SPECIAL EDITION – REMMAYWRIMO 2019

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

I have designated May as my personal writing challenge to get this new series off and running. After months of malaise and brain fog, I’m ready to tackle this and share my newest set of stories with you!

Alas, after the spate of writing last week I have been felled by a sneak attack virus. Lethargy, sleepy, overall crummy feeling. Nothing new except it’s never hung on this long. Here’s to better days and words flowing!

Thankfully I am feeling 1000 times better this morning! YAY!! Doctor’s appointment this afternoon, then hopefully back to the story!

Although I’ve met Jeremy already, it was brief and barely in passing. Last week, though, his story begins to come out.

“What.Did.You.Do?” Mere jabbed her own finger in Bethy’s chest.

“Nothing you didn’t do first.” Bethy smiled sweetly and shrugged… summarily dismissing her sister.

My new series, FourSquare, is a change-up for me—RomCom. The first story, One for the Price of Two, has been tumbling around in my mind for several years, and I can’t wait to move the story forward, and get to know Elizabeth and Meredith—and share their story with you.

BLURB

Twin sisters Elizabeth and Meredith Elliott are so identical their own parents can’t even tell them apart. Two halves of a whole.

Elizabeth, the more cautious of the two, reining in her sister’s impetuous side. Meredith, the more daring, urging Elizabeth to step beyond her comfort zone.

They lived and breathed on pranking their family and friends. All in good fun, of course.

Until love waltzed in and turned their game on end. And Bethy and Mere—masters of the prank—get pranked.

The 5 Most Common Mistakes in Book Cover Design and How to Avoid Them

Book cover design has long been an important part of getting readers to pick up a text. Today readers are shopping for both physical and eBooks online. Book Cover Design is more important than ever.

Too many elements on the cover

This is an all too common mistake, particularly with inexperienced designers…

Not a genre fit

This is a big one. Different genres have developed distinct differences in how book covers are designed. If your book cover does not share these stylistic similarities, readers interested in that genre will pass because it doesn’t look like other books they have enjoyed…

Poor or wrong font choices

Once again, it’s all about signaling to readers what your book offers. Your font should be similar to other covers in your genre…

Poor image quality

This is an easy mistake to make if you are new to book cover design, and it’s important to be able to spot it in case you work with an inexperienced designer…

Poor readability

Today, book covers are displayed by vendors in a number of sizes and formats. Almost always, readers will see your cover at a size much smaller than a physical book cover…

Takeaways

Book cover design is critical to a book’s success, and there is a lot more to consider than you might expect…

Do you have any cover design tips or stories? Let us know in the comments.

FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – DO THE NEXT THING

When I started writing my new story, I knew the main characters names were Elizabeth and Meredith. I did not know their last name was Elliott. Nor did I realize what I had done—I gave one sister the same name as Elisabeth Elliot, wife of missionary Jim Elliot.

Rather than change the name, I decided—felt led—to keep the name and work the elder Mrs. Elliot into the story.

All that to say that my Elizabeth Elliott, Bethy, is fascinated with the missionary wife, and has as a reminder one of Mrs. Elliot’s sayings taped to the mirror in her bedroom.

Do the next thing.

I say all that to say that besides my own story, that phrase, Do the next thing, has come up several times recently. And when that happens, I believe Father God is using it to get my attention.

ATTENTION GOT.

After the death of her first husband, Mrs. Elliot returned to the missionary post they had shared in the jungles of Ecuador. Besides being a mom of a toddler and a widow, responsibilities swirled around her, most of which had been her husband’s duties. Unsure how to even begin, she recalled—or, Father brought to her remembrance—an old Saxon legend, Do the next thing.

From that (as I understand the article I’ve read) she penned her poem, Do the Next Thing.

When life overwhelms us, do we not tend to scramble to get ALL the things done? Do we even, as Christians, feel we are called upon TO do all the things? I know I did, for many years.

I blogged about that last year.

https://robinsnest212.wordpress.com/2018/04/15/blogwords-sunday-19-march-2017-front-porch-fellowship-all-the-things/

Short-n-sweet post, but to the point.

In considering what the next thing is, it occurs to me that we as humans tend to, perhaps feel the need to, see the whole plan, to know every step along the way. And in some instances, it is necessary. Building a house is one example.

