I live in Northern Virginia with my football-crazed husband, two beautiful daughters, and two psychotic Shih Tzus. I teach courses in international relations, peacekeeping, and human security at the American Military University. I also work as a reading tutor at my daughters’ elementary school. What can I say? I still love school.

Reading has long been my passion, so I belong to not one but two book clubs, which I fondly refer to as my “good girl bookclub” and my “bad girl bookclub.” Suffice it to say the “bad girl bookclub” is the one that decided to read Fifty Shades of Gray.

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. In my childhood, I loved writing poetry, song lyrics, and short stories. Somehow, this morphed into supreme court bri

Sometimes my brain doesn't want to be dress shopping for a wedding dress. Sometimes, my brain's just jonsing for a bar fight. So, I write the scene for the bar fight and save the dress shopping scene for another day. For this reason, my books aren't always written in chronological order. Often, the last chapter is written, long before the middle of the book. (less)

I get drawn further and further into the story, until suddenly, I'm completely submerged, lost in a different world, and completely oblivious to anything else that might be going on around me. I love losing myself in the story.(less)

Weathering this storm

I know it has been a while, a long while, since I’ve written a blog post. Between growing concerns for our nation and for several family members who are battling life-threatening medical conditions, I’ve struggled with what to post here. My last few posts have highlighted ways we can support one another, strengthen our communities, […]

“It is through that brokenness that we find courage and strength. It is what empowers us to do great things.”
K.S. Ruff, In a Broken Dream

“I followed him into the kitchen but stopped abruptly. Kadyn was cooking bacon in loose fitting sweats and a ribbed tank top that fit snugly across his chest. His biceps flexed when he flipped the bacon. Holy Mary, mother of God. It should be a crime for that man to stand in front of a stove.”
K.S. Ruff, The Broken Road

“Tears pricked at my eyes. “You were still a child when your parents died. Besides, I think that’s what gives you those dark edges. Your wings have beat against the darkest side of life.”

He shook his head. “I don’t have wings.”

I rubbed between his shoulder blades. “I think maybe you do. Maybe they were broken somewhere along the way or maybe you just forgot how to use them…”

A smile teased at the corner of his lips. “I’m no angel.”

“You’re my angel,” I insisted.”
K.S. Ruff, Broken Wings

“Well, that’s kinda romantic actually… in a slightly crazed Neanderthal kind of way.”
K.S. Ruff, The Broken Road

“Kadyn was tearing down walls faster than I could build them. I knew what to expect from men who hit… men who threatened, manipulated, demanded, and controlled. Sadly, I had no clue what to do with a man like Kadyn.”
K.S. Ruff, The Broken Road

“Kimme and Dan joined us as they returned from their stroll along the beach. “Look what I found,” Kimme announced as she dumped a pile of seashells out on the sand.
I smiled at Kimme as she sifted through her treasure. Then I thought about the treasures I had found. My eyes filled with tears as I examined each of my friends in turn.”
K.S. Ruff, The Broken Road

“Michael was a complete contradiction. One minute he was tying one of my friend’s up with duct tape and threatening to kill people. The next minute he was kissing me and presenting me with a house… only it wasn’t a house, it was a mansion with servants.”
K.S. Ruff, Beautifully Broken

“Kadyn groaned. “I cannot believe this. I’m on lockdown over here, Patrick. I can’t leave.”

“I know,” Patrick responded. “I’ve seen the news.” Patrick lowered his voice to a whisper. “You don’t think there’s a connection, do you?”

Kadyn’s eyes locked on Phil’s as he collapsed into the chair across from Phil’s desk. “Kri has a stalker with terrorist connections, the Pentagon has been peppered with bombs, and Kri’s gone missing. Of course there’s a connection.”
K.S. Ruff, Beautifully Broken
