Title & Cover Reveal + Release Date for ANr Book 2
Asterion Noir is due for another book, don’t you think? I think so. OF A DARKER VOID (Asterion Noir Book 2) will be released in ebook and paperback DECEMBER 3RD!
***
When man and machine are one and the same, death is no longer an inevitability.
But in the darkest reaches of space, neither is life.
Diplomat.
Rebel.
Fugitive.
Nika Tescarav has lived many lives, though she no longer remembers most of them. Chased by agents of a regime that will do anything to protect the secrets of the Rasu Protocol, Nika flees to the stars with her once and future lover on a mission to expose those secrets. A race across alien worlds both exotic and deadly leads them to the bastion of the enemy, but its discovery brings a terrible revelation: sometimes the truth is indeed worse than the lies spun to conceal it.
With Nika and Dashiel on the run, NOIR steps up to defend against a virulent pathogen unleashed upon innocent civilians. When a desperate government moves to crush the resistance once and for all, unlikely alliances are forged between former adversaries and all paths converge in an explosive showdown that will change the future of the Asterion Dominion forever.
ASTERION NOIR
700,000 years ago, the Asterions fled persecution for their pro-synthetic beliefs. In the safe harbor of a distant galaxy, they have evolved into a true biosynthetic race and built a thriving society upon the pillars of personal autonomy, mutual respect and boundless innovation.
Now that society is fracturing at the seams. Beneath lies built upon lies, the shocking truth as to why threatens the future of not merely the Asterions, but all life in the universe.
Cyberpunk and space opera collide in a thrilling new trilogy from the author of the epic Aurora Rhapsody space opera saga. Enter a world of technological wonders, exotic alien life, enthralling characters, captivating worlds—and a terrifying evil lurking in the void that will shatter it all.

More space. More cyberpunk. More Nika. More NOIR, hacking, aliens and explosions. More secrets and revelations. They will all be coming your way in a few short weeks.
I’ll be sharing further details, including retailers and spoiler-free teaser quotes, soon. Audiobook listeners, never fear - Pyper Down plans to start recording as soon as the final manuscript is ready, so expect the audiobook in very early 2019 :). OF A DARKER VOID already has a Goodreads page, so you can add it to your “Want To Read” shelf today.
For those of you who are still working your way through Aurora Rhapsody: first, fantastic! Second, you don’t need to finish Aurora Rhapsody to hop over to Asterion Noir, though there are some minor links between it and the final trilogy, Aurora Resonant. For an overview of Asterion Noir and how it relates to Aurora Rhapsody, check out this blog post: Introducing Asterion Noir. You can pick up Asterion Noir Book 1, EXIN EX MACHINA, in ebook or paperback at all major online retailers worldwide and in audiobook on Audible, Amazon and iTunes.
Thank you all for your patience and your support, as always.

Choose the Name of Nika’s Ship
If you’ve read Exin Ex Machina, you know that near the end of the book, Nika gets herself a lovely starship. If you’ve read Aurora Rhapsody, you know that in my books, ships tend to take on a personality (and sometimes a life) of their own. Ships are characters in their own right, and they deserve proper, meaningful names.
So here’s your chance to contribute to Asterion Noir in a cool way. As you’d expect, Nika and Dashiel will be spending some time on the new ship in Book 2. Like I did, they’ll decide it needs a name - and what they choose is up to you. All the options have personal meaning for Nika (whether historical or psychological), so we’ve got that prerequisite covered. Your options are:
KIR (Nika's Artificial during the SAI Rebellion that became part of her core psyche)
Nova (NOir Vertsatile Adjunct /a star that suddenly becomes thousands of times brighter)
Riven (to be torn or split asunder)
Wayfarer (traveler, or one on a journey)
The poll will close in one week (Tuesday, October 2nd at noon EST). Click the button below to vote - and don’t forget to click “submit” after you choose!
VOTE!

As promised, a dark Asterion Noir shirt style (t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, sweatshirts, etc.) is now available in the Zazzle store. Check it out and lots more Aurora Rhapsody and Asterion Noir gear here.

Next time: Cover and title reveal for Book 2! And a release date? Stay tuned….

