Connections in "The Legacy"
My latest novel "The Legacy" is basically a kidnapping story told against the backdrop of the 2016 Olympic Games being held in Brazil. However, there are numerous local and family connections.
Eric, one of the main characters in the book, is a graduate of the Financial Planning program at Fanshawe College in London Ontario. In real life, my oldest son is a graduate of Fanshawe who now works for RBC as an Investment & Retirement Planner.
Chip, the other son in the novel, bears a striking resemblance to my other son in real life. For those of you who read my first novel "Goliath", you'll remember that the main character in that book was based on him.
And once again, the "Dad" in this book is a widower. My wife still doesn't want me basing a character on her. However, in this book, his dead wife haunts him in his dreams. My wife likes that part of the story a lot!!!
And there are numerous references to family and friends in Saskatchewan. In real life, our family had a lot of good times out at Emma Lake in Saskatchewan.
I hope you enjoy reading "The Legacy".

Anyone know why Amazon doesn't allow Canadians to participate in Kindle ebook deals?
When tracking sales of my novel, I was surprised at how low the ebook sales were. I was under the impression that this was a rapidly growing market segment, but ebook sales only accounted for about 6% of my sales.
The main advantage of ebooks is the price. The paperback version of my novel "Goliath" lists for $9.50 USD on Amazon with the Kindle version listing for $3.50 USD. In addition, purchasers don't have to pay for shipping for the ebook version as it is simply downloaded to your Kindle device or your PC (Amazon also has Kindle apps for several other devices as well). To have my book shipped to Canada (which is where most of my readers are), the shipping costs as much or more than the cost of the book.
Amazon/Kindle offers an attractive promotion called "Kindle Countdown Deals". I signed up for this promotion and had the Kindle price of the book on sale for the weekend for 99 cents, then go to $1.99 for a few days, then to $2.99 before finally returning to its regular price. I was sure this would stimulate ebook sales as Amazon helps advertise these promotions.
However, when I tested this feature, the discounted price didn't appear. I was told that the discount would not appear on Amazon.ca, only on the main Amazon.com website. No problem. I would simply direct potential purchasers of my book to the Amazon.com website. However, the discounted price didn't appear there either.
I figured I must have done something wrong so I contacted Kindle support. I was told the discount would not appear for those of us in Canada. Even though I went to the main Amazon.com website, it detected from my IP address that I was from Canada and hid the discounted price. The support person realized this defeated the whole purpose of the promotion and said he would submit it as an enhancement request to their business team.

Will there be a sequel to Goliath?
The second most common question I've received since publishing Goliath is When will the sequel be coming out?
When I wrote Goliath, I hadn't planned on writing a sequel or creating a series of books based on it, but I've had a lot of people ask what happens next? What happens to David? Does the secret network continue to operate? What happens to Henry and Laura? I've even had several people suggest plot-lines for the sequel.
Thus, I'm pleased to announce that I will be writing a sequel to Goliath, tentatively titled "The Second Shooter". (Sorry to those of you who suggested plot-lines, but I'm not using any of them). I'm hoping to have the sequel released in the spring/summer of 2015.
It won't be my next novel released as I'm hoping to publish "The Legacy" within the next few months. It is a completely separate novel and is a kidnapping story taking against the backdrop of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. The book cover should be ready within the next few weeks.

Characters in Goliath
One of the most common questions that I have been asked since Goliath was published is "who are the characters based on?"
Although the novel is fiction, readers who know me will easily recognize some of my friends and family. Henry is really based on myself as I worked for a law firm many years ago when I lived in Alberta. The lawyers in the book are composite characters based on a few of the partners at the firm.
The two sons in the book reflect the personalities of my two sons in real life.
What about my wife, you ask? Well my wife is a very private person and would die (or more accurately, kill me) if I revealed anything too personal about her in my books. So I decided to solve that problem by making Henry a widower in the book. As a bonus, it also provided me with the opportunity to give Henry a really hot lover!!!
I hope you enjoy the book.
