WWW- The Box

I’ve been quiet again.  I am so sorry about that.  Things have been hectic here and it’s taking its toll.  Between getting ready for this huge move to Denver, leaving my beloved Alaska, and being sick from the season change, I’ve been lucky to know what day it is. That being said I’m really hoping this is wednesday.  I make no promises though.  :)

So for those who are new, an amazing group of authors and I get together every week with a single writing prompt and have to come up with a one hundred word story.  Then we share the love and see how much it changes from person to person.  This is pretty rough on me because I like using words, and 100 is pretty limiting.

You find a box in the attic that isn’t yours.
I groaned and dropped the box on the dusty attic floor, sending motes dancing through the air.  Cleaning out Mom’s attic was not how I wanted to spend the day but someone had to do it.  A lump formed in my throat but I swallowed it down and pulled open the box.   It was full of baby things from my adoption and a packet of photographs

My older sister Alice in a hospital gown smiled at the camera, holding a newborn baby.  Confused, I turned it over and read the inscription.

Alice and Ginny.

My sister was my birth mother.

Changeling is LIVE! Let's celebrate by giving stuff away!

Changeling went live last night and I woke up this morning to find not only were people interested in it, I was ranking in all categories!  At this point I started ugly crying so hard my husband thought something was wrong.  :D  And today I get to celebrate this with lots of great giveaways which I love to do.  The release party on facebook is just about to kick off and I can already tell its going to be a smashing success.  BUT I live in Alaska which means while everyone on the east coast is ready to party with me, some on the west coast are still stuck at work.  So lucky for you, I promised a giveaway last week if we could get my fan page on facebook to 300 before the book released.

Not only did you guys come through, you came through HUGE, shooting over my goal by 80 people!  Wow!    So I get to reward you guys with kindle gift cards so you can feed your e-readers lots of amazing books!   a Rafflecopter giveaway

WWW

I feel both completely on the ball and totally lost this week.  As many of you know, my debut novel Changeling drops on friday so I’m all kinds of wigged out. Happy wigged out, but wigged out nonetheless.

Picture

So thank freaking goodness that I wrote this weeks prompt the day I got it instead of waiting until last night.  You might have wound up with one hundred words worth of head scratching.  Instead you get an actual story.  For those of you who are new, every wednesday I get together with a group of amazing authors and we write a story comprised of 100 words from a prompt.  No more. No Less.
I stared at the flames that had…
Jenna stared at the flames that had burned the house to the ground.

She had lived in that house with him for a decade.  Ten agonizing years in the clutches of the man who had snatched her from her front yard before she was old enough to know better than to talk to strangers.   Before she knew that evil was real.

But now that was over.  Seth was dead and she was safe.  Reaching in her pocket, she ran her fingers over the cold metal of Seth’s favorite lighter and smiled.

The fire had purified them both.

She was free.

Wonhundred Word Wednesday

Picture okay. my bad. I am a horrible person. I totally skipped last week. I am SO SO SORRY.  So to make up for it, I did extra good this week.

This is based on a thousand true stories.....because Karma is a beautiful beautiful lady, and that bus she drives?  Oh it's great. :D

*names haven't been changed because I made them up*

Would you like fries with that? Crazy how the worst day can turn around completely in the blink of an eye.

Every school has that one girl.  You know the one, your school had one too.  She made you feel inferior.  Made you question your value and your worth because you weren’t fit to shake her pom poms or sit at her lunch table because…well does it matter? It’s always something arbitrary.  Too smart. Too quirky.  Too….whatever.

To see Mackenzie Conroy standing behind the counter at Kingburger, her cheap mascara smudged beneath her lifeless eyes-it was karma.

And yes, I would like fries with that justice.

Picture How did it feel peaking at 17? Okay so I'll admit I still find this hilarious.  Because admit it, every school had that one uptight Regina from Mean Girls wannabe who seemed blessed beyond measure and left your eye twitching every time she called you out for wearing knock off tennies.   I met mine a few years back. It was a moment of beauty that I relished for approximately ten minutes before I went home to my family, thankful for my blessings.

And in case you are that girl...tread carefully.  That girl you just made cry may grow up to be a writer.