When man and machine are one and the same, there are many crimes but only one sin: psyche-wipe. The secrets it has buried could lead to a civilization's salvation, or to its doom.
The Asterion Dominion is at peace with its neighbors and itself. Its citizens enjoy great freedoms and all the luxuries their biosynthetic minds can imagine, design and create. But beneath the idyllic veneer, something is going wrong. People are going wrong, driven to commit inexplicable crimes without motive or purpose. And once imprisoned for those crimes, they simply vanish.
Psyche-wiped and dumped in an alley 5 years ago, awakened into a culture where ancestral memories stretch back for millennia, Nika Tescarav's past is a blank canvas. But if whoever erased her did so in the hope of silencing her, they should have tried harder.
Someone must speak for the lost. Someone must uncover how and why they became lost. Someone must find the lost.
Nika is that someone.

Beyond the Stars: Unimagined Realms - With a New AR Short Story
Who misses Alex and Caleb? It's okay, you don't have to raise your hands - I can guess the answer. Well, today I have a treat for you. A small, bite-sized short story treat, but a treat nonetheless.
Available today and for only $0.99 is the latest volume of the bestselling Beyond the Stars anthology, titled UNIMAGINED REALMS. It includes "Fractals," a brand-new short story set in the Aurora Rhapsody universe, but outside the primary timeline of the series. The official teaser reads like this:
"A mysterious signal coming from deep space attracts the attention of humanity’s scientists and the soldiers who protect them—the kind of attention the originators of the signal will do anything to avoid. When the two converge, first contact doesn’t go the way either side planned."
A mysterious signal coming from deep space? If that sounds familiar, you're not wrong. But here's the real hook for Aurora Rhapsody veterans: What if the 1st Crux War had never happened? How would that have changed the trajectories of Alex and Caleb's lives in the years leading up to the events of Aurora Rhapsody? Who or what could change history in this way, and why?
In Fractals, see Alex and Caleb in action again, but not exactly as you remember them - yet in some ways, exactly as you remember them ;). Is the story Aurora Rhapsody canon? For now, I'll just say this: I'm reminded of a quote from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
I should probably mention that Unimagined Realms also includes 11 imaginative stories by top-notch indie sci-fi writers David Bruns, T.R. Cameron, Marion Deeds, Patrice Fitzgerald, Joseph Robert Lewis, J.E. Mac, Craig Martelle, Sean Monaghan, Chelsea Pagan, R.A. Rock and Mark Sarney. And I should definitely mention that the $0.99 release price will only last through August 31st, so grab it from any of these retailers for pennies today, while you still can:

Epic Rhapsody Sale, Blogging & ANR Updates
An advantage of having a completed series is that I can (1) wrap it all up in a couple of collections and (2) put those collections on sale to woo new readers and convince them to dive in, big time :).

Like the graphic says, from now through Monday readers can pick up the entire Aurora Rhapsody saga for under $12 (or foreign currency equivalent, because this is a worldwide sale). The ebooks are available and on sale at all major retailers - Amazon, iTunes, Nook, Kobo, Google Play - and many smaller ones. Tell your friends!
What else is going on?
I have a new blog post today: Cross-Country Journeys, Chicken Scratch & Bossy Characters . Give it a read to find out how a notebook buried in a stack of other notebooks led to a stroll down a nostalgia lane named Aurora Rhapsody, and the things that almost were. The Exin Ex Machina (Asterion Noir Book 1) ebook will leave Kindle Unlimited and be available on all major retailers in very early September - so not long now. You'll hear from me again when it's up everywhere!Have you read Exin Ex Machina? Sharing your thoughts in a review - even just a sentence or two - is a great way to boost the book's visibility, bring in new readers and increase its success. Much appreciated :). Amazon / GoodreadsThe first draft of Asterion Noir Book 2 is done, and I'm well into draft #2 - which basically means it's still on track for a release late this year. Title and cover reveals are coming...soonish.The Zazzle store has gotten a much-needed revamp: all the previous designs have been updated from "Aurora Rising" to "Aurora Rhapsody," and I've added a selection of Asterion Noir gear and t-shirts.

