When You Change, Your World Changes

The most recent graduate from my 30-day program is a CEO of a Financial Services company.  He was feeling overly stressed and anxious because of money, his teenage kids, and all the things that go with divorce.  His company is doing well, but he wants to grow it substantially in 2019.

Because of the events in his life, he had become overly demanding and impatient with his kids, his employees, and even his strategic partners and prospects.  After just the first two sessions he started to see a difference in himself.  The first sign of change he observed was becoming patient with those around him.  Most importantly to him, with his kids.  Because he had changed, the way he treated them changed.  They began asking, “Dad, what’s made you different?”  Let me give you an example.

His teenage daughter loves chocolate.  One evening, after a long day at work, my client saw her eating out of a large bag of chocolates.  His first reaction, and what had been typical in the past, was to grab the bag from her and tell her she couldn’t have any more.  Instead, he looked at her and said, “You have a whole bag of chocolates.  I trust you to eat just a little”, and he walked away.  His new reaction was so shocking to his daughter that she had a hard time believing that was her dad!  Their relationship has transformed to become much closer, with love and mutual respect.

His son has experienced similar events.

In regards to his company, the closing ratio is already increasing.  For his part, because of some of the exercises I took him through, he’s spending less time with people who aren’t a good fit for his company. He now quickly identifies who to invest time with, whether those people are potential employees, partners, or prospects.  His level of patience and understanding have risen so that the time he invests in relationships yields dividends.

This client has retained my services for the remainder of the year and he has a solid plan for doubling his business in 2019!

How was this, and much more, accomplished in just 30 days?

Our outside world is created from our inner reality; the story we tell ourselves about who we are, who we can be (and not be), what we do, what we can have (and not have) are all created in our mind.  So, when we change, our world changes.

How would you design your life to be different?  Let’s chat today!

The Cost When Another Company Steals Your People

Each one of the examples of conscious beliefs I gave earlier have a more powerful subconscious belief that preceded it. And, like a computer, we never even know that all that processing is going on in an instant.

There they go. One of your top people walking out the door of your company for the last time because they’re going to work for your competitor. If your competitor were stealing computers, desks, chairs, almost anything else, you would already be on the phone to the police and your attorney.

Yet, you smile and wave goodbye, while knowing they are taking with them important assets from your company;

Intellectual Property that no one else may possessIntimate knowledge of the inside workings of your organizationKnowledge of your customers, vendors, and other partnersAn understanding of your culture that they helped create and were an influencer in support of it

And there are so many intangibles that are not recognized, or monetized, until they’re gone that may slowly, or violently, come back to hurt your company!

According to the Society of Human Resource Managers (SHRM), the hard cost is 6 to 9 months’ salary on average. Which means that an employee making $40,000 a year there are $20,000 to $30,000 in recruiting and training expenses associated with their departure. For highly educated executive positions, one study showed that the cost is 213 percent of annual salary, which means that the cost to replace a $100k CEO is $213,000!

How do people decide to leave?

The reasons are numerous. From my long history in the business world, the vast majority of the time is explained by one brief axiom:

“People don’t leave jobs, they leave managers”

The relationship an employee has with their immediate manager, boss, leader, etc. has the deepest impact on whether you get to retain all the costs associated with bringing people into your organization, training them, developing them, exposing them to your Intellectual Property, customers, Strategic Partners, vendors, etc. or your competitor gets to reap the benefit of your investment.  It makes sense that you would make sure that those you put in oversight positions would have the leadership qualities needed to help their staff be highly productive, highly engaged, and represent and foster the culture which you seek. Again, from my own experience and from story after story that recount the almost unbelievable behaviors of those in positions of oversight, many executives do not.

Is there a better answer?

Before I answer that question, I want you to imagine your company all the way back to it’s beginning. Now, suppose you had kept all the people who were the top producers, were creative and innovative, and possessed raw talent throughout the years, what do you think your company would be like today? How would it be different? Better?

