NEW WEEK NEW FACE – GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY – T.I. LOWE
Planner vs. Pantser
Mapping out Road trips is a lot like Writing.
I consider myself a rebellious planner, one who plans but is ready to get off course at any moment. I take on writing a new book the same way I take on a road trip. Sure, a trip should have a designated destination from the get-go. That way the traveler won’t end up going the wrong direction, potentially getting lost and losing track of the entire reason for the trip in the first place. Same with a book. The reason/theme for the story needs to be determined before typing the first word. That way I know the direction to head toward.
But… Here’s the exciting part of a road trip as well as writing a book for me. The stops along the way can be more loosely plotted out with lots of wiggle room for spontaneity. I am a foodie and find it fun to research unique places to eat on road trips. No chain restaurants are permitted for my crowd. I think this is a good approach to apply to stories as well. Researching and coming up with unique angles to try out in a story will keep it fresh and interesting. I always have a few options saved in my notes, so I can easily change it up for whatever mood I am in. Again, the same with my stories. Loosely plotting so I’m not so dead-set on a certain chapter subject that I refuse to make adjustments that will improve the story and overall experience of the book for me as well as the reader.
Road trips should be fun and exciting. They shouldn’t be daunting and feel like work. I think strict schedules and plans can stifle the experience. Same with writing. I tell folks that writing is my passion, my hobby. I never want to ruin the fun and creativity of it with planning too strictly. Flexibility is key. Say for example: along the course of a trip, a road may suddenly become blocked due to an accident or for whatever reason. You have to be openminded before leaving your driveway that detours may end up being part of your trip. It can make for miserable traveling when you have an unwilling travel companion who gripes and complains when you have to take a different path than planned. Seriously, there is no fun in that and I’d want to leave them on the side of the road at some point along the way. I can’t help but visualize a reader wanting to do the same thing to a book when it’s clear the author didn’t take a chance in altering the direction of the story or trying out a unique angle simply because it wasn’t in their carefully plotted-out plan for the story.
Road Trip/Writing Tips:
Acknowledge Your Adventure’s Pilot
Seriously, road tripping and writing should be all about the free-spirited experience but with the right guidance. Before pulling out on the road for a trip, my family has prayer, asking God for his guidance and safe traveling mercies. I start each story in the same manner. I don’t want to do either without him or I would surely get off track and make a mess of things.
The Importance of Playlists
Another must for road trips and writing is playlists that help set the mood for the adventure. Gotta have some epic tunes to enjoy along the way. Music is all about experiencing the lyrics and melody. Music is my muse.
Enjoy the Journey
Often times, we can be in such a rush to get to the finish line of a project, a road trip, a novel, etc. that we forget to slow down and just enjoy the experience of it. A while back I found myself in a season of waiting in my writing career, so I took it as an opportunity to slowly write a new book. I savored each chapter without rushing, knowing there was no deadline, no expectation other than to simply enjoy the creative process. I have to admit, it was the most enjoyable book I have ever written. Side note: the novel is complete and just hanging out on my computer with no set plans on publishing. As much as I love sharing my new stories with readers, this has been such a freeing revelation not to have to do anything right away with it. When it’s time to share it, I will, but in the meantime I’m not fretting about it.
If we aren’t careful, life in general can become a burden instead of a blessing. Writing is a gift I have the privilege to do. I never want this to be a burden. My advice: plan loosely and look forward to spontaneity along the way.

Title: As the Light Fades
Author: Catherine West

Genre: Contemporary Fiction
THE BLURB
Sometimes we’re placed in the strangest of circumstances for the most important reasons.
After her carefully constructed life crumbles, Liz Carlisle finds herself back on Nantucket, picking up the pieces. With the family estate under renovations, the solitude she craves seems out of reach.
Matthew Stone intends to steer clear of his new tenant. She’s carrying a load of baggage, but as long as she pays the rent, he’ll let her be. He’s got enough to deal with caring for his wayward niece, Mia.
Liz doesn’t have time for teenagers and her track record with men is abysmal, but an unlikely friendship forms between the three.
When her former boyfriend is charged with assault, Liz is called to testify against him. But he knows the darkest secrets of her life—secrets she’d hoped to keep buried forever, and he’s ready to reveal them. MY REVIEW
I loved these characters so much! I’ve always had a tender spot for teens who have been wounded. Though never physically assaulted, I identified with Liz in so many ways. And I understood Matthew’s need to distance himself from controlling parents.
