Dizzy

When I lay back on the bed the room starts spinning. I haven’t had a drink in 25 years – what’s this all about please? Its quite a pleasant sensation actually but I wouldn’t want it to happen when I’m stood up. Nothing hurts and my ears feel fine. It’s been happening for three days now but nothing else is affected. I’m puzzled.

In other news:

I’m eating too much sugar I’m eating too much – period I’m in a tropical country I’m mosquito bitten – slightly I’m worried about my job I’m coping ver...

Feeling Good

These are a few things that make me feel good:

Agreeing with she, even when I don’t Writing something I like, even when it’s ignored Having a good cry for the right reasons Waking up in the morning feeling refreshed Completing a nice piece of work and doing it well A righteous bowel movement Writing a list of things but not going so far that it starts to get silly.

‘Nuff said.

Interesting Stuff

I feel that if I write about a certain kind of people then that certain kind of people would read it. If I write about another kind of people then it would appeal to them instead.

It follows that if I write about something that everyone likes then maybe everyone would read it and like it.

So, what are the universal themes? What does everyone do at one time or another?

I was thinking that maybe Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing and Fornicating would be good candidates. What is there to life aside fro...

Mungal

Almost everything in Trinidad is called a ting, apart from the tings that are called aam.

Trinidadians will say, with a completely straight face ‘pass me that ting’ and will expect you to know exactly what they mean. If you’re lucky, they will point to the ting with their lips at the same time, but don’t get your hopes up.

If, after telling you in plain language what they want – including the helpful lip point, you still express confusion, then a Trini might do something else with their lips...

A Different Kind of Pain

“Will it hurt?”

“Only as much as it hurts now, Mom. Does it -”

“No, no – the drugs are working fine,” a faint smile, but then serious, “but that’s not what I meant. When your grandmother came here I saw something in her eyes – a shadow – a dark one. It was only for a moment, but it was her last. I think about it more and more often. Will it get me too?

Her voice trembled at the end a little but I found myself wondering again how she could sound so … together when she looked like that! Her bod...

The Wander Society

Someone told me today about a new book – The Wander Societyby Keri Smith, so I looked it up and read a few pages.

The main thrust seem to be that we should get out more instead of sittingin front of a computer all day. Well, that’s what I took from it anyway.

But therein lies the fatal flaw – thisisakin to picking up a book that says, on the cover – DO NOT READ BOOKS! Or put more succinctly – do as I say, not as I do.

Here’s something from inside (my highlights):

I had justenough time to pos...

Sofa Dwarfs

I have a niece who, having almost finished university, is working in a coffee shop (or something like that). As well as being smart as a whip, she also happens to be rather pretty so I suggested she should bea model (yeah, it sounded as weird coming out of my mouth as you might expect).

Truth be told, as well as being intelligent and easy on the eye, she is also quite petite, so when she heard my suggestion, she laughed and said that she wastoo small for that. That’s when I suggested that per...

Robots

I was thinking the other day about gender and then I found myself wondering whether robots in the future would have gender. What do you reckon?

Today I read about plans to give robots the ability to dream. A lot of human dreams are apparently about being naked in public and so the article ended with speculation about what the equivalent for a robot might be. I wonder what a naked robot would look like to itself.

The future’s going to be a whole different place. I’m quite looking forward to it...

My Fortune in the Scars

The world has brutalised me. I bear the marks on my body as evidence. What part of the past has given me fuel for my journey into the future? Once cut, twice a cutter. Can you read my fortune in my scars?

Lobster Ink & Dame Judy

Travelling is a funny thing to do in this age of green ethics and conservation sensibilities. Personally, I’d much rather stay at home and save all those greenhouse gases being produced on my behalf.

But on the plus side, one does get to meet some rather interesting people.

I just spent some time chatting with the concierge of the Hilton Hotel in Gatwick and he was telling me about the training they go through. One of his favourite platforms, as he calls them, is Lobster Ink.

He says that he...