Is there a way to achieve 100% retention of employees? No, and you don’t want to.  Let’s face it, there are some people you’re glad to see make that last walk out the door! You’re actually happy to send them to your competitor. However, you can achieve a much higher retention by thinking outside the box of the usual solutions that are promoted as the answer.

There is a solution that is cost-effective, drives immediate results, and can keep all those dollars, Intellectual Property, and all the other losses mentioned earlier, from walking out your door. A quote that is attributed to Albert Einstein says, “You can’t be solve a problem at the same level of consciousness that created it.” Yet, that’s exactly what most trainers, consultants, and others attempt to do.

People’s thoughts and actions are preceded by the beliefs they hold at the “conscious” level, of which Einstein wrote.

It’s because of their conscious beliefs that a boss and a staff member can’t get along. (Example: Boss, “That person is just lazy”. Employee, “She/he doesn’t give me the tools I need to do my job. They’re a lousy boss”)

It’s because of their conscious beliefs that coworkers don’t mix well. (Example: Coworker 1,”She thinks she’s better than everyone else” Coworker 2, “He always talks first in all our meetings as if what he has to say is the most important”)

It’s because of their conscious beliefs that people are unproductive. (Example: I hate making cold calls. They don’t work, anyway”)

Behind these examples are beliefs at a deeper level, another “level of consciousness”. When all the surface (conscious) reasons and excuses are pulled back, what are exposed are the real beliefs that are causing the problems. Much like computers that process huge amounts of information that we never see, the human subconscious mind has “programs” that are constantly running. Many of these programs have been running in us since childhood and we aren’t even aware how they are influencing today. There are programs running is us from the hurts, habits, and  hang-ups we’ve experienced in the past, which we may not realize.

I offer solutions to solve problems at a different “level of consciousness”. Contact me if you’d like your organization to experience solutions that are cost-effective, drive immediate results, and can keep all those dollars, Intellectual Property, and all the other losses mentioned earlier, from walking out your door.

Do What You Can’t

Samsung’s current ad uses the phrase, “Do what you can’t”.  A gentleman by the name of Casey Neistat coined the phrase to celebrate those in the film industry who are told they can’t make a film with no money, they can’t get a superstar to be interviewed on their podcast, they can’t make a film in an exotic place, etc….but they do.

In some people, like Neistat, being told they can’t do
something only means they’ll try that much harder to do it.

It’s one thing for someone else tell you that you can’t do something, it’s another when you say it to yourself.  When it comes from the outside, it can actually make us more determined and more powerful.  When it comes from the inside, we feel weakened, drained of energy, and fearful.  And, fear is based on what we know about ourselves. Each fear is an “I can’t” materialized.

However, I work with people’s “I can’t” every day.  And, very successfully.  What kind of “I can’t” have I turned
into “I can!”?

I can’t confidently approach people who are wealthy

I can’t win the most prestigious award my company offers

I can’t make presentations in front of C-Level executives

I can’t see myself as being valuable

I can’t be a millionaire

I can’t make enough money to do all the things I want in
life

I can’t get rid of the trauma in my life

I can’t be thin, healthy, and attractive

I can’t learn and recall information quickly

And the list goes on and on infinitum

What is your “I can’t” that you want to do?  Are you interested in learning how you, too,can turn your “I can’t” into your “I can”?  Contact me now.

Beliefs – Results Matrix

[image error]Transformative Thinking Copyright 2018

WE sometimes wonder how we got where we are.  That may be in business, in a relationship,
or in life, in general.  Unless you’ve
taken a real interest in understanding how we humans work, then it probably
never occurred to you that there is a process that takes place each and every
time we act and get a result.

You see, most of us think life just happens.  We want something, so we do what it takes to
get it.  That “something” may
be a material object, a concept (such as money), or immaterial, like love or
happiness.  To make this more tangible,
I’ve created the Belief-Results Matrix (BRM).
The picture below illustrates the concept:

Belief – All abstract knowledge is based on belief.  All beliefs are based on that knowledge being true.

