Exorcism

Cast out your demons! And by this, I don’t mean the little red guy sat on your shoulder – I mean yourbad habits. I mean the things that prevent you from getting down to business in the writing game.

Here a few things that might bedevil your progress as a writer, and some suggested solutions:

Pride. Here’s your profile: your name is Jack, and you’re alright. You write stuff off the top of your head and you never go back to edit it into shape. Hey – if it’s good enough for your mother, then it...

Earth

image

I just went outside and felt the earth and it was so good that I just had to share it with y’all.

Oh, wait – one last thing: this post is dedicated to Jyotee who blogs as isolated_girl at http://www.jyoteeblog.wordpress.com. Just because she asked.

Regicide

Zombies and kings have something in common – the most popular way to kill them is to cut off their heads.

Zombies are not, and will not be, the only fictional (you hope) creatures to have made it from the pages of pulp fiction to the big screen. For your delectation, I’m now going to speculate on the next big thing to topple zombies from their throne, in the kingdom of schlock horror. Follow my words closely if you want to get in on the ground floor.

Here is my blue sky thinking about the spi...

Anesthesia

Do you ever get pain in your fingers, hand, arm, shoulder or neck when you write for extended periods of time? Join the club.

Here are a few effective ways of preventing or easing that pain:

Instruments. Use a thick, rough, soft pen with smoothly flowing ink. These things preventyour muscles from having to grip the pen too hard. Relax. Don’t grip anything too tightly. This includes your pen, the edge of your desk, or the arm of your writing partner when you are writing that particularly scar...

Evening In

I’m driving along last night and I see a guy walking down the street carrying an eight pack of strong lager and a can of squirty cream, and I’m thinking to myself ‘wow – that dude looks like he has a much more interesting evening than me planned out!’

Birth Control

There are people who genuinely do not wish to bring their written work into the world by means of publishing it,and we must respect their wishes and support them in their endeavours.

The reasons fordecidingnot to publishare primarily personal:

The writer’s mental health. It might be thatcertain writersare just not the sort that could cope easilywith the hassle of worldwide fame: being asked for autographs and selfies; having money in their bank account; enduring endless articles, tweets andc...

Abortion

Words are powerful. If you allow them to, they have the abilityto releasetransformative feelings in the human heart – for good or bad. Words also have the ability to motivate usto action, or stop us from acting. It is for these reasons that it is wise to carefully consider the types of things we write and subsequently whether we should unleash those wordsonthe world.

These consideration are particularly important for someone who has great skill with the written word.

Consider the following qu...