Though it appears a total coincidence, the fact that these three ended up tangled in each other’s lives was no accident—Father God is orchestrating our lives in every moment; they needed each other in ways they didn’t realize.
My heart ached for Liz, for her neatly constructed life crumbled at her feet along with the shattered pieces of her heart. And Mia. Resisting the very love she’s searching for. Matthew, the good son, whose dream was jerked from his hand.
As Liz and Mia and Matthew shuffle through their second chances, as they discover and embrace new dreams—and hope—I wept and encouraged, held my breath and scolded.
I was utterly immersed in this story, my heart completely smitten.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY-on-FRIDAY – BOOK REVIEW – NOW AND THEN AND ALWAYS by MELISSA TAGG
THE BLURB
“It was just a house. Just a weathered old house in a hidden grove, shuttered and still . . . ”
Last year, after traumatic circumstances forced her from her job as a nanny, Mara Bristol finally found a place to belong—the winsome Everwood Bed & Breakfast at the edge of Maple Valley, Iowa. For months, she’s helped its owner, Lenora, maintain the ramshackle property despite their shortage of guests. But when Lenora fails to return from a month-long trip and the bank threatens foreclosure, Mara worries she’s once again alone . . . abandoned . . . about to lose the only true home she’s ever known.
Detective Marshall Hawkins is no closer to whole today than he was two years ago . . . the day his daughter died. Between his divorce, debilitating migraines, and a dependence on medication, his life is falling apart. And when a reckless decision on the job propels him into administrative leave, he has no other plan but to get in his truck and drive. A one-night stay at the Everwood was supposed to be just that. But there’s something about the old house—or maybe its intriguing caretaker—that pulls him in.
Together, Mara and Marshall set out to save the Everwood. But its secrets run deeper than they could’ve imagined. As they renovate the house and search for its missing owner, they’ll each confront the pain that brought them to the Everwood in the first place . . . and just maybe discover a faith and love to help them carry on.

MY REVIEW
I do love a good book with twists and layers and mystery. And Ms. Tagg surely delivers with this story.
There’s just something romantic about a B&B. Something magical, something healing. And sometimes, something mysterious—and dangerous.
Gotta give Mara points for being tenacious. Holding out, hoping every day for Lenora to return. Clinging to a thin and fraying thread that she’s not been abandoned again.
Abandonment happens in different ways. Marshall was abandoned by way of death, and then divorce. And by his own hand to allay the guilt and despair he fought.
Everwood was more than a B&B to both Mara and Marshall. Like a friend, Everwood embraced them both, offering a balm to their wounded souls.
I admired the way Mara stood firm, knowing she was right about Lenora. I applauded her as she stepped way outside her comfort zone—and found love and support and friendship.
Marshall pours himself into helping with much needed repairs to the B&B, thinking only to numb his pain. But as he works, Everwood—and Mara—touch his shattered heart, crumbling the wall he has hidden behind. The pain ebbs, and peace seeps in.
As they work, the mystery of Lenora’s disappearance becomes more sinister. Desperate for clues, desperate to save Everwood, Mara and Marshall doggedly follow the trail even when it seems to have grown cold. Each clue, each new discovery—one surprising discovery especially—kept me turning pages to the end.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY-on-FRIDAY – BOOK REVIEW – THE OLD LACE SHOP by MICHELLE GRIEP
THE BLURB
Pour yourself a cuppa, get lost in the merriment of the season, and enjoy a Dickensian Christmas in three stories from fan favorite Michelle Griep:
12 Days a Bleakly Manor: Brought together under mysterious circumstances, Clara and Ben discover that what they’ve been striving for isn’t what ultimately matters. What matters most is what Christmas is all about . . . love.
A Tale of Two Hearts: Pleasure seeker William Barlow needs a wife immediately to gain his uncle’s inheritance, and Mina Scott is just the girl to make him look respectable—too bad she turns him down. Ought he give her a second chance?
The Old Lace Shop: Recently widowed Bella White is finally freed from the domination of the overbearing men in her life, but when she enters into a business partnership with the handsome Edmund Archer, she begins to wonder if marriage is worth a second chance.
THE AUTHOR
I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I’ve been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write–except for that graffiti phase I went through as teenager.
MY REVIEW
As with any of Ms. Griep’s books, I stepped back into a bygone era, the customs foreign, the sights unfamiliar, the smells jarring.