These beliefs can run from something as simple as, “All
people who are nice smile when you meet them” to as complex as “You
can never have anything nice because you don’t deserve it.”  Our beliefs become part of who we are through

Examples set by parents and other authority figures when we
were young

Repetition of information, such as Group Think, advertising,
and peer and family pressure

Generalizing information.
If we had a negative encounter with a specific type of person, we may
generalize that all people who are like that person are bad.  This is a belief.

Information Bias.  We
may be exposed to limited information about a subject and, therefore, believe
the information we have is the only correct information.

Intention/Thought

I’ve grouped these two together because they are so closely
aligned.  Let me explain from a
Neuroscience view.

In our brain, we have about 100 billion neurons and these
are capable of making more connections than all the particles in the universe.  When we have a thought, we think we have just
one, or a few.  In actuality, we have
many more thoughts than what we know.
The Executive Function of the brain in the Prefrontal Cortex does all of
the strategizing and planning.  We have
an intention of the idea or outcome that we want.  All of the thoughts generated by the
Prefrontal Cortex are funneled through a part of the brain called the
Thalamus.  Of all of those thoughts, only
one gets through the Thalamus, and it’s the one we were intending and believing.  Neuroscientists call this “Winner Takes
All”, because only the one thought gets through to our conscious mind.

So, we believe and we intend a thought.  What’s next?

Feeling.

Some people, especially men, think it’s ridiculous to
believe that we have, or should pay attention to, our feelings.  However, that’s what our bodies do, they feel
sensations.  Some people feel their sensations
more than others and these people are called Kinesthetics.  They literally check their feelings when they
receive information and before they give information to make sure how it
“feels”.  But, we all do it to
some degree.

The real point here is that when we have a belief which
creates an intended thought, it’s for the unconscious purpose of creating a
desired feeling.  Do Bill and Melinda
Gates want to give away their massive fortune?
No, it’s not about giving their money away.  It’s the feeling they enjoy by doing so.

Unconsciously, every time we have a thought and are about to
turn the thought into a behavior, we check to see if the feeling we get is the
one we want.  It may be that your child
broke your favorite possession and the anger flares up in you and you
unconsciously say, “Yes, that’s how I want to feel right now!”.

Behavior

Now, we’ve gone from belief to feeling and the behavior is
next.  To carry on with our illustration;
You’ve said, “Yes, that’s how I want to feel right now!”, it goes
through your body and mind and you act accordingly.  And, you will probably regret it later.

It doesn’t have to be negative.  Again, Bill and Melinda Gates enjoy the
feeling they get when they see the good their money can do.  You have experienced the pleasure of giving a
gift to someone from whom you wanted their love and affection.

Result

Here’s where it all comes together…the result.  What this means is that what you have now in
your life is the result of the Belief-Result Matrix.  It also means that if you don’t like any part
of your life, you can change it by going back to the starting point, your belief
about that particular thing.  Change your
belief and you’ll change the result.

This isn’t the same as changing a habit.  That’s still working at the conscious level
and can be overtaken by the unconscious at any time.  Your beliefs run at the unconscious level and
can only be changed there.  Let’s
consider a couple of examples:

If you’re in sales, then you’ve had the experience of cold
calling.  If you have done any amount at
all, then you’ve encountered someone who was negative and rejected you.  For most salespeople, they remember this
vividly and it causes them to hold back from doing this important
activity.  But, what if that memory could
vanish and only good memories of cold calling came to mind?  What if every time you were rejected, it became
a source of feeling empowered to move on to the next call?  How would that change your business?

