Oswego Literary Festival

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to a new edition of jymsnews! First things first! Progress on "The Doors Examined" book. I'm over halfway finished with the book! Just over halfway, still a lot of writing to do, but the articles are turning out very nicely, I think they'll be very good in the book! I've also decided to write new articles, sort of like bonus tracks, that will look at some lesser known occurences in Jim Morrison's life. More news as it breaks!

Next Saturday I'll be at the Oswego (IL) Literary Festival from 9AM-4PM, I'll be selling my book "The Last Stage" and endorsing them. I'll also be giving a presentation at 11AM titled "How to Get Published in the 21st Century" Hope you can all be there! The festival is at the Oswego Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill, Oswego, IL, 60543.

Until next time! Have a great weekend!

How to Know When it's Finished

Last night at the writers workshop I moderate I talked about how to know when something you're working on is finished I came up with a few guidelines that help me decide when something I'm writing is finished.

1) Know where your story ends. Know where you want to go with the plot and the characters, and where they will all end up.

2) Know what you want to accomplish in your work. Whether you're working on a sentence, paragraph, or chapter keep in mind what you want to accomplish in that section. Are you building the character? Setting the tone? Giving a backstory? Keep that goal in mind while writing.

3) When you change a scene, a sentence or a word and your changes are interchangeable and don't affect the meaning or advance the story in any way.

4) The opposite of number 3. When you do change things around and its having a detrimental effect on the sentence, paragraph, chapter or book and what you're trying to accomplish in your work.

5) If you're unsure if something is bad or good, put it away for a day or two, some distance and a bit of a perspective may be able to give you a better idea how the piece is working either for better or worse.

6) Write for yourself- If you have a sense of satisfaction about what you've written. When you're finished if you say to yourself "yeah, that's good, that's what I had in mind, that's what I meant to say."

Have a great day!
Jim

Writers Workshop 3/15/12

The Writers Workshop at the Oswego library is tomorrow (3/15) at 7PM, if you're local I hope you can join us! I'll be talking a bit about "Knowing When You're Finished" I've made some good notes and I think it'll be very interesting, and of course participants are encouraged to bring their own works and read. Last months was very successful, we had a diverse amount of participants with a diverse selection of their work! Looking forward to seeing you all there!

If you haven't had a chance to see my blurb in the Motion Device video you can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNMa0J... my blurb is at about the 1:34 min mark.

Both branches of the Oswego Public Library have copies of The Last Stage so if you would like to check it out http://www.oswego.lib.il.us

If you haven't checked out The Doors Examiner articles lately, I've had a couple good ones. An interview with Michael C. Ford, and the Influence of Jack Kerouac on Jim Morrison. www.examiner.com/the-doors-in-nationa...

Hope to see you all there tomorrow!

Thank you for reading The Doors Examiner!

Freaky Serial Killer Dream

Here's part of a freaky dream I had about a serial killer the other night. It actually comes out as a nice tone piece.

I could hear footfalls on the wet concrete, they were mine, but they weren’t mine, there were two sets! I looked behind me there was no one, only the darkness. I started walking faster, I was being followed, but I could outrun anyone at this distance. The stone apartment building loomed in front of me glistening darkly in the rain, I ran into the stone tunnel, the sound of my gym shoes splashing in the puddles, I could hear the other set of footfalls echoing in the tunnel, I ran faster, I came out into the courtyard, there were some bushes, I threw myself into them, I heard the snap of a branch, the wet loamy smell around me, and the piney smell of the bushes, “at least he can’t sneak up behind me” I thought.
