Time to Scarper! Snippet from gargolye Hunt for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

I am posting snippets from Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers.
BlurbDanger is the last thing on Estelle’s mind when she visits the University of Oxenford for a summer course. But, mysterious thefts and shadowy figures spur her into action. With Toby five thousand miles away, Estelle and her winged horse must hunt for the culprits alone. Soon they are embroiled in a mixed bag of aliens and ancient magic. Toby’s unexpected arrival throws her into turmoil and spurs events into a climax.
Toby is in London where he has been followed. He walked into an ambush. See last week’s snippet – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/02/what-killed-him-snippet-from-gargoyle.html Last sentence (in italics to indicate telepathic communication): “Where’s the black bird?” Toby asked Growler.
“The raven flew home. She warned me about your danger.” Standing motionless and invisible, Toby frowned at the wider road intersecting the alley. Cars trundled past; girl walked by, swinging her purse, without glancing sideways; light footsteps pattered closer. Two kids raced into the alley and halted. A boy called, “Hey, what’s going on?” A girl squeaked, “They’re dead. Let’s scram.” Toby agreed, “Time to scarper, cat.”

“Zarks! What killed him?” Toby muttered, “Suicide pill?” He lowered the body next to the one Growler had trapped. “This one’s alive.” Shimmering into visibility as he moved, the jaguar sat on his haunches and pawed the leg of a prone man; his capture groaned. Toby switched his suit to invisible and looked around to assess the damage. Besides the two thugs at his feet, two lay across each other at the far of the dirty lane. The goon who had bludgeoned Toby slumped against the wall. All unconscious, apart from the one Toby had questioned; he lay dead. “Where’s the black bird?” Toby asked Growler.

"Need a paw?" Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #Fantasy

“Need a paw?” Growler snarled. The ghostly shape of the jaguar crouched on top of his victim. Blood dripping from his bare arm, the final thug crawled toward the safety of the main street. “Thanks, pal.” Pausing to tug his nanomask over his head, Toby dashed after the escaping man. Hoisting the man above his head, Toby glared into his panicked eyes and grated, “Who sent you? You’re dead meat if you don’t answer.” The man gasped, “Snake Eye. He’ll slay you!” The next second, his eyes rolled up and his breath fled.

Excerpt from Grand Master’s MateNote: This scene describes a rare occasion when they travelled in a space shuttle. Violet is the pilot and the shuttle has been damaged. The shuttle dipped below the sickly yellow clouds, shooting to the ground like a flaming arrow. Fires raged across her view. Bump. Bump. Bump. Turbulence tossed the unresponsive shuttle to and fro like a child’s toy. They plummeted towards the ground and Violet shrieked in horror. Praying the mechanism would operate, she hit the switch to extend the wings and slow their descent. A jolt tossed her out of the seat. But, the wings had opened out. The shuttle leveled and sped over the blue expanse of an ocean and she exhaled in relief. Their speed was still far too high and the sensors were useless. Violet peered into the viewing screen, grateful the window was clear. Approaching rapidly from the distance, she saw the dark mass of a continent. She tried to recall the procedures for an emergency landing. Or crash, mostly likely, she mused, squashing her dread. There was one more option to try, unless they ejected. Glancing down, Violet saw Athanor sprawled on the floor with his eyes closed. She could never lift him into an ejection seat. They shot across the continent. Violet punched the button to deploy the emergency parachute. A severe bump and their descent slowed to a gentle downwards drift. Jagged peaks lay straight ahead. Struggling with the controls, Violet nudged the shuttle toward a level area. She activated the landing thrusters. Only one set worked. Tilted at a crazy angle, the shuttle dropped fast, zipping over sand and rocks. Thump, thump, thump. They scraped across the sandy ground, and slammed to a halt. Her head banged against the control panel, and she winced at the searing pain. But, they were down, and almost intact. The whine of the thrusters faded. Silence. She stared around the tilted cabin. The ship had tipped on its side and the port wall was now the floor. The view screen showed a patch of sand dotted with stones.Scrambling out of the restraints, Violet looked for Athanor. He had slipped to the new bottom of the cabin, landing on the side door. His eyes were shut and blood trickled from a cut on his temple. Scooting to his body, she crouched to examine him. “No,” she cried in anguish, sensing nothing of his power, not even the faint pulse of unconscious mental activity. He must be dead. Nearly hysterical, she pounded on his chest without seeing a reaction. In utter despair, Violet embraced his body and sobbed, “Athanor, don’t die. Don’t leave me alone. I love you.” Tears flooded her face. For a long time, she sprawled on top of his body, heedless of her surroundings or dire predicament.
A moan broke the silence. Violet gasped in shock. Athanor’s body shifted and his eyelids fluttered open. His natural eye was a dull blue without the psi glow and the artificial eye looked like crazed glass. “Athanor, you’re alive,” she breathed. Her tears of joy dripped onto his strained face. He groaned, “I’m alive, but my psi power has died.”
So, they’re stranded on a strange planet without a working shuttle or psi powers. How are they going to get home?

Four down! Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #Superhero Adventure & Romance

I am still posting snippets from Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers.

Toby is in London where he has been followed. He walked into an ambush. See last week’s snippet – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/01/shots-cracked-snippet-from-gargoyle.html Final sentence last week: A large black bird swooped on his attacker, beating its wings at the man’s head and stabbing its cruel beak at his eyes. (Excuse the slightly creative punctuation)
The mugger staggered aside, flinging up an arm to protect his face. He fired into the sky, missing the swift raven by an arm’s length. Footsteps thudded toward Toby’s back; he spun on his toes. Four men rushed him. Outnumbered, but not outclassed, Toby darted forward. His fist pounded the chest of the foremost attacker, knocking him aside. Dodging the bludgeon swung by the second man, he grabbed a hairy arm and yanked the thug at the gun-wielding goon at his back. They crashed to the ground. Four down; two to go. A hazy streak shot past; a man screamed.

Shots cracked. Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

Since my WIPs are at a rough stage, I am still posting snippets from Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers.

Toby’s unexpected arrival throws her into turmoil and spurs events into a climax.
Toby is in London for a meeting with the head of the British Farleons. When Toby left the building, he discovered a short man was tailing him. His attempts to shake the tail are in last week’s snippet – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/01/masked-man-snippet-from-gargoyle-hunt.html The final cliffhanger sentence was: Pain burst down the back of his neck.
Dizzy and shaken, he stumbled against the nearest wall. Muggers! His tail had called in an ambush. Adrenaline pulsed, firing Toby’s instincts into fight mode. Dodging aside, he aimed a kick at the man who had walloped him. His attacker yelped and slammed to the ground; his cudgel thumped on the concrete. Shots cracked. Toby swiveled to face the first armed man and blinked in astonishment. A large black bird swooped on his attacker, beating its wings at the man’s head and stabbing its cruel beak at his eyes.