Oh, how I admired Bella! Such spunk, such tenacity. Bearing her wounds as a badge of courage.
Edmund bearing up under guilt, and obligation. Facing his opponents with determination.
The clash when the two meet.
I was struck with the disparate approach Bella and Edmund took to difficult circumstances. Once freed, Bella took on the world, while Edmund retreated from all but his obligations, both personal and business.
As iron sharpens iron, Bella’s enthusiasm softened Edmund’s rough edges, and those same rough edges tempered Bella’s naïve impulsiveness.
The secret of the past was an unexpected twist, and it notched up the tension as it tumbled from its hiding place.
As always, Ms. Griep gives the reader authentic characters with interesting circumstances. Characters who captivate the reader, and fill the pages with love and angst, hope and regret. Characters who compel the reader to keep reading.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – HAGAR by SHADIA HRICHI
THE BLURB
You are “The God Who Sees Me.” Discover a close relationship with God, no matter the pain or suffering in your life. Witness the depths of God’s compassion through the eyes of Hagar, a runaway slave who meets the living God in a desert of despair, where she gives Him the name El Roi, “The God Who Sees Me.” A largely forgotten Old Testament character, Hagar is actually one of only a few people who have ever spoken directly with the LORD. Through this seven week study, you will find that when you surrender your life into God’s hands, your trials and triumphs serve a magnificent purpose: to draw you into the arms of the faithful God who sees you.
THE AUTHOR
Shadia Hrichi is a passionate Bible teacher who has a heart for seeing lives transformed by the power of God’s Word. She received an MA in Biblical and Theological studies from Western Seminary, as well as an MA in Criminal Justice, and a BA in Psychology from the State University of New York.
MY REVIEW
In the 21st century it’s easy to forget that not so long ago women had few rights—or none at all. At best we were beloved of a caring husband; at worst, we were nothing more than chattel, property to be traded or bought. Women didn’t question when a man told them what to do.
I never gave much thought to Hagar. Never considered her role. Never considered her beyond her mistress dismissing her. Our role as women may have changed over the course of time, but our hearts and emotions have not. No matter Hagar did only as she was told, her heart must have been crushed to be exiled to the wilderness with her child.
Ms. Hrichi brings to light Hagar’s role, and her journey. With meticulous and in-depth insight, she guides the reader to a deeper understanding of Father God’s hand on the servant girl. The author urges the reader to probe Scripture to discover meaning, making it—as all Scripture is—applicable to our lives today.
“Am I known? Am I loved? Am I home?” Ms. Hrichi opens her study with these questions. Heart searching questions. I know I’ve wondered these things in my life. And I love her answer, “God is Behind the Seen.”
She begs the reader to “Pause to Ponder,” asking deep and probing questions, and offers a “Your Turn” section to integrate the study with our own lives. She shares Bible passages with relevant questions. She links seeming unconnected Scripture, bringing to light revelations of Who Father God is, and who we are in Him.
I especially loved her reference to God’s Word as a treasure hunt, for it surely is.

NEW WEEK NEW FACE – GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY – LINDA KOZAR
Figurative Language—Words That Paint A Picture in Your Head
Can words literally paint a picture inside your head? Nope. But we use this sort of imagery quite often in both everyday conversation and in our writing. Let’s pause for a minute and think about our daily use of figurative language. And, just so you know, by “a” minute, I don’t literally mean that you should set a timer for “one” minute. It’s all figurative. But you already know that.
Figurative language is defined as a language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Literal language states the facts as they are. “Just the facts, ma’am,” a phrase often associated with Detective Sergeant Joe Friday on Dragnet. Figurative language can transform a dull paragraph into an evocative narrative that helps readers to understand and visualize settings and characters, transforming ordinary writing into full-fledged literature. Some types of figurative language and some of my favorite examples are:
Metaphor—a comparison between things which are not alike.
The world is my oyster. You are my sunshine. Metaphors be with you.
Simile—similar to a metaphor but uses the words “like” or “as.”
Clean as a whistle. Funny as a barrel of monkeys. He stood out like a sore thumb.
Personification—ascribing human qualities to a non-human thing.
The sun spit in my eyes this morning. When opportunity knocks, you should answer.
Hyperbole—exaggerating in a humorous way to make a point.
She could start an argument in an empty house. Your snoring is calling the geese.
Symbolism—a noun with meaning in itself used to represent something different.
The word “Wuthering” means stormy. Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights” describes the nature of the characters.
