A Special Thank You to a Special Man
Writing a historical fiction novel set in Hungary in the 20th Century is a bit difficult. There is very little written about Hungary and the Siege of Budapest in the English language. Although Nadia Knows is a work of fiction, I wanted to stay true to historical events, to write my story, create my characters against a backdrop of reality.
In researching, I looked to personal accounts available on-line, as well as published letters and diaries of those personally involved. A Memoir of Hungary by Sandor Marai provided a sense of the Hungarian people, their deep pride and love for their country, their grief and torment by the Russians and the Nazi's.
Yet, it was one man that gave the most to my well of information, my understanding of the people, the time and place, in which I wished to write, one man who kept me true to what really happened, and for this I am eternally grateful.

Trapped under Nazi occupation, within encircling Soviet forces, a young Hungarian pianist, Nadia, desperately attempts to escape Buda, making a promise she will never keep. “Midnight. Tonight. Come to Pest,” he begged. “This is your last chance. Meet me at the bridge when the Bell Tower tolls twelve.”
But, the Bell Tower never rang...

"Words Worth their Weight" by Rebecca Moll (in this case, weird words worth their weight)

"Wait, what?" you ask. Well, it's the only English word with 3 Ys. Remember in grammar school: A E I O U & Sometimes Y? Well, in this case it's A E I O U and this time, only this time, 3 times Y. And, no this is not algebra! :(
"Weird," you say? Well, consider the definition:
The nearly straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies (such as the sun, moon, and earth during a solar or lunar eclipse) in a gravitational system.
So, not only is the word a rarity, but the event it describes is one, too. :)
