Love Confidential: You’re never TOO sensitive. Unless you are.

But that wasn’t the problem for self-dubbed “Overly Sensitive.”

A bigger problem was assigning gender to sensitivity.
Fun fact: Pigeon gender is impossible to determine unless you inspect the parts. You can’t even tell from their mating behavior. We are all sensitive people, sang somebody. So why do we insist on assigning roles to ourselves?? #loveconfidential (that’s me) answers!

Crush resolutions this year

A few years ago I realized that the reason the whole New Year’s resolution was a disaster for me was because I was making New Year’s Rules. Blech. After a holiday season filled with do do doing for everyone else, why on earth would I want to give myself a new punishment?

F the resolution!

What gift could I give myself?

Since then, I’ve developed a New Year’s ritual. A spellcasting if you will.

The best way to do this practice is around a New Moon. The next one will be Jan 5.

That’s another thing. Dec 31 and Jan 1 are constructs. Work with natural cycles.

The first time I did this, it just so happened that New Year’s Day was a new moon. So, on Dec 31, I took the time to write out (using pen and paper) what I wanted in the coming year. I sat quietly with my list and  saw what was blocking me from it–guilt and shame. That became the first resolution I ever kept. The next day, I wrote the words guilt and shame out in a fancy script with some doodles, all the while imagining with excitement what my life would be like without those things. Then I burned the paper.

This year my resolution is authenticity. It’s harder than it seems, or it is for me. Becoming more fully myself has meant huge change. I would’ve stayed married to the wrong person for a lifetime, persisted in the wrong career, and lived in the wrong place I was so unaware of all the ways I put myself in a box.

I’m not sure how I’ll commemorate this year. I don’t want to burn authenticity, or keep it in a box. Yikes, the box I put myself in was the problem to begin with–crush the box!

What’s your resolution this year?