Another example:  A
woman told me about wanting a Swatch Watch when she was young.  She worked hard to save the money to buy
it.  When she finally had collected the
funds, her dad took her to buy the Swatch Watch.  When he saw what she was buying, he said,
“You’re going to waste your money on that piece of sh__?!!!”  All the way into her 40’s she’s carried
around a guilt complex about buying anything that doesn’t have practical
value.  Since then she’s denied herself
many things that most of us take for granted, such as a Venti Starbucks,
because, “It’s a waste of money”.

What limiting belief, what negative tape, do you have running
in your unconscious that, once removed, would change your life for the better?  What result would you like to change in your
life?

Send me an email or give me a call and we can discuss how
changing one belief can change your entire world!

It’s Time to Unbreak Your Dream Machine

Dreams…we daydream, night dream, we go to dreamland and
dreamworld; we can be dreamlike, dreamless, and we can be outdreamt. People can
be dreamy, dreamboats, and the dreamiest. What we know for sure is that people
dream and when this subject is written about, many times it’s concerning
dreaming about what we want; the big house(s), the boat or yacht, the vacation
home(s), the successful business(es), etc. This article is about something much
more personal; dreaming about who you really are.  Your Core Identity.

So many times, we sell-out who we are for the things we are
told we should have by the society in which we live. What if you were to dream
about who you desire to be without the external influences of material
possessions, societal expectations, and any other external influences?

From my experience of working with thousands of people, I
have found very few people 1) know their Core Identity, 2) if they know it,
they are living true to it, and 3) dream of being something other than the
roles they play in life. It’s like the Dr. Seuss book, And to Think it Happened on
Mulberry Street
. The main character, Marco, fantasizes of this
wonderful circus following him on his way home from school, which is transformed
from everyday people and animals along the way. With this amazing circus
in-tow, Marco rushes up the front steps of his home, eager to tell his father
his imagined, but seemingly real, story. However, when his father questions him
about what he saw on his way home, his face turns red and he says, “Nothing …
but a plain horse and wagon on Mulberry Street.”

Marco’s Dream Machine had been broken because of someone
else’s expectations. Has yours? Let’s put it to the test. If you could choose
any and all of the values, traits, and characteristics you would like to be,
what would you be like? If your dream leads you to only involve the roles you
play, such as an executive, an employee, a spouse, a daughter/son, a
mother/father, etc., then I encourage you to journey further inward. But, you
may say…

“The Assessments
Told Me Who I Am”

I’ve worked within the Employee Behavioral Assessment
Industry for over 20 years, from helping build them from start-to-finish to selling
and implementing them within corporations. I was told by the psychologists and
psychometrists who I interacted with that our cognitive abilities, interests,
and behaviors become pretty much set-in-stone around age 16. I used to believe
that. I don’t any longer and here’s why.

First, neuroscience has proven that we have the ability to make new neuropathways well into our 80’s and to continue learning and growing all the while. It’s called Neuroplasticity. This means we can change our behaviors because we can change our beliefs and thoughts. In fact, it’s possible to strategically facilitate the unwiring and rewiring of the neuropathways that aren’t helping you to achieve what you want in life.  Watch the video below that shows how this happens.

Watch the brain create thoughts and remove others

Second, my experience of working with people has shown me
the truth that we are who we are because of our experiences in life, which is
only what these assessments are measuring.

You may be thinking, “And…?” What I mean by that is we have
adapted and changed ourselves to become what our experiences in life teach us
to be, many times with negative consequences.  It’s also true that we have adapted and
changed ourselves because of societal expectations and to acquire the material
possessions we want. Therefore, I believe assessments tell us who we have
become, not who we really are.  As an
example, every person I have ever worked with who was labeled as an
“Introvert” really wasn’t.  In
every instance, I was able to trace the introvert-like behaviors to an event,
or events, in their life where they found safety by exhibiting introvert
behaviors.  Being an introvert was a
survival technique. Once that experience, or experiences, were removed or
changed, these people became much more outgoing, some full-blown extroverts!