Cross-Country Journeys, Chicken Scratch & Bossy Characters
The other day I was cleaning out my notebook collection (which is shockingly extensive, considering I use a PC/tablet/phone for nearly everything). In checking the contents of each notebook before sorting it into the “keep” or “toss” pile, I was surprised to discover pages and pages of handwritten notes in one innocuous looking little notebook. It took me a moment to realize that this was the notebook I took on our cross-country drive from Colorado to Georgia in 2014 for Thanksgiving.*
The drive where Aurora Renegades and Aurora Resonant came to life.
November 2014 places this drive two months after Vertigo was released, which means I was heavy into writing Transcendence. I’d had the broad brush-strokes of the full 9-book saga in place from the very beginning (yes, including the ending!), but up until this point I’d forced myself to focus on Aurora Rising—because if Rising wasn’t a success, there would likely be no 2nd and 3rd trilogies. But by November, Starshine had taken off and Vertigo was doing very well; I was collecting an enthusiastic fan base, and I had started to accept the notion that this writing gig was something I could do. As in, forever.
So it was time to get serious about the rest of the story.
In reading back through my notes (when I could decipher them—my handwriting is chicken scratch in the best of circumstances, and these were written in a moving car), the biggest thing that struck me was how little changed from initial brainstorming to the released books. But talking about what stayed the same is BORING, so instead I’m going to talk about what changed, along with a few tangents inspired by this stroll down nostalgia lane.

Prevo Virus

One of the biggest changes, plot-wise, relates to the virus that Olivia’s Artificial unleashes on the Prevos in Relativity. Initially, rather than put the Prevo into a coma or kill them, the virus was going to alter their personality in pernicious ways (in this respect, not unlike the virutox in Exin Ex Machina). Mia would have been infected (among others), leading her down a dark and ultimately tragic path.
But Mia wasn’t interested in getting taken out a second time. She kept muttering something about ‘agency’ and ‘Hell, no,’ and eventually I had no choice but to listen to her. I’m glad I did, as it meant she was able to go on and play a crucial role in curing that very virus, as well as a wonderful role in the final two books.
Anaden IntegralsAnother major change that was more subtle but also more far-reaching was the nature of the Anaden integrals. Initially, they were going to be much stronger and more invasive, bringing the Anaden Dynasties closer to either a hive mind or, more likely, a master/slave or queen/worker structure. But such a structure would have severely limited the possibilities for rebellion from within—and can you imagine Resonant without the anarchs? Without EREN?? Right.

Love At First Coma

When I wrote Transcendence, I never intended Mia and Malcolm to later become romantically involved. I mean, who would matchmake those two? I only threw them together in Transcendence because I thought they would clash, which is great for dramatic tension. I knew I was in trouble, though, from the moment they met in that bunker on Romane, when the sparks practically flew off the pages. And nearly set the pages on fire in their single meeting in Sidespace. Still, I resisted well into writing Dissonance. But some things are meant to be. Apparently. I continued to throw obstacle after obstacle at them right up until the end, all of which they batted away like pros.
We Interrupt This Regularly Scheduled....An aside, since we’re talking about Mia: A lot of readers are commenting on how much Nika and Alex have in common. It’s true, they do share a number of characteristics, especially the hero-esque ones. But I would argue that, if you set aside Nika’s combat capabilities, the Rhapsody character she’s most like is Mia. … ... But that’s another blog post ;).
2nd aside, since now we’re talking about Nika: Nika and Erin are actually two divergent evolutions of a single character concept I had for the protagonist of a stand-alone novel. That hypothetical novel has been chopped up and many of its best ideas used in Asterion Noir, but I think it’s neat that the soul of the character who could've been lives on in two of my favorite characters. Also, I can’t promise that the novel’s concept won’t pop up as a short story one day.
Justice, Vengeance & The Squiggly Line In BetweenThe question of who was going to execute Jude Winslow in Abysm was up in the air for a long time. Many of the major characters face character-defining moments in Abysm, and this action definitely would have qualified. So who did the deed was important, and also complicated.
Why not Devon? Because his conversation with Jude (in which Devon consciously chooses not to kill Jude) showed far more powerful and compelling character growth than him taking revenge would have. Why not Alex? Because she'd already crashed into the bottom of the chasm, faced her moment of truth and turned away from the darkness, into the light. I did consider having Jude die in her strike on the OTS hideout, but that would have robbed his death of the impact it deserved.
Why not Mia? This was a little tougher, honestly. Her later arguments with Malcolm on the subject show that she recognized the need for his death. But as a public figure and leader now, she was also trying to live by society's rules, and to defy them with malice aforethought would feel to her like a slide back toward the past she'd escaped. Why not Malcolm? To have Malcolm kill Jude in cold blood would be a betrayal of his character, clearly. So, like with Alex, this would have of necessity changed the circumstances of Jude's death and thus minimized it.
Why Caleb, then? Because Caleb has always done the hard things, the dark things, that need doing. But I'll let him explain it:
“The system is only as good as its leaders. And when they fail—when the system fails—you better damn well hope I’m there to pick up the slack.”
Jenner continued to glower, but it lost some of its fervor. “No one appointed you humanity’s protector.”
“No one had to—and if you don’t understand why that is, then you’re not nearly the man I was told you are.”