You have probably studied various constructions and combinations of literary devices in English classes before, but here’s a refresher:
Onomatopoeia—name something by imitating the sound it makes.
The burning wood hissed and crackled.
Alliteration—repetition of the first consonant sounds in several words.
Betty bought the butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better.
Idiom—an expression used by a particular group of people.
He’s as mad as a mule chewing bumblebees.
Synecdoche—a figure of speech using words that are a part, to represent a whole.
Bring home the bacon. Boots on the ground.
Cliché—a phrase that is often repeated and has become meaningless.
Cat got your tongue?
Assonance-repeating a vowel sound in a phrase.
“And stepping softly with her air of blooded ruin about the glade in a frail agony of grace, she trailed her rags through dust and ashes…” ~Cormac McCarthy’s book, Outer Dark
The words, “glade, frail, grace, and trailed” set the mood.
Metonymy—a figure of speech where one thing is replaced with a word that is closely associated with it. Crown in place of a royal person. Dish instead of a plate of food.
The subtleties of the English language seem to be inherent to native speakers, but a source of frustration for others who try to find logic or make sense of certain words and phrases. While writers cannot remove those challenges entirely, we can be mindful of our reliance on figurative language. The bottom line, sorry I couldn’t resist, is that figurative language should be used with more care and nuance than it is. Think of a dense, rich chocolate cake. The first few bites are wonderful, but the more you eat, sugar overload sets in and you start to feel a bit sick. Is it easier to proclaim, “You are dead to me!” or have your character say, “I hate you?” If you decide to use literary devices, choose your words carefully. Decide which emotions you want the reader to respond to. Anger? Fear? Love? In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s character Gatsby speaks of the object of his obsession, Daisy, “The exhilarating ripple of her voice was a wild tonic in the rain.” The poet Alfred Lord Tennyson evokes a beautiful metaphor in this excerpt from In Memoriam, “Her eyes are homes of silent prayer.”
When you are “literally” writing your next book, consider bringing vibrance and imagery to your work with the use of figurative language. Be mindful that overuse can be overpowering. Try incorporating the perfect combination of figurative words and phrases to enrich your characters, settings, and storyline. Here’s hoping your next book will be so popular that copies fly off the shelves.

CHAT THURSDAY – ON BREAK, AGAIN…
“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”
“Break the rules. That’s my number one rule. I know the rules (of grammar) and I know how to break them.”
I did it to myself, really. This time I did not do it to myself. 2019 did. (no really!) And August was just cruel! Not even kidding!
I love doing my interviews, love having guests visit my little nest; interviews, however, are the most involved and time consuming of my blog feature posts. And like last year, I don’t want to do them sloppy and I won’t rush them.
With that in mind, I have deferred the remaining 2019 interviews to next year. (2020!)
My writing has suffered in the past year. Since my surgery, really. I haven’t had the energy or stamina I had before—and it was limited enough as it was.
So, for the next weeks, my attention will be on the new story, my time devoted to getting it done. I won’t rush it and I won’t do it sloppy, but my hope is (still) to have it finished and ready to release this year; I’m now looking at November. Le sigh…
Other than the guest post spots already scheduled, New Week New Face will also be deferred. i.e. I won’t be scheduling any new posts for the remainder of the year.
The one regular feature that will remain is Tuesday Reviews-Day. I mean, I’m reading and if I’m reading, I’m reviewing.
That, and Wreading Wednesday, because even if I’m not reading a book, I love to feature other authors and their books!!!
Stay with me. I appreciate all my followers!! And with “all” this new free time, I’ll have a new book in no time! right? of course right!

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY-on-WEDNESDAY – BOOK REVIEW – THE ART OF RIVERS by JANET W. FERGUSON
THE BLURB
Rivers Sullivan bears both visible and invisible scars—those on her shoulder from a bullet wound and those on her heart from the loss of her fiancé during the same brutal attack. Not even her background as an art therapist can help her regain her faith in humanity. Still, she scrapes together the courage to travel to St. Simons Island to see the beach cottage and art gallery she’s inherited from her fiancé. When she stumbles upon recovering addicts running her gallery, she’s forced to reckon with her own healing.
After the tragic drowning of his cousin, James Cooper Knight spends his days trying to make up for his past mistakes. He not only dedicates his life to addiction counseling, but guilt drives him to the water, searching for others who’ve been caught unaware of the quickly rising tides of St. Simons. When he rescues a peculiar blond woman and her sketch pad from a sandbar, then delivers this same woman to his deceased grandmother’s properties, he knows things are about to get even more complicated.