But that is not His way—that is not faith. Not in the day to day, moment to moment. Because relationship doesn’t work that way.

https://robinsnest212.wordpress.com/2018/04/01/blogwords-sunday-1-april-2018-front-porch-fellowship-easter-sunday-to-become-like-him/

A couple of quotes come to mind:

We don’t always see—or hear—or know God’s plan. And perhaps we don’t know the next step. But praise is always timely. He is always worthy. And betimes, praise is what carries us through to the next “instruction.”

When we abide in Him, and are in relationship with Him, we know He is with us. Just as we know our earthly family and friends are with us, even when we don’t talk to them every day, or for days or weeks at a time.

Sometimes the next thing is monumental. An earth shattering leap of faith. Stepping out of the boat.

But sometimes, dare I say most times, the next thing is a simple task. Dusting or sweeping, holding your child’s hand while you walk to the school bus or into the store. Ironing a dress or shirt. Sometimes, the next thing is to sit in His presence.

I know, I know. That’s not really doing anything.

Ah! But it is. Sitting in Father’s presence is what we were created for. There is no higher “thing” to do.

And it is in those moments of doing “nothing,” sitting—not idly, not at all—basking in Him, fellowshipping with Him, that His still small voice clears through the rubble of the world, and whispers The Next Thing.

THE BLURB

The classic Evil Under the Sun, one of the most famous of Agatha Christie’s Poirot investigations, has the fastidious sleuth on the trail of the killer of a sun-bronzed beauty whose death brings some rather shocking secrets into the light.

The beautiful bronzed body of Arlena Stuart lay face down on the beach. But strangely, there was no sun and Arlena was not sunbathing…she had been strangled.

Ever since Arlena’s arrival the air had been thick with sexual tension. Each of the guests had a motive to kill her, including Arlena’s new husband. But Hercule Poirot suspects that this apparent “crime of passion” conceals something much more evil.

THE AUTHOR

Agatha Christie was born in 1890 and created the detective Hercule Poirot in her debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920). She achieved wide popularity with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) and produced a total of eighty novels and short-story collections over six decades.

THE FIRST LINE

When Captain Roger Angmering built himself a house in the year 1872 on the island off Leathercombe Bay, it was thought the height of eccentricity on his part.

MY THOUGHTS

Like most of Dame Christie’s stories that I’ve read, it was so long ago I don’t remember much about it—except how much I liked it!

A Writer’s Prayer

Lord, inspire me to write stories that touch readers’ hearts.  Breathe your spirit into my characters so they come alive on the written page.  Help me develop intriguing plots full of twists and turns that capture the imagination and move the story to a satisfying resolution.  Keep me focused and on schedule, and take away any fear or sense of inadequacy that blocks my progress.  Give me courage to step out in faith, to stretch and grow and to be the writer you have called me to be.   Amen.

FAST FAVES

Call or Text  – Text

Yoga Pants or Jeans – Jeans

rem:  Hullo Erica! Welcome to my little nest. Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?

ERICA:  I was born and raised in central Kansas, and I am a lifelong Kansas Jayhawks fan. I now reside in Minnesota with my husband and two grown kids.

rem:  #gotspring??? Tell us three random things about yourself no one knows.

ERICA:  I’m not sure there is much about me that NO ONE knows… rem: me too!  Um, I sit in the same pew at church every week. I never eat fish or seafood of any kind, and wearing turtleneck shirts makes me claustrophobic.

rem:  You can send all your fish and seafood my way! Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite?

ERICA:  Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.  I first remember reading this verse when I was a young teen, a time in life that can be full of uncertainty and fear, especially of the future. The peace I felt when I read this verse was so soul-deep, that it has remained with me ever since.

rem:  Oh, yes yes yes! What is your favourite quotation and why?

ERICA:  Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. ~ Winston Churchill I am a huge Churchill fan, as well as being a quote fan, so merging the two to answer the question seems appropriate.

rem:  For as crotchety and difficult as I’ve always heard he was, he was a wise man. What’s the most random thing in your bag or on your desk?

ERICA:  I carry a small purse, so there’s no room for random things…but on my desk I have a stuffed Kiwi that, when squeezed, sends out a recording of a New Zealand haka. That’s pretty random. J

rem:  How cute is that! What’s your all-time favorite movie? Favorite TV show?

