Bonhoeffer's Ghost
Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Ghost pursues him through time.
“Why”, asks the Ghost, “did one drawn to the Sermon on the Mount and to nonviolence, retaliate?”
We guess the answer:
"The very enormity of Hitler’s evil." Even pacifists said, “We must fight!”
Bonhoeffer offers this explanation, but Bonhoeffer knows the Ghost has more to say. Bonhoeffer himself knows more.
Bonhoeffer’s religionless Christianity builds on the Sermon on the Mount. So too Bonhoeffer’s "world come of age". And his famous notion of cheap grace most certainly attaches a cost to discipleship.
But for doing what? There’s the rub.
Painfully, Bonhoeffer knows there is a lasting contradiction between his actions then - the attempt to kill Hitler - and what he might have done.
So he is not surprised to hear the Ghost explain, “Evil for evil merely breeds more evil.
"Jesus knows a better way; he is more canny. Negotiation is his style and parable his sword. He shakes the very props of Empire with a word.
"Why did he die? It was to show the power and shape of Abba’s love. To vindicate and demonstrate the truth of Abba’s Way.
The Ghost continues. “Dietrich, it is not too late. Inspire those who come after to speak what you could have elaborated from your own prophetic writings. Instead of creeds, obedience. Instead of a set of beliefs, a way of life. Instead of ‘church’, a practiced faith. Instead of assent to war and its ways, a removal of the sword from Caesar and the final coming of age which is Abba’s Way.
“This way confronts but does not kill. This way puts on no airs and claims no truths. It simply acts and values Abba-like That’s all.
“You knew it then: The old way will not work. Do not allow the world to venerate you for the wrong thing.”
Bonhoeffer says, “I am a man of unclean lips. I lived in a world of unclean lips.”
The Ghost replies, “Send a new message to the world. Love is nonviolence. Love is to do no harm. Love is to walk into the maw of evil as Jesus did, raising not one finger to oppose it."
Bonhoeffer answers, "You have already said it. Beyond religion, beyond even 'worldly Christianity', beyond the world as it has been, Abba's way."

Are Aphorisms the future?
Are Aphorisms the future? They are mine.
I have decided and am starting to convert all of my Kindle books into aphorisms and publish books of aphorisms based on general themes. My reasons are several. It is very hard to interpret my books as they are. I tend to write in an aphoristic style. I can express things briefly in a sentence or at most a long paragraph. Writing this way results in reducing what used to be long texts to half or less their size. I suspect the future lies with short form writing and with digital texts. I plan to do this with prose AND fiction. In other words to make each bit of text stand alone on its own terms. My laboratory for this is Twitter. @stephencrose As part of this exercise I will be tweeting mainly in sentences drawn from the texts I intend to publish. If you write as if each sentence you write needs to be a tweet, you will end up with a much more coherent text, or so I feel. I am hoping that as I progress that Zurker will be a community where I can reflect on this process and share the results.

Treatment for my 9/11 Triadic Philosophy Video
Triadic Philosophy is a conscious journey through Reality to Ethics to Aesthetics which equals an action or conclusion which tends toward truth and beauty.
REALITY - There's George Bush reading to school kids. 9/11 happens. The traumatic event and the traumatic result. The reality that we all know in some way or another.
ETHICS - This is where the mishmash of reality encounters four words - universal values - that challenge it and seek to form a perception of it. DEMOCRACY. We're a democracy. Democracy is good. HELPFULNESS. We want to help those who have been harmed. We also want what we do to be perceived as helpful. Doing harm is never helpful. TOLERANCE. We hate our attackers but wisdom counsels that we hold our feelings in abeyance until we can clearly devise what we intend to do. And the final root value - NON-IDOLATRY. We've worshiped force, power, crushing the enemy. Harm for harm. There is always another way.
AESTHETICS - This is the action phase of Triadic Philosophy. What do we do after the collision of 9/11 REALITY and UNIVERSAL ETHICS? We do not knee-jerk fight. We do not create the obscenity of Shock and Awe. We seek a different sign. And it is right there in what we have considered. Not just the ethics. But the President reading to the children. For our resolution moves beyond the binary either or of tit for tat, the karma game.
We think first perhaps of Sherlock Holmes. Of an open and transparent step by step, logical apprehension of the persons responsible, of a clever and cutting and devastatingly effective assault on the binary thinking that led to the attack and that we are now rejecting. And returning to that classroom, we might opt to add in a little bit of Nancy Drew. For when you think about it who better than George Bush to be the avatar of a change in the way the world works. This all points to an aesthetically pleasing conclusion that is merely underlined by the reality of what happened when binary won the day. Military suicides. Countless deaths all around. No moral leg to stand upon. And no going back and doing it over. Triadic Philosophy is the answer to binary idiocy. Over and out.
Triadic Philosophy is now expressed in four brief, inexpensive Kindle books.

