarian diplomat.”    She made a slight bow, and said, tilting up her chin with a mocking, regal air, “You are correct, Captain Hawk. In this guise, I am Mistress Trina Sligo.”    “Amazing!” he said appreciatively, shaking his head. “No one would ever guess that you were the dock thief, Grey Kat.”    She smiled thinly, wondering how long he would stare at her.

Crazy cat! Snippet from Grand Master's Cat for #WeWriWa Epic #SciFi Fantasy

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Everyone loves kitties, and the Grand Master is no exception. The brave kitten, Rascal, ends up living in the Griffin’s castle.  You can read last week’s snippet here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/04/brave-kitty-snippet-from-grand-masters.htmlI’m skipping to the end of the story. It sets the stage for the next book. The cat has the final line, and the prequel continues into the start of Book 1, Grand Master’s Pawn. We are in the Griffin’s POV and he is considering his short list of the candidates in the annual selection of pawns. (edited to fit)
He glared at the name on the top of his list of candidates, Violet Hunter. How had she dared to apply for the selection? Was she foolish or merely ignorant of her heritage? What Grand Master would take the risk of employing the prophet’s daughter as a pawn? What a crazy choice, embracing the omen of their destruction. His grim laughter echoed around the room. He replayed the clip of the girl’s combat exam with one of the instructors. The tiger-striped Aman-ellan sheathed his claws and fought with a sensor-tipped knife; anticipating each strike with agile leaps, the girl blocked his attacks with ease. Rascal sat on his haunches and patted his paw at the dancing images of the girl and her opponent; he uttered an emphatic, “Meow!” and settled back on the Griffin’s lap. “Crazy cat!” the Grand Master grumbled.

Secret Supers for #SRFB Showcase #YA #Superheroes

Welcome to the SFR Brigade April Showcase! The timing for the Showcase is excellent because I can highlight a brand new set of covers designed by the talented Danielle Fine for my Secret Supers series. The covers rebrand the series as YA superheroes with comic book style.
Check the end of the post for April Fool's bargain books.
Please remember to check out the posts from the other participants at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html
Super New Covers for Books 1-3 of the Secret Supers
The first novel in the Secret Supers Series, Super Starrella, describes how ordinary, seventeen-year old Estelle Wright becomes Super Starrella with her fire power and flying horse, Rockette. She meets bad boy biker, Toby Ryan, aka Super Tobarian with his black jaguar cat, Growler. They fight the comic style supervillain, Mr. Sunshine, and his giant killer insects in the southern US city of Atalanta. Anyone up for fried catfish and hush puppies?
The romance between Estelle and Toby hits a snag in Starrella Falls, Book 2, partly because Tobarian’s alien Elders want him to produce purebred Farleons.
They finally resolve their romantic problems in Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3, which is set in Oxenford University, UK. You know - the famous center of academia for a millennium.    Each book has a new set of monsters and villains. Rockette, the super horse, is a favorite with readers. If you’ve read the Tin Tin stories, Rockette channels a mix of Captain Haddock and Snowy.

I know your face - Snippet from Comet Tales for #WeWriWa #SciFi

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
I am continuing a scene from an older story, my space operetta, Captured by the Hawk. This story is included in my latest release, an anthology of shorter works, Comet Tales.
Last week, during his interrogation, he told her his ship had left dock. But, she dropped her dock rat’s dialect and he has locked her into the luxurious cabin of his ex-wife. Yes, Kat is intrigued by the elaborate gowns she finds in a chest. Kat wants to wash off her grimy disguise, so she looks very different when Black Hawk next sees her. You can read last week’s snippet here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
(Slightly edited to fit.)Later in the day, she was escorted again to the Captain’s cabin. Black Hawk was seated as usual at his table, examining the star charts. He glanced up when she was ushered into the room. His eyes lingered, registering astonishment at her gleaming red hair and fair, freckled skin.
The Hawk stood, and paced around her with the supple and deadly grace of a prowling tiger. He spoke in a deep resonant voice, “A dramatic change; Grey Kat is entirely washed away.”
A thrill of attraction ran through Trina, watching the feline grace of his steps. When he stood still, the image of raw, feral power was replaced by the enigma of the mysterious Black Hawk, concealed in black garments. She raised her chin provocatively, and spoke in the haughty accent of the Solarian upper class, “I am grateful for your kindness in providing me with clean clothes and a luxurious cabin.”
Black Hawk circled her again, insisting, “I know your face.”

Not the usual dockside thief - Snippet for #WeWriWa from Comet Tales #SciFi

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
I am continuing a scene from an older story, my space operetta, Captured by the Hawk. This story is included in my new release, Comet Tales. This novella is suitable for St. Patrick’s Day since the heroine, Katrina Sligo, is Irish, and her ship is called the Shamrock. (Slight spoiler since her ship does not appear until near the end.)
Tag line: Spaceships crash across the galaxy in the comic misadventures of spy Grey Kat and pirate Black Hawk. After stealing secret codes from the Emperor's Revenge, Grey Kat has been caught trespassing near Black Hawk’s ship. He is interrogating her about the stolen codes. I am continuing the scene from last week. You can read last week’s snippet here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/03/aint-got-nothing-snippet-from-comet.html
“Ain’t bin in no ship. Ye put me back on dock,” she pleaded, chin tipped impudently. “My ship has lifted from the spaceport. You cannot return to Hassam.” He stared at her for a minute, noting the unconscious challenge in her eyes and her defiant stance, “You intrigue me. You’re not afraid, and your replies are too prompt and recalcitrant for the usual dockside thief.”  Kat remained silent. She locked her gaze onto his green eyes, and pondered her best approach in dealing with this confident pirate. “Are you ready to talk?” he insisted in a harsh voice, evidently unused to opposition. “What’s your name, thief?”

New Releases and Specials in #SciFi & #Fantasy for March

 Ambassador
New Release: Ambassador, Book 6, The Enemy Within, by Patty Jansen
Two men went on a surfing trip in a remote area. Only one came back, accused of murdering the other.Sounds simple, right? Not quite, because the alleged murder happened on another planet, the accused is a member of the secretive Pretoria Cartel of super-rich business tycoons–with illegal off-Earth ventures–and the only person who can remotely be called a witness is an alien, the elder Abri from the Pengali Thousand Islands tribe.Diplomat Cory Wilson is asked to accompany Abri to the Nations of Earth court, but when he and his team arrive there, their contacts have been moved to different cases, their rooms are bugged and their movements restricted. No one is answering their questions, but it is when a lawyer is murdered and Cory’s team captures a mysterious stalker that things get interesting.Just as well they are prepared in the usual way: alert and highly armed.

 Liberty

Struggling with newfound sentience and desperately trying to repair itself, The Indescribable Joy of Destruction is a ship trying to find a new home. In a galaxy torn apart by generations of civil war, that isn't an easy task. Unable to make the decision alone, it revives the sole human aboard - the enemy officer who crippled it.

Commander Olivia Johnson wakes to find herself in the infirmary of a strange vessel. Her nightmares deepen when she discovers it is the ship that attacked her destroyer. Even as she recovers from her physical injuries, she can't get past her survivor's guilt. She might have failed to protect her crew, but she vows to take revenge on their killer.

When the ship uncovers a genocidal plot by the commander's own admirals, Johnson realises just what is at stake. Together, the AI ship and the human officer must recruit outsiders from both sides.
