Real Time
We are back in Real Time. No three day weekends until MLK...and yeah, that isn't that far away, but it doesn't carry the stress of Christmas and New Year.
This is Real Time: getting up, going to work, making (or taking out ) dinner and sleep. Weekends are for catch up...the never-ending catch up.
Do you see this as a peaceful time?? Let me know.

Sleep
Love three day weekends because I can catch on sleep...no alarm need be set.
But the animals have a different notion. Why must the dogs decide they need to go out at 5am after they have just been out at 3? Why must the cats decided it is time to discuss old grudges at 4am with hisses and growls? Then, of course, they sleep the rest of the day.
And why, oh why, must the toilet decide the current flap in the tank doesn't seal properly any more and start mini-flushing every 30 minutes or so?
On the positive side, I'm getting better at just rolling over and ignoring it all! Love three day weekends.

Back at it
The year has been long and challenging with a new job, new work culture and new book. I am back at it now, with writing and blogging.
To get started let's discuss the holidays. Whatever you celebrate this time of year, the desire is there to please with the perfect gift, until you realize how much time you do not have. Then the gift cards start accumulating with the gift envelopes.
As one son just said to me "Why? Let's not give gifts next year."
I could like that, but there is always that little voice saying "Give something little." And that little becomes bigger and bigger. I believe I will focus harder on the "little."

Summer's Last Hurrah
It wasn't a bad summer for sitting on the back porch and working on the sequel to The Dream King's Courier: Payback.
The humidity was very tolerable and the temps rarely reached 90. That made me long for some beastly hot weather and wonder what happened to global warming. Someone must have heard because the last two days have been major catch-up time with heat and humidity.
Now people are complaining and it is no use pointing out how benign the weather has been...the howling begins and you become public enemy number two, right after the weatherman.
Stop acting like wusses, people! Embrace the heat because before you know it, you will be complaining about the cold.

Philadelphia Folk Festival
Spent a day that began with showers and ended with sun listening to non-stop music near Schwenksville, PA. Getting there was half the fun (thank you non-updated GPS) but once there the tie-dye shirts and skirts were enough to brighten any event. You could even buy a kilt for the real man in your life.
Old hippies and young hippies-in-training strolled up and down the hills in front of the many stages, and through the wooded area where colorful hammocks were hung for those who needed one.
Missed the Pete Seeger tribute Saturday but am told it was awesome.

Conference Call
I just waited with two colleagues for a conference call that did not happen. While we waited we watched:

So appropriate.

Dead Air
Dead Air will give someone working radio a heart attack. Silence that extends more than the time it takes to breath between sentences has been known to sprain neck muscles as heads snap up in fear...and injure fingers slammed into control buttons to turn on a microphone so you can break that deadly silence with some inane blather.
No, silence is not welcome in radio. But it is very welcome outside of work where even the sound of a busy street can act as white noise and give you space to be silent.
In silence you can listen for thoughts and creative recipes for dinner. You can relax and re-enact your conquest in the last game of "Settlers of Catan." You can smile and you don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

Favorite character
It's so strange how one character can grab the interest of all sorts of readers...those who regularly jump into fantasy and even those who are testing the waters for the first time.
Nan is one such character in the "Dream King's Courier: Payback." Everyone I speak with wants to know more about her.
Nan is strong, she is sensitive, she lets her partner know quite firmly when she disagrees with a decision or action...and Nan is a piece of clothing. A black jacket to be precise.
Men and women both want a Nan and, hell, I wouldn't mind one myself. She offers friendship in tough times, and even love in the darkest of moments.
Who is your favorite fantasy character?