Tragic circumstances draw Cooper and Rivers closer, but they fight their growing feelings. Though Cooper’s been sober for years, Rivers can’t imagine trusting her heart to someone in recovery, and he knows a relationship with her will only rip his family further apart. Distrust and guilt are only the first roadblocks they must overcome if they take a chance on love.
THE AUTHOR
Janet W. Ferguson grew up in Mississippi and received a degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Mississippi. She has served as a children’s minister and a youth volunteer. An avid reader, she worked as a librarian at a large public high school. Janet and her husband have two grown children, one really smart dog, and a cat that allows them to share the space.
MY REVIEW
Ms. Ferguson begins this story with sweet romantic scene—and then brutally jars the reader with the deadly zing of bullets rather than wedding bells.
I love the name, Rivers, and even more, I can identify with the characters in many ways. As an artist I know the value of expressing myself through my art and my words. And though I have no physical scars, I do bear—as all of us do—heart scars. Too, this reviewer’s life has been deeply impacted by addiction.
I bristled when Rivers was thrust in the midst of recovering addicts, felt her unease, her need to be anywhere else. Don’t get me wrong—I applaud their effort and cheer their accomplishments. That’s huge. Recovery is also something I’ve witnessed firsthand.
Oh, how I longed to pull Rivers into a great hug and squeeze away her pain. To urge her to paint again. To heal. To come out from the protective layer she was hiding under, and live.
And Cooper. What a cruel burden guilt is to bear. And such a difficult thing to let go of.
Ms. Ferguson has created wonderful authentic characters, with depth and emotion, who react to circumstances and situations in such a real and raw way—how can we criticize when we know we’d do the same? Characters who endure—and survive—horrors most of us will never know.
A powerful story that kept this reviewer reading.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Chronic Love: Trusting God While Suffering with A Chronic Illness
Author:Brooke Bartz
Publisher: Ambassador International
Release Date:September 1, 2019
Genre: Christian Living, Health and Wellbeing
THE BLURB
Suffering is inescapable in this world.
Jesus told us we would face perilous trials and that even our bodies would feel the effects of the Fall. For women dealing with chronic illness, most books offer quick-fix counseling or devotional verses taken out of context, helpful only for momentary encouragement.
For true and lasting comfort we must dig deeper into God’s Word and the context in which those much-used passages were written.
In Chronic Love, Brooke Bartz reveals a deeply raw and descriptive account of life with a chronic and debilitating illness, and she shares with readers how comfort and strength can be found through the Truth in God’s Word.
Specifically designed for women who daily battle chronic illness, Chronic Love‘s goal is to provide solid Scriptural encouragement for the fight.

THE AUTHOR
[image error]Brooke Bartz is a stay-at-home wife and mom who lives daily with a chronic disease, knowing firsthand the daunting, gnawing physical and spiritual pain it causes. Yet disease was not always her close companion; in the years before her diagnosis, she grew up playing sports and earned a full scholarship to play volleyball at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. Not yet a Christian, she transferred colleges and attended an event for an on-campus ministry; as the Lord had planned, she heard the Gospel and He saved her. Soon after and while still in college, she married her childhood crush and began a volleyball coaching career.
Living with rheumatoid arthritis and gastroparesis, Brooke desires for women to know the truth about the God who loves them and is with them each day as they face disease and disability; she shares the Truth of the Bible as their ultimate healing. Brooke’s passion is spurring on the women God leads to her sphere of influence, inspiring their hearts to keep their strength and hope at the foot of the cross, to trust in the Great Shepherd to one day heal them completely in glory, even though for now they are suffering on earth.

MY REVIEW
It is evident that the heart of this author is for God, and the reader, and for those of us who suffer chronic disease and disability.
As one who has suffered a chronic illness for over a decade I wanted to like this book, and I tried, I really tried. But I found it to be rambling and disjointed. Ms. Bartz makes some strong, Biblical points, however, like praising God in hard times. Which any chronic illness is. Pointing to Scripture in the worst moments. Reminding the reader that God is always with us, regardless how we feel—physically or emotionally or spiritually.
But I do not agree with the theology in this book. I do not believe for a minute that God ordained this or any illness upon my body.
That said, I do appreciate Ms. Bartz trying to make sense of a chronic and senseless disease or condition.