ERICA:  Favorite movie is Rio Bravo starring John Wayne. You can’t do better than the Duke. Favorite TV show…It’s a toss-up between NCIS (the original one) and Leverage.

rem:  The Duke is a classic! If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

ERICA:  At the moment, I would go back to the Regency era so I could observe London Society. Mostly because I’m writing Regency fiction and I would like to see what I’m getting right and what I should change.

rem:  Can I go with you? If you could spend an evening with a fictional character, who would it be and why?

ERICA:  I would have dinner with Alec Ramsey, central figure in Walter Farley’s The Black Stallion series…because he was my first book boyfriend crush, and I’d like to see if he stood the test of time. J

rem:  What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

ERICA:  Christian Fiction is full of hope. Hope in hard circumstances, hope for our future, hope in Someone outside ourselves. Being a novelist has expanded my faith and my fellowship. I know so many more Christians as a result of being a novelist, both writers and readers.

rem:  Oh, Erica, yes! That’s what our faith walk is all about, isn’t it?  When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

ERICA:  The skill-level of the author to make me forget I’m reading. If the writer can take themselves out of the story and let me experience it, I’m all in. Fiction pet peeve…I don’t know that I have one. Maybe anachronistic language?

rem:  So annoying! I beta read for someone (can’t remember who… ) recently and the language seemed off… I did message her to let her know. What would you do if you weren’t writing?

ERICA:  I was a history teacher before I started writing fiction, so maybe I would go back to that.

rem:  I love history! Probably why historical fiction is my favorite genre. What are you reading right now?

ERICA:  I have wildly eclectic tastes. I just finished Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, Dick Francis’s High Stakes, and I’m starting Will Thomas’s 3rd Barker and Llewellyn mystery The Limehouse Text. I’m also reading a True Crime Regency about the disappearance of Maria Glenn, a biography of Admiral Lord Cochrane, and a non-fiction about George Washington’s runaway slave Ona Judge.

rem:  Oh my! I, too, have eclectic tastes—but I can’t keep up with more than one story at a time. (perhaps because I’m juggling my own… )  What do you munch on while you write?

ERICA:  I try not to munch when I write, but I drink a lot of tea. In winter hot Earl Grey, in summer iced black mango.

rem:  You people are so disciplined!! LOL How did you become a Seekervillian, and what do you like best about it?

ERICA:  I was invited to join in January of 2018. I love that this group of women is dedicated. To Jesus, to writing, to educating, to kindness.

rem:  It shows in every post, and in the feedback and response ya’ll give to comments on the blog. What was your first Seekerville post?

ERICA:  I guest-posted on Seekerville way back in 2008? The post was titled Unpubbed Island, and it talked about some of the inhabitants, and why they might never get off the Island…a la Gilligan and crew.

rem:  Love the concept! Too cute—and too true. Have you tried the recipes on the Yankee Belle Café? What was your favorite?

ERICA:  Alas, I am not much of a cook! I am a fan of Mary Connealy’s Faster than Fast Food cookbook though!.

rem:  Tell us a little about your writing journey.

ERICA:  I began writing for publication in 2006, entered contests, took classes, went to conferences, and wrote, wrote, wrote. At the ACFW Conference in 2008, I received my first contract with Heartsong Presents/Barbour. My first book released in the fall of 2009, and since then, I have published more than 35 novels and novellas.

rem:  Sheesh woman! Color me impressed!! That’s a LOT of books. What is your Writing Routine? Where do you write: In a cave, a coffeehouse, or a cozy nook?

ERICA: I am a coffee shop writer. I get out of the house several afternoons each week, pop in the headphones, sip tea, and write. I’m at a coffee shop right now!

rem:  Well of course you are.  #winkwink  What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

ERICA:  There are so many things. The creative process, the editing, holding a new book in my hot little hands, the friendships, the challenges…

rem:  All so true—but holding that first ever copy of a new book in your hot little hands—ain’t nothing like it!  What was the hardest thing about publishing? The easiest?

ERICA:  The hardest for me is the uncertainty. When will that first contract come? When will the next one come? WILL the next one come at all? The easiest, the writing and imagining of stories.

rem:  What are your top 3 recommendations for a new writer? What 3 things would recommend not doing?

ERICA:

Do:  Have a humble spirit, willing to learn.

