The Way you See the World

Seen through sad eyes, the world is sad.
Seen through beautiful eyes, the world is truly beautiful.

Be happy, be beautiful, be loving. Create the world you wish to see in the way that you see the world.

Feng Shui

As I puffed up the cushion on my chair and sat to write this article, I started to think to myself what does feng shui have to do with writing?

As I tidied the pile of books to the left of my computer neatly away, I began to wonder about optimising energy flows and wondered what effect this might have on my ability to write.

As I placed my glass of orange and the remains of my chocolate bar just so on the right-hand side of my computer, I pondered on how one’s year of birth dictates everythin...

Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwiches

The orchestra playing their hearts out – violins soaring, cellos winding sonorously upwards, bass drum driving the symphony ever faster towards a glorious crescendo. Then, suddenly a blast of light ripping through the stage bringing it all to a shocking, eyeball-searing end.

The hall had been packed and aromatic. The Sidebottom family had come straight from the curry-house and the peas in their meal had been making their effects felt. Silent but deadly had been the watchword. The rest of the...

Flat Earth Myth

When I first started writing – in my innocenceand naivete, I used to think that I could scribble down anything that came to mind. My very first short story was about a middle-aged man called Herbert who suffered from bowel incontinence and who, to make matters worse, had a spaceship land on his front lawn. He was only saved from humiliation by God coming back from holiday and (literally) saving his ass.

Now, I thought that it was quite an interesting story, but although it provoked laughter i...

On Marriage

Thought this was funny when I read it just now in The Year of Magical Thinking:

“for richer for poorer but never for lunch”.

Made me snort.

Happiness

It strikes me that as we progress through life, we cut ourselves off from our sources of happiness and connect more strongly to sources of sorrow.

We need to reconnect with the music that the kids are making these days, the comic books that say so much of life and the nights out when we laughed until dawn.

We need to disconnect from the bad news in the headlines, the routine gatherings around the latest obituaries and the sober nights spent alone in front of the television.

Let us reclaim our...

Friend

I ever wanted thee for friend
But strained to find the how;
Yet despite words that oft offend
My friend I find thee now.

Und3r Th3 Gard3n

fingers
partly with nails
scratch dig scatter worms

find
effort to scream
love gut inside out

special
welcome to come
that you alwayswrote

mind
whether you look
spread and spreadinglegs

bolder
only with you
yet we disband now

dance
taking the love
my books flying off

taking
tragic blood loss
all cats yearning me

chance
mopping my brow
take me driving now