An Intellectual Update - Thinking Never Ceases
My Lexicon
In this era of ambient copyright and undefined roles, when people invent themselves by even rejecting their own names for some descriptive (or self-deprecating) moniker, it behooves me to lay claim to some original thinking. The following are phrases I arrived at myself to describe thoughts or theories I have developed over time. In one case — that of “benign genocide” — I later found that an Australian thinker had used the same phrase to describe the fate of aborigines.
Here are phrases I feel are significant and original with brief explanations.
Creedal Messianism
Christianity is the attribution to Jesus of messianic status and the transition of this thinking into a creed which effectively distorts and even inverts the meaning of the narrative we have been given. A living way that only a few brave minorities have embraced was turned into a religion that has compromised the values of non-idolatry, tolerance, helpfulness and democracy. Religion is the problem in my declension of things.
Benign Genocide
I arrived at this during my time working in UN agencies a decade ago. It refers to the fusion of capitalism and philanthropy into a system that accepts and even helps perpetuate predictable loss of life in the millions around the world. Capitalism and philanthropy have failed to stem the absence of education, human rights and medical care that is universal among the dispossessed.
Herculean Conscience
Following Jonestown in 1978, my book Jesus and Jim Jones proposed the term Herculean conscience to describe the sort of person (found in the middle class members of the Guyana community) who takes on his or her shoulders the burden of achieving justice throughout the world. When a reasonable desire to be a good citizen and decent person becomes fused with rage at injustice and subject to paranoid leadership it becomes Herculean conscience and can lead to destruction both of the Herculean individual and those he or she would “help”.
Jaws of Hell
There is a real world out there where power is fused with the capacity to act with impunity. I see this as the actual residence of what theology has understood to be the devil or Satan. I believe that one of Jesus’ purposes was to overcome this construct and locate the resolution of the problem of evil within history. I have used the term "jaws of hell" to cover speculation regarding conspiracies, crimes, the results of deception by powerful persons and other depredations that are entirely the result of the fusion of power and impunity and the absence of laws or values that restrain the impulse to confuse ends and means.
“Grass Roots Church”
This is the title of a book I wrote in the 1960s. The phrase refers to the idea of local ecumenism in which the functions of the church -- chaplaincy, teaching and abandonment -- are carried out in a rational way.
As a sort of antithesis to all of the above, I will append this little sonnet from my collection Winning The War Within :
Being remembered is our great brass ring:
Lou Gehrig waving to a tearful crowd
Top gun first woman tour de anything
A photo of some fleeting moment proud
How fatuous to store what time defies
Believing our forevers really last
This life is fleeting as smoke on the rise
Wind dissipates the dust of every past
Some say that love will in the end remain
Thus the Apostle in his greatest text
He staked his whole life on life yet again
He had no question what was coming next
It’s much more likely we’ll keep keeping on
Than we’ll have life here after we have gone
Since the above was written, I have made Triadic Philosophy the umbrella for my developing sense of reality.

Attending to the true within
We are all geniuses
Attending to the true within
Our minds give rise to signs
Like supple minnows
glistening in the vague
We catch one with our will
give it a name
squeeze out the squirm
like Adam does
We manage it
We fashion it
experiment
it's the next thing
as simple
as our
genius can allow
We thus invent
a future
every day
continuously
in common continuity
in spurts of inner ecstasy
in multi-tasking harmony
almost never having time
to think
we are all geniuses

It is an effort to create a universal open-source philosophy based on thinking in threes.
The following explanation is offered up front to demonstrate the ease with which the basic concept can be shared.
Triadic Philosophy can be explained simply. It is a way of thinking in threes. First you stop and clear your mind. Next, you think up the reality you need or want to deal with from whatever rises up within you. With that clear, you move to ethics. Run your concern, whatever it is, past these four words - tolerance, democracy, helpfulness and non-idolatry. Some modification or direction for your reality will emerge. Then you move to the third and final stage. You submit your evolved thought to aesthetics. You think of an action or response or expression that you hope and believe will have elements of truth and beauty. Three stages of thought and a result. There it is. It may sound crazy, but it works. It may sound simple, but it is profound. It is the key to beginning to understand reality. This introduction is common to every book in this series because it is important to get started. The statements and aphorisms and maxims that follow are all simply signposts that may help you as you become the consciously engaged in triadic thinking.