Do:  Read. A lot. In your genre. Out of your genre.

Do:  Don’t become obsessed with a single project. Finish it and move on. Write the next thing.

rem:  In my current story I have two main characters (twins) and one is named Elizabeth Elliott. She is fascinated with the real life missionary wife, and has her quote, “Do the next thing.” taped to her bedroom mirror. You are quite the history aficionado. What is the most unusual story you’ve discovered in your research?

ERICA:  I would be hard-pressed to think what is the most unusual story I’ve uncovered in literally hundreds of hours of research. I recently returned from a couple of trips to the DC area, visiting several Civil War battlefields in the process, and one thing that struck me is how different it is to actually walk those battlefields and see the terrain, which looks so different from the two-dimensional maps in textbooks, and to see the impact the environs had on the decisions of various commanders. If you’ve never visited a battlefield site, I highly recommend it.

rem:  I’ve not visited a battlefield in real life, but have in several novels. And that, too, brings it to life far more than a two dimensional map! Tell us about your Red Cross Signature Quilt.

ERICA:  Several years ago, my daughter and I visited a tiny museum in Dodge County, MN, and we saw a Signature Quilt. White, with red crosses, the quilt was embroidered with dozens of names. We learned that during World War I, funds were raised for the Red Cross by selling space on a signature quilt for people’s names. When the quilt was complete, it was raffled off, and the proceeds went to the Red Cross. My imagination was charged. I submitted a proposal to my Publisher for a story that had a Red Cross quilt, and I also undertook to create my own quilt. I chose to embroider it with the names of all the Dodge County, MN World War I veterans, and the quilt was donated to the museum where it resides with the original that inspired the story and the new quilt.

rem:  Erica, that is so inspiring! Do you think of the entire story before you start writing?

ERICA:  Yes. I am a plotter. I need to know where the story is headed before I write it.

rem:  What is your current project?

ERICA:  I am currently writing a three-book series set during the British Regency period.

rem:  One of my favorite eras, and one of my favourite locales. Tell us about why you wrote this book.

ERICA:  Truthfully, after writing so many historical novels set in the American West, I was a bit bored. I wanted a challenge, and the Regency Era appealed to me, so I gave it a try.

rem:  What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

ERICA:  The first book in the series is a Fish-Out-Of-Water story about a soldier who performs an act of bravery and is rewarded by the Prince Regent with an earldom, a new wife, and a country manor house that is falling to bits. As the new earl tries to navigate his new position in society, his new marital status, and his derelict house, he’s also trying to recover his memories of the battle, his act of bravery, and what it is that he doesn’t know that will cost someone their life.

rem:  Annnndddd….  I’m hooked! What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

ERICA:  That God both hears our prayers and He doesn’t make mistakes.

rem:  And we so easily forget that sometimes! Anything you’d like to add?

ERICA:  Thank you for having me!

rem:  My pleasure, Erica. Thank you so much for chatting with us at my little nest today!

THE BLURB

When one Coast Guard officer is found dead and another goes missing, Coast Guard Investigative Service special agent Finn Walker faces his most dangerous crime yet. His only clues are what little evidence remains aboard the dead officer’s boat, and the direction the clues point to will test Finn and the Guard to their limits.

When investigative reporter–and Finn’s boss’s sister–Gabby Rowley arrives, her unrelenting questions complicate an already volatile situation. Now that she’s back, the tug on Finn’s heart is strong, but with the risks she’s taking for her next big story, he fears she might not live through it.

Thrown together by the heinous crime, Finn and Gabby can’t ignore the sparks or judgments flying between them. But will they be able to see past their preconceptions long enough to track down an elusive killer, or will they become his next mark?

THE AUTHOR

[image error]Praised by New York Times best-selling author Dee Henderson as “a name to look for in romantic suspense,” Dani Pettrey has sold more than a half a million copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels stand out for their “wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters” (Publishers Weekly), “gripping storyline[s],” (RT Book Reviews), and “sizzling undercurrent of romance” (USA Today).

Her Alaskan Courage series and Chesapeake Valor series have received praise from readers and critics alike and spent multiple months topping the CBA bestseller lists. Dani has also been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a Christy Award finalist, two National Readers’ Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing’s Best Award.

She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves–full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband.