Unbreak Your Dream
Machine by Discovering Who You Really Are

What if you could live life to the full because you became
unshackled from all the “stuff” that’s holding you back; the hurts, habits,
hang-ups, and limiting beliefs that you’ve collected through the years? Let
your imagination loose for a few minutes and sense how that feels. If you could
wash away all of the negative events and beliefs from your mind, just imagine
the person you would be. You could be enough; good enough, smart enough, pretty/handsome
enough, powerful enough, etc.!

Feel how much more powerful you are just imagining it! I
wonder if you can feel how much more freedom you have! Feel the energy begin to
release from inside you as you become lighter, your head rising up, your
shoulders going back, your back straightening, and your chest pushing forward!

Have you ever had a dream and that dream became real? It gives you that inner feeling that somehow you knew…that something was going to be different. You can have that feeling now because it is possible to become who you really are instead of who you have become. And, that’s a wonderful reason to unbreak your Dream Machine!

Why Quick Decision Makers Are More Successful

Andy Andrews is famous for his saying, “Successful people
make their decisions quickly and change their minds slowly. Failures make their
decisions slowly and change their minds quickly.”

Is there any real science behind this saying?  Yes, and what follows is a brief explanation.

What happens when we go with our first reaction

If you’ve ever taken one of those personality assessments
like a Myers-Briggs, Predictive Index, or some other DiSC-type assessment, then
you’re familiar with the instructions to go with your first reaction to each
question or statement.  The reason these
assessments ask you to do that is because they know, from a psychological
standpoint, your first response most closely aligns to your true feelings and
thoughts.

Neuroscience has shown that we feel first and then create an
intellectual response.  Whether you like
it, or not, your feelings trump your intellect every time.  The reason for this is that your unconscious
mind is at least 1,000,000 times more powerful than your conscious mind.  Your unconscious controls all of your automatic
functions; heart rate, walking, talking, playing sports, and so much more.  Think about it, when was the last time you intellectually
calculated how fast a ball was coming at you and precisely where to place your
hand to catch it?

The same is true of business decisions.  That’s why it’s been stated over and over that
success in business is 80% psychology and 20% skill.  Your unconscious mind knows what your intent
is and how any given decision will impact that intent.  This can get into Quantum Physics, as far as
how intent affects your decisions, but I won’t go there, for now.  Suffice it to say that both sciences,
Neuroscience and Quantum Physics, align with this concept.

Paralysis of Analysis

Yep, you can continue to gather more and more data as you’re
making decisions only to begin second-guessing yourself and your decisions.  This is where your conscious mind takes
control over your unconscious mind and all the fears, doubts, and worries climb
to the top.  Remember, your conscious
mind is much weaker and much more limited than your unconscious.  You may begin comparing spreadsheets,
documents, advice that’s been given, etc., and find that you have the feeling
of being overwhelmed with information.
So much so that you may decide not to decide.

That’s where the second part of Mr. Andrews statement comes
into play, ” Failures make their decisions slowly and change their minds
quickly.”  You either decide not to
decide, or decide, but change your decision several times for fear of making
the “wrong” decision.  Either
path leads to decisions that are of poor quality and potential failure.

Go with Your Gut

Other contributing factors are:

You have 100 billion neurons in your brain

You have 40,000 neurons in your heart

You have 100,000 neurons in your stomach.  Scientists many times refer to the stomach as
the “Second Brain”.

This means that you should pay attention to the feelings you
get from your heart and stomach when making decisions.  Ignoring them is like ignoring your most
trusted confidante.

So, the next time you delay a decision to gather more
information, really consider if it’s needed, or if it’s simply delay tactic.  Making no decision is making a decision.

Auditions are Being Held for You to be Yourself. Apply Within

[image error]What masks do you wear?

