Book Review: "Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God: The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution"

Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution by Daniel S. Stackhouse, Jr. Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God: The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution
According to the Pledge of Allegiance, we are “one nation, under God.” But what does this exactly mean? In Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God, Daniel S. Stackhouse, Jr. answers this and many other questions about Christianity’s role in the American Revolution and in the shaping of America as it is today.

What we learn in our history classes about the American Revolution is only a small portion of what influenced the colonies to break away from Britain, as is illustrated in this brilliant historical analysis written by Stackhouse. Many believe that the colonists sought out a separation of church and state, and that they intended the United States of America to be completely secular. However, as Stackhouse points out, the grounds for revolution in America (though secular in some respects) were mostly religious in nature and revolved around an awakening of religious freedom.

In this interesting perspective on our nation’s history, Stackhouse reminds us of what we tend to forget about how this country came to be. He moves through the Great Awakening in early America and how the religious sermons delivered came to analyze the nature of politics in Britain and within the colonies. Stackhouse develops a compelling narrative through his deep understanding of the speeches and sermons delivered by some of this country’s greatest preachers and politicians, illustrating how the colonists’ devotion to God triggered their break away from British politics.

It is difficult to come away from this book without appreciating to some degree that Christianity is at the backbone of America. Stackhouse uses historical fact to solidify his argument that religion helped shape the United States, and was partially responsible for the American Revolution. A well-thought-out analysis and compelling argument for what shaped present day America and what role Christianity played in the American Revolution, Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God is a great work of historical exploration and sheds light on the many areas of our nation’s history that often go overlooked." - River of Reads

FIVE STARS!!!

Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution by Daniel S. Stackhouse, Jr. Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God: The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution"This is a very interesting book for many reasons. First, it is compiled in an orderly and logical way that makes it easy reading even for one not used to perusing scholarly works, such as myself. Secondly, it contains many quotes to increase the understanding of what was going on in the minds of the Founders of the Constitution. Third, it isn't argumentative, simply states the facts and allows the reader to see the outcome. As he says, there has always been an argument between those who believe the Constitution was written in order to establish a Christian country, and those who believe that the very fact that the United States is not a country with an established religion proves the others to be wrong. As the author concludes, many of the Founders were very religious men, but not all of them were, and that fact may have affected their personal feelings about how the Constitution should be written, but it didn't affect the document itself. Both sides recognized something they called Natural Law, which derived from the creation they could observe and experience around them, and that Natural Law had more effect on the writing of the Constitution
than their actual religion."

Another Five Star Review on Amazon!

Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution by Daniel S. Stackhouse, Jr. Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God: The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution Never has a book been so well documented and written while challenged with the level of research and proof that the American foundation of Social Democracy and the founding of our great country was dictated from Christianity, “Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God: The Role of Christianity in the American Revolution” by Daniel S. Stackhouse, Jr. Many have speculated that our foundational governing policy was predicated upon entirely Christian principles or it was an altogether spiritual formation, yet what the reader will discover is true to form balance and representation of the revolutionary history of these United States. Historically sound and opinion based upon the facts.

Five Star Review on Amazon

"In the stew that is the history of the American Revolution, ‘Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God’ is a superb main ingredient. Eschewing the popular political correctness or revisionist historical rewriting, Stackhouse lays out a well-researched and accurate picture of how Christianity played a key foundational role in the American Revolution and in the formation of the republic. This is a significant work that takes a solid position against those who argue outlying positions that America was either a wholly secular creation, or that America was always governed by Christian precepts. Required reading for anyone who wants an accurate and balanced view of American Revolution history. I look forward to a significantly expanded future work. First rate bibliography."
