Julie Ann Dawson is an author, editor, publisher, RPG designer, and advocate for writers who may occasionally require the services of someone with access to Force Lightning (and in case it was not obvious, a bit of a geek).

Her work has appeared in a variety of print and digital media, including such diverse publications as the New Jersey Review of Literature, Lucidity, Black Bough, Poetry Magazine, Gareth Blackmore’s Unusual Tales, Demonground, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and others.

In 2002, she started her own publishing company, Bards and Sages. The company has gone from having two titles to over a one hundred titles between their print and digital products.

In 2009, she launched the Bards and Sages Quarterly, a literary journal of speculat

You can't rush a story or make it come faster than it wants to. Trying to force a story to manifest before it is ready is sort of like trying to make a cake bake faster by simply turning the temperature up 100 degrees on the oven. All you end up doing is burning the cake.

The best thing for me when I am stuck on a story plot point or I'm not sure where to go is to get away from it. Go play a video game. Go for a walk. Jump on the exercise bike. Go to a movie. Read a book. Work on a different project. Sometimes you just need to let a story "simmer" on the back burner for a while so all of the ingredients can mesh together. (less)

What works for a romance author, for example, may not work for a sci-fi author. What works for someone writing 800-page epic fantasy may not apply to a person writing novellas. And what worked for a previously trade published author who is republishing her former bestsellers may not necessarily apply to a first-time author.

Develop a healthy skepticism. Look at what is being said to you and see if it actually applies to your situation. There is no quick and easy path to success. There is no magic bullet to a bestseller. So whenever you get advice about your writing career, don't just jump on it before examining what was said and how it applies to you. (less)

“I've always said "Writer's Block" is a myth. There is no such thing as writer's block, only writers trying to force something that isn't ready yet. Sometimes I don't write for weeks. And then all of the sudden I'll get a rush of inspiration and you can't drag me away from my notebook. But I don't stress out if I don't hit some arbitrary word count each day or if I go a few days without writing something.”

“I don’t think male gamers are more or less sexist than non-gamers. Sexism is unfortunately still a large problem in our culture overall. It is not unique to gaming. Have a pretty girl walk by a construction site in a mini-skirt and you’ll see that. For anyone to imply that male gamers are somehow inherently more sexist than the rest of society smacks of insincerity or naiveté.”
Julie Ann Dawson

“Stop thinking “Outside the box” and look what is actually in the box first. You jump around from marketing gimmick to marketing gimmick without a clear plan or goal, hoping to reproduce someone else’s success without understanding all of the nuances and factors that went into that success. Further, people are so busy recreating the wheel that they have forgotten what the wheel looks like.”
Julie Ann Dawson

“Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.”
Narcotics Anonymous

“Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge.”
Horace Mann

“No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”
George Lucas, The Star Wars Trilogy

“Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It’s beyond me.”
Zora Neale Hurston

“I tell my students, 'When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.”
Toni Morrison