Do you ever feel like you aren’t living life as the true you, as if you’re wearing different masks just to survive?  There’s been much written about being authentic, but, the unfortunate thing is that most people have gotten so lost in the roles they play in life that they don’t know:

Who they are without playing a role

How to divest themselves of those roles to discover their Core Identity

Once discovered, how to use their Core Identity to bring about happiness and satisfaction they haven’t experienced for years

There are many ways people have used to try to “find themselves”.  There are multi-weekend workshops that are intended to strip a person down to their core and rebuild them.  There are the multi-day workshops people attend in masses where a “guru” pumps them up through intense words, emotions, behaviors, and music.  There are coaches who use artful questions to cause their clients to ponder themselves and the universe around them.  Some people go to exotic places to meditate for months.  These methods are not usually sustainable and the initial effects dissipate in the matter of a few days to a week, or so. Yet, others use drugs, like ayahuasca, to discover themselves and create change.

All but the last method have a common challenge; They don’t get past the part of the human mind that does everything it can to keep things the same.  Yes, there is a specific part of the brain that works to keep you from changing.  Rebecca Saxe at MIT has done extensive research on the subject of Theory of Mind (ToM).  The aforementioned methods cannot breach the barrier to change.

Virginia Satir, famed family psychologist, once said, “Most
people think the will to survive is the strongest instinct in human beings, but
it isn’t.  The strongest instinct is to
keep things familiar [the same].”
This is true even if we are dissatisfied with our life because many
people feel that they’ve learned to deal with the problems they have and change
might introduce problems they aren’t prepared to deal with.

The last method, ayahuasca, has its own challenges.  These include LSD-type experiences, the need
for a “guide” in the event of a bad “trip”, the drug is
illegal in some countries, and many people choose not to experiment with
mind-altering drugs out of religious, or other, beliefs.

An Alternative

Having been a Senior Pastor, mentor, COO, VP Sales, and an NLP
Master Practitioner, I have created an alternative to finding your Core
Identity that is quick, circumvents the part of the brain that rejects change,
has no ill-effects, and is sustainable.
And, because of my experience and background, I understand the
challenges of business executives and salespeople so I can maximize their
results.

Interestingly, one of the top gurus who does the multi-day
events uses a very similar method when working with his one-on-one clients.  For this service, he reportedly charges up to
a million dollars per year and takes a profit share in their company.

Beyond that, my experience in working with people in churches and business has shown me that not knowing their Core Identity and living in roles is exacerbated by the stress they experience.  I have seen people change dramatically when the stress they’ve been under is released. In fact, the exercise I take people through to discover their Core Identity is always preceded by releasing of stress so the true person can come out.  Just imagine having stress you’ve carried around for years released so that you feel relaxed, comfortable, confident and allows you to become the real.  What would that be like?  None of the other methods mentioned above have the ability to do this.

If you would like to learn how you can discover the true
you, just email me at ed@trans-think.com and we’ll set a time to chat.  I’ll leave you with another important quote:

“The worst thing I can imagine is coming to the end of my life and realizing I had lived someone else’s dream.”  That “someone else” can very well be the mask you’ve been wearing for all those years.

How Women are Valued is Determined by Their Birthplace

When it comes to being treated equally, new research shows that it’s where both men and women are born that determines the outcome. In areas of the U.S. where “traditional” values are taught and displayed, both men’s and women’s belief systems show much more disparity than in other areas of the country.

The New York Times reports, “Perhaps most strikingly, the study finds that a woman’s lifelong earnings and how much she works are influenced by the levels of sexism in the state where she was born. A woman born in the Deep South is likely to face a much wider economic gender gap than a woman born on the Pacific Coast, the research shows, even if both women move to New York as adults.”

Of course, many will argue that this is because of men making up the majority of decision-making roles and that their value of women in business influences any ability for them to grow in organizations. This is definitely a factor.

However, there are also findings that suggests the beliefs a woman grows up with can shape her future behavior in a way that affects her career and salary. As with all people, women internalize the social norms they are taught and shown when they are young on issues like:

When to have childrenWhat types of jobs are appropriate for womenHow much society values the work of women

Another study, found that women born in more “sexist” regions marry and have their first child at a much younger age, that many women stay at home after their first child is born, and that women’s attitudes toward gender roles grow more traditional after a birth.

