Sigfús studied history at the University of Iceland, after which he travelled widely through Central and South America, the United States, Europe and the Middle East.
These experiences have inspired Sigfús considerably, with images from his travels featuring in his first books of poetry Út um lensportið (Out of the Scupper) and Hlýja skugganna (The Warmth of the Shadows). His book Sólskinsrútan er sein í kvöld (The Sunshine Bus is late this Evening) is based on his travels in Mexico and Guatemala. The book was nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize, as was the poetry collection Andræði (Opposite) in 2004.