We can access our own unconscious at no cost.
We can access our own unconscious at no cost.
You can discover your deepest thoughts with eight words.
Me, Nature, Society, Shells, Networks, Pleasure, Financial, Manifestation.
List your options.
A question, eight words, and numerical answers is all you need.
You can learn what you actually want.
With your question in mind, score one to ten how each answer affects you.
How does a decision impact you personally?
How does a decision impact nature?
What effect will a decision have on society?
How does your choice affect shells (the space you are in)?
How are your networks affected by your choice?
What is the financial implication of your choice?
How does your choice rate as a manifestation of you?
You are the best judge of what will work for you.
What you actually desire generally surfaces.
You can rate criteria as you wish when making decisions.
Using a decisional grid can reveal what's only semi- or even unconscious.
The decisional grid is free.
The decisional grid can work for anyone.

My metrical version of the Lord's Prayer.
In Triadic Philosophy the Daily Discipline is drawn from the indices of the second in the root triad Reality (Icon) , Ethics (Index), Aesthetics (Symbol). This second, Ethics, contains the blunt universal truths confronting all human endeavor.
It is an index of what we need as we negotiate our way to reality. Ethics contains the ontological values of tolerance, democracy, helpfulness and non-idolatry; the assertions of a prayer for all, which is a template for positive existence; and some specific ways to sort through the stuff of life in a creative, useful manner. The "prayer for all" I use is my metrical version of the Lord's Prayer.
Abba whose home in heaven is
Hallowed and holy is your name
Let your realm come your will be done
Til earth and heaven are the same
Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive the wrongs that we have done
As we forgive those who do wrong
Lead us not into temptation
Deliver us from evil, Lord
And safely guide us to your shore
Yours is the power to heal and mend
Yours is the glory evermore
Reality Is All is a ground-breaking declaration of a new way to do philosophy. http://buff.ly/18ZMpyC

Making philosophy triadic is the key to moving beyond lethal conflict
I see Peirce's triads as prior to the achievement of a universal philosophy. That is one reason I do not presume to speak "for" anyone but myself while confessing great indebtedness. I see little hope for philosophy unless it gets from Reality to our active reality. And if along the way it has essentially relegated ethics and aesthetics to the stratosphere, while arriving at a notion that the end point is metaphysics, then I also object. I am coming to think of CSP's phenomenology as a sort of meta that would be essential to a coterie of the informed perhaps, but is useless without coming down somewhere for every person. Maybe I will end up Piercifying James! Or going beyond. We live in a binary world and culture due to our dominant, inherited philosophies and I feel making philosophy triadic is the key to moving beyond lethal conflict. That is motivation enough and time is is for individuals finite.

Democracy is universal. It's how we live together nonviolently.
Remember the power of angry masses in old movies. Witness the use of real angry masses in what passes for news. It's the binary-feeders at work.
Triadic Philosophy paves the way for an end to this deleterious celebration of conflict leading to violence. The sign of this sea change was orderly lines at polls in the United States exercising the right to vote in the 2012. Peaceful. Effective. Beautiful. True.
The sooner we move from the binary either-or trap of assuming you "beat the man" by loud, screaming numbers, to a chorus of delighted idiot commentary, the sooner a new exodus, a new power to the people, built on three universal elements of change. 1. Unjust reality. 2. Remedial values (Democracy) 3. Experimental actions, grounded in Aesthetics, in truth and beauty.
Those voting lines were beautiful. They changed politics. The clothing of the Emperor frayed. The beautiful truth is this: Democracy is universal. It's how we live together nonviolently.
The future lies in lines like these.

The self is a spectrum from primal to sublime.
Insightful self-observation sees the self as a spectrum from primal to sublime and understands all thought and action in terms of the values an act manifests.
There is no correlation between values and where on the spectrum one happens to be at any given time.
The choice of values is always the prime element of a liberating freedom and validates freedom of the will.
The highest (ontologocal) value of Triadic Philosophy is Non-idolatry.
The three active, complementary values are Helpfulness, Tolerance and Democracy.