All of these traits influence a woman’s beliefs in the type of positions she should seek, bargaining for higher wages, and seeking promotions to leadership and executive level positions. What does this look like? Here are a few examples I’ve been told by many women:

Am I good enough to be in the “Boy’s Club” and sitting at the executive table?Because I’m a woman, I have to work several times harder to prove myselfBecause I’m a woman, I have to know all the answersI have to divest myself of my emotions so I can be more like the men in order to succeed

Since most life-long values are instilled at the unconscious level when we’re young and create “automatic” beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors, is there a way to transform those so that women can take their rightful place in the business world? Yes, there is!

Without getting deep into the Neuroscience on the topic, here’s how;

You’ve probably heard of Neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to grow, adapt, and change even well into your 80’s. Neuroscientists Dr. V.S. Ramachandran of San Diego University, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor of Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Joe Dispenza of the University of New Brunswick have all written and spoken to great lengths on the amazing abilities of the brain to change.

Once we reach the age of about 8-years-old, we develop a part of the brain that seals our beliefs, as if frozen in time. Up until that age, we believe we can be anything and do anything. And, if an authority figure tells us differently from what we currently believe, we can change our belief instantly to meet this new input.

After about 8-years-old, that all changes. We have to have “proof” to make any changes and, even then, we may disregard any “proof” in favor of keeping our current belief. We distort, delete, and generalize information to keep things the same.

So, how can we change long-standing beliefs that limit us from reaching our full potential? Keeping in line with the purpose of this article, how can women change beliefs on their role in the family and in the business world should they desire to pursue positions in male-dominated industries, roles that have traditionally held by men, or in receiving equal compensation?

The answer is; By bypassing the part of the brain that developed round 8-years-old and has locked in previously held beliefs and installing beliefs that align with their current desires for how they want their life to be. The result? Women will:

Feel very comfortable that the “Boy’s Club” has become the “Executive’s Club” and that they have every right to be thereThat their best they give is good enough, just like anyone elseThat they don’t have to know all the answers to prove themselves. Like anyone else, they just need to know how to find them.Owning who they are as a woman, with all the emotions that brings with it. Men have them, too. Don’t let them fool you with the whole, “Let’s think this through logically” B.S. I can show you the neuroscience on that, too.

Why Aren’t There More Women Asset Managers and Advisors?

Of the thousands of equity and fixed-income funds tracked by Morningstar, it found that less than 10% of U.S. managers were women. Yet, Morningstar’s data show that if women don’t follow the trends men tend to, investors will win. “During the past 15 years, actively managed fixed-income funds run by women outperformed the average returns of their respective sector category by 0.35 percent annually.” (Bloomberg article) How did male-only teams compare? They averaged .08%.

There are more stats to support women taking high-level positions in the Financial Services Industry, but what’s more important to understand is this; What is stopping women from advancing into these roles, especially on Wall Street?

In the Bloomberg article I quoted above, it gives us this picture:

It can take years to win a management role and many women don’t stay around because they don’t see a clear path to advancement
Strong, confident women who enter the business aren’t always welcomed
A shortfall of prospects entering the field
Insufficient college-recruitment initiatives and public role models

This is a huge mistake on the part of the industry. Why? Because, by 2020, 67% of private wealth in the U.S. will be controlled by women. Surveys show that these women want to do business with other women. And, here’s why:

One successful woman Financial Advisor speaking to other women says on her website, “You’re sick and tired of financial professionals “mansplaining” what you need to do, and feeling unheard, judged or criticized by the financial decisions you’ve made (or not made) in the past. You want someone to explain the complex financial world to you in a way that’s simple and relatable, as if you were talking to a girlfriend over lunch.” (Financially Wise Women)

Yet, less than 10% of U.S. managers are women and only about 10% of Financial Advisors are women. Based on my research, either the industry is going to have to accelerate the acknowledgement of women as leaders, or face full-on disruption from female investors insisting that they work with other women and get better, safer results women managers and advisors provide them. The companies that adopt this as a Best-Practice first will be the winners.