Tidbits, Gems & Wadded Paper on the FloorAn aquatic species initially slated to appear in Renegades eventually became the Galenai in Resonant. For the first several months, the Anadens were referred to as “Human Primes” in my notes and my head. I knew they’d need a proper name, of course, but in the early days it worked well as a short-hand that captured their nature rather well.

And Aver ela-Praesidis, the Inquisitor who discovers the Aurora Enisle and bites the dust in a showdown with Caleb in Abysm, was referred to in our house as “Mirror Caleb,” complete with a metaphorical goatee. (For the non-Trekkies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_Universe)The Ruda were originally crystalline rather than metal, but the image of their world I had in my head was much more powerful when painted in hard metals instead of sparkly crystals. The Taenarins’ underground world was inspired in part by Below the Root , one of my husband’s favorite video games from his childhood, which is based on the Green Sky Trilogy books by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (who also co-wrote the video game).

David Solovy initially came back wrong.
KIDDING!!! That resurrection was 8 books in the making, and I'll be damned if I was going to screw it up. My husband likes to say that my greatest trick in the series was having the main character be dead until the last book. I won't go quite that far, because Alex and Caleb's strength and heroism should never be discounted. But there's no question that David Solovy was the whisper between every line; the shadow in the negative space; the spirit giving Alex, Miriam and Richard the fortitude to push ahead when their worlds were darkest. And for all that, when he finally arrived, it turned out he was just a man. A damn good man.

So about the chicken scratch. It's not just my writing - it's my drawing, too. THIS is why almost all my notes, outlines, flow charts, etc. are digital. Of course, my husband thinks my drawings are "cute." He tapes them to the refrigerator. (In fairness, we don't have kids, so something's got to go on it, right?) He's currently trying to tape the notebook that spurred this blog post to the fridge - the whole thing. I'm trying to intervene.
But, I have to admit, it was very cool randomly coming across this piece of written, physical Aurora Rhapsody history and being able to flip through the pages and smile. Then take pictures and share it with you all :).
***
*PSA: Don't. Sure, the first 6 hours or so were fun - seeing the countryside, feet on the dash, creating far-off worlds and aliens and committing them to paper. But then there was another day and half of driving left. With two cranky dogs (and one non-cranky husband; he loved the whole journey). In subsequent years, it's been a pet sitter and airplanes all the way!

EXIN EX MACHINA Is Here

EXIN EX MACHINA, the first book in the new sci-fi trilogy Asterion Noir, is now available in ebook and paperback! Through this weekend, the ebook has a special release price of $0.99, so grab it before the price goes up :). Then take it to the beach, the lake, the park, your kid's ball game or just out on your back porch, and escape to another universe.
The Exin Ex Machina ebook will be available exclusively on Amazon (and borrowable in Kindle Unlimited) for the first 90 days. After that, my intention is to make it available on all ebook retailers - and I'll of course let you know when I do. The paperback is available only on Amazon today, but it will be added to more retailers in the coming days. Also, Pyper Down has already begun recording the audiobook; it should be available next month.
New subscribers who are still working your way through the Aurora Rhapsody novels, you don't need to have finished Rhapsody to read Exin Ex Machina. While there are some historical connections between the setting of Asterion Noir and Aurora Resonant (the final Rhapsody trilogy) that long-time readers will appreciate, you won't suffer for not being familiar with that background - so feel free to take a break and hop over to this new world :).
Once you've devoured Exin Ex Machina, spread the word! Reviews are the greatest gift you can give, but posts on Twitter, Facebook or other social media sites, your own blogs, and forums are also most welcome. Here's the book's Goodreads page, too. If the book moves you, tell others about it. This is a new series, and the first entry has to earn its credibility just like Starshine did. You all are a huge part of making that happen.
As ever, thank you for all your overwhelming support. Thank you for coming along with me, with Alex, and now with Nika on these many wondrous journeys :).
