Episode 85 | Glenn Cooper Interview
International best seller Glenn Cooper joins me this week. Glenn is a true hybrid author that self publishes in the U.S. while traditionally publishing in Europe and around the world.
Glenn Cooper is an internationally bestselling thriller writer. His books have been translated into 31 languages and have sold over 6 million copies. To date Cooper has written seven novels all of which have become top-ten international bestsellers.
His Library of the Dead trilogy, is currently being adapted as a TV series by Pioneer Pictures.
Cooper’s novels are suspenseful intellectual, conspiratorial thrillers characterized by multiple interlacing time shifts which are often rooted in real historical events. In addition each of his books spotlights a large philosophical theme: fate and predestination, the nature of evil, conceptions of the afterlife, resurrection, and the interface between science and faith.
Cooper graduated from Harvard University, Magna Cum Laude, with a B.A. in Archeology. He attended Tufts University School of Medicine then practiced internal medicine and infectious diseases in hospitals, clinics, and refugee camps in conflict zones before joining the biotechnology industry where he was the CEO of several publicly traded companies. He is currently the chairman of Lascaux Media, a diversified media company which produces thrillers and horror films.
PRIASE:
“Glenn Cooper’s a startling new talent. A seamless blend of modern-day thriller and historical mystery with an ending that left me breathless… not to be missed.”
James Rollins, Bestselling Author
“The Tenth Chamber shows that Cooper is one of the best new writers of conspiracy thrillers.”
David Knights, Keighley News, UK
“As Cooper builds the layers of intrigue it becomes clear that he is no ordinary thriller writer, but one who asks big questions.”
Sunday Telegraph (UK)
“Glenn Cooper has written one of the best-designed novels that I have read in 14 years.”
Antonio D’ Orrico, Corriere della Sera Magazine

Episode 83 | R.D. Brady
R.D. Brady is my guest this week. R.D. is the author of the Belial Series. R.D. has a fascinating story of self publishing success.
R.D. Brady has been a criminologist for almost two decades. Her books reflect this deep understanding of criminal behavior. And while motivation is fun, according to R.D., there is nothing more fun to write than an action sequence.
Drawing on her years of studying Jeet Kune Do, her books are chockfull of one explosive fight scene after the next. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. She writes the books she would want to read and the more action, the better.
To learn about her upcoming publications, sign up for her newsletter (desperateforagoodbook.com) or send her an email (rdbradywriter@gmail.com). She’d love to hear from you.
And if you have a little time, swing by her blog to see what she’s reading.
The Belial Series in Order:
1. The Belial Stone
2. The Belial Library
3. The Belial Ring
4. Recruit: A Belial Series Novella
5. The Belial Children
6. The Belial Origins
7. The Belial Search
8. The Belial Guard (coming Summer 2016)
9. The Belial Warrior (coming Fall 2016)

Episode 81 | Diana Gabaldon Interview
This week I have an interview with Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series. Last year Outlander debuted as a very popular television series on the Starz network also.
Diana Gabaldon is the author of the award-winning, #1 NYT-bestselling OUTLANDER novels, described by Salon magazine as “the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting “Scrooge McDuck” comics.”
The adventure began in 1991 with the classic OUTLANDER (“historical fiction with a Moebius twist”), has continued through seven more New York Times-bestselling novels— DRAGONFLY IN AMBER, VOYAGER, DRUMS OF AUTUMN, THE FIERY CROSS, A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES, AN ECHO IN THE BONE, and WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD, with more than twenty-six million copies in print worldwide. Click to read a chronology of the Outlander series.
The series is published in 26 countries and 23 languages, and includes a nonfiction (well, relatively) companion volume, THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION, which provides details on the settings, background, characters, research, and writing of the first novels in the series. Gabaldon (it’s pronounced “GAA-bull-dohn”—rhymes with “stone”) has also written several books in a sub-series featuring Lord John Grey (a major minor character from the main series): LORD JOHN AND THE PRIVATE MATTER, LORD JOHN AND THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADE, LORD JOHN AND THE HAND OF DEVILS, and LORD JOHN AND THE SCOTTISH PRISONER.
Returning to her comic-book roots, she has also written a graphic novel titled THE EXILE (set within the OUTLANDER universe and featuring the main characters from OUTLANDER), but told from the viewpoint of Jamie Fraser and his godfather, Murtagh. The graphic novel is illustrated by Hoang Nguyen, and published by Del-Rey.
The eighth and most recent major novel in the OUTLANDER series, WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD, was released on June 10, 2014 in the U.S.A. and Canada. The book made its debut as number one on the New York Times bestseller list in the hardcover category and combined e-book and hardcover category! And the book is also a bestseller in Canada.
Diana’s current writing projects include the ninth major novel in the OUTLANDER series, as yet untitled, and a second volume of THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION. She is also serving as a Co-Producer and advisor for the Outlander TV series produced by the Starz network and Tall Ship Productions, which is based on her novels.
Dr. Gabaldon holds three degrees in science: Zoology, Marine Biology, and a Ph.D. in Quantitative Behavioral Ecology, (plus an honorary degree as Doctor of Humane Letters, which entitles her to be “Diana Gabaldon, Ph.D., D.H.L.” She supposes this is better than “Diana Gabaldon, Phd.X,”) and spent a dozen years as a university professor with an expertise in scientific computation before beginning to write fiction. She has written scientific articles and textbooks, worked as a contributing editor on the MacMillan ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COMPUTERS, founded the scientific-computation journal SCIENCE SOFTWARE QUARTERLY, and has written numerous comic-book scripts for Walt Disney. None of this has anything whatever to do with her novels, but there it is.
Diana and her husband, Douglas Watkins, have three adult children and live mostly in Scottsdale, Arizona.

A Writer's Superpower
Over the last couple of years, I’ve gotten to do some pretty cool things. I’ve published three novels, three episodes of a new serial series called Writer’s Block, written short stories for a few anthologies, and hosted a podcast that consistently blows my mind. I hope it gives you the same kind of feeling.
The podcast has been an especially gratifying experience. Through it I’ve made some really great friends, gleaned priceless advice from other writers that are a lot farther in their careers than I am, and opened my mind to new possibilities. Hugh Howey even mentioned it on his blog yesterday. And to top all that off, the audience has grown exponentially since I started it.
I can attribute all of the successes I’ve had to one thing more than any other. Persistence. I don’t give up easily. I believe that the harder you work, and the more consistently you pursue something, the luckier you get.
Find something that makes you happy, and if you can find a way to benefit others with that talent, then you’re on to something. Then do it. Then keep doing it. There will be plenty of days that it seems like no one is listening or seeing all of the hard work that you’re putting in with no return. Don’t worry about it. When others will give up, keep working. Eventually you will look around and notice that there’s a whole group of people that have benefited from what you’ve been laboring alone at. Then welcome them in and keep going.
In over 80 interviews on Author Stories, the one theme that is repeated is that successful people don’t give up. They just don’t. And why would they? It’s our superpower.