However, there is more to the story. Of the women I’ve researched (Investment News, Women to Watch) and of the ones I’ve either interviewed or have as clients, there are striking similar personal concerns that emerge.

Can I make it in the “Boy’s Club”? In the “Locker-room Atmosphere”?
I feel like I’ll always have to have all the answers to be credible
Am I smart enough?
Will I have to give up who I am and be more “man-like” to succeed?
And, more…

What I see as an exciting trend is that the women who have succeeded in the Financial Services Industry are stretching out a helping hand to new and less-experienced women. Some run full-fledged classes on how to build seven-figure brokerages. Others offer technology solutions unavailable elsewhere. Others offer themselves as mentors. Along with these are organizations, like “Girls Who Invest“, “Clarity 2 Prosperity” and Envestnet.

Beyond what all the others offer, I use the latest in Neuroscience with my clients to perform Neuropathological Remodeling. Imagine being able to facilitate the removal of all the limiting beliefs, fears, doubts, and worries that most women in the industry say they experience. Those I’ve interacted with say it took them years of accomplishments to overcome those, with some still occasionally lingering. Suppose those could be gone in a matter of hours and replaced with absolute confidence, assertiveness, and inner courage?

This is a game-changer for any individual or organization.

If Steve Jobs had Lived in the Early 1900’s

The name “Steve Jobs” is synonymous with creation, invention, innovation, excellence and creating wealth.  Because of his success, we tend to forget his failures.  Here are five that were listed by Harvard Business Review:

Hiring John Sculley as CEO
Believing Pixar would be a great hardware company
Not knowing the right market for NeXT computers
Launching numerous product failures
Trying to sell Pixar many times

Had Jobs lived in the early 1900’s he would have had a competitor for the most failures in Thomas Edison.  The official quote from The Smithsonian that’s attributed to Edison is, “I have not failed 10,000 times—I’ve successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.”

People read the success stories of Jobs, Edison, Cher Wang, and others with the intent to be inspired, only to miss an important part of their success…their failures that created learning opportunities that led to their success.

Beyond their failures are their belief systems that caused them to continue on to their successes.

According to Leonard DeGraaf, an archivist at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, chances are you haven’t heard of Edison’s botched ideas because he refused to dwell on them. DeGraaf says, “Edison’s not a guy that looks back. Even for his biggest failures he didn’t spend a lot of time wringing his hands and saying ‘Oh my God, we spent a fortune on that.’ Instead, he said, ‘we had fun spending it.’”

And, Jobs?  Here’s what he said in a commencement speech at Stanford University about being fired from his own company: “I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”

And what about Cher Wang?  On her way to becoming almost three times more wealthy than Oprah Winfrey, Wang suffered several crushing blows.  The belief system behind her forging on?  Her mantra is “Quietly brilliant”.  She learned from each experience and used that knowledge and wisdom to move forward toward the larger goal.

What I hope you take away

Success feels good.  The chemicals that are released into the body are the “feel good” neurotransmitters and hormones.  These are released by the brain through the beliefs that are already held and the thoughts that are generated from those beliefs.

Rather than getting hyped for a few minutes by reading inspirational sayings and of the successes of others, how would it feel to take on their belief systems and thoughts?  Just suppose you could replace your current beliefs about failure, along with the accompanying thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, with those of Edison, Jobs, Wang, or someone else of your choosing.  How would that change your life?

You’ve probably heard of Neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and grow.  Neuroscience is showing us more and more how pliable and changeable our thinking processes are.  You have the ability to take on the beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors of those you would like to model.  And I can help you do that.