Picture Justice is a dish best served in ink for all eternity. They see me blogging...we rolling....go check out these other writers and see if they too sought literary justice Wendy Knight, Author: www.wendyknightauthor.blogspot.com

Wonhundred Word Wednesday

Picture Yep. It's wednesday, time for another epic one hundred word story.  I won't lie, this week was rough.  I wrote like four versions and then tried my best to figure out which one sucked least which wasn't easy because they all sucked pretty equally. And massively.

Picture Until you've tried to write a story in 100 words, don't judge. You think Nanowrimo is tough? HA! Finally I realized I was forcing it and I basically needed to knock it off and let the story go where it wanted to go which isn't someplace I actually anticipated but hey, it happens.  So here you go. Enjoy.

That's what you get when you follow your heart. It seems like Matt and I had been together forever. When he left for college I knew he was taking my heart with him.  Have you ever tried to function without your heart?  It’s impossible.

So I did the only thing that made sense.  I caught a bus and decided to surprise him.

I should have called.  The blonde who answered the door in his shirt seemed surprised to see me, but not as surprised as Matt.  Not as angry as me.

That’s what happens when you follow your heart, you wind up in jail on two counts of murder.

Picture I know right?  But that's where it said it wanted to go so...there it went. :)  Go poke around the other participants and see where their prompt took them.  Hopefully one of them will be happier than mine.

Teaser Tuesday

Picture Teaser Tuesday:  An excerpt from Changeling. I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. Or maybe I wasn't asleep after all. The tang of salt filled my nostrils, and I jerked my eyes open and sat up so fast it was like a spring had vaulted me back up.
I was on the damned beach.
"You have got to be freaking kidding me," I growled, flinging myself back onto the ground and shutting my eyes tightly. If I ignored it, the dream would change. It would go away.
"That doesn't look comfortable." Aleksander's voice carried on the breeze, and I opened one eye and turned my head toward the sound.
He was sitting on a large rock a couple of feet away, the corners of his mouth lifting in amusement.
"It's not. The sand is damp, but I'm hoping that, if I ignore you, you'll go away."
"No such luck," he said with a smirk. "I'm not going anywhere. I'm your Caomhnóir so I have nowhere else to be. You are the sole recipient of my attentions."
I glared at him, ignoring the way my heartbeat sped up at his words.
"So do you believe me now?"
"No,” I said stubbornly, dragging myself up to a seated position. "I don't want to believe you."
"Desire doesn't alter reality, Cassie. Whether you want to believe me or not, this is real, so I suggest you cancel the pity party and we can move on to something productive."
"I'm not throwing a pity party." I glared at him.
"Aren't you?" he asked, standing up and reaching out a hand. “I’m hoping that there will at least be cake. A party isn’t really a party unless there’s cake.”

WONhundred word wednesdays!

I've been very blessed with the opportunity to take part in something called Wonhundred word wednesdays with some pretty amazing authors.  So we get a writing prompt and we got a whopping hundred words with which to compose a story.  Sounds easy you say? Yeah, that's because you haven't tried it.    Picture So anyway, here is my submission for Wonhundred Word Wednesday

The Devils name isn’t really Lucifer. It’s Fred, but I call him Dad. It’s not easy being the child of Satan. You think your parents are strict? Forget being grounded. When your Dad is the Morning Star, you do time in the pit for screwing up.

Which makes what I did even more idiotic.

I engaged in some good old rebellion all in the name of love when instead of corrupting the most beautiful human heart in existence, I gave her mine. She didn’t want it. It was all for nothing.

As it turns out, hell has nothing on heartbreak.
This is the part where you go check out all the other awesome blogs taking part so you can see just how widely a writing prompt can inspire. :)

Trailers, edits and new projects oh my!

First things first, I have to share the book trailer for Changeling!  We're about 45 days out from the release so I'm getting super stoked about that!    The cover is not in the trailer, it's still in the works and I will share that with you as soon as i have it.   I'm also doing a giveaway on my facebook (http://www.facebook.com/authorkrwilburn).  If you comment on the thread and share the trailer, you could win a ten dollar amazon gift card.  And for more fun, Changeling is now on Good reads so you can add it to your to be read list.   It's crazy for me as a first time author to see myself listed as an author on Goodreads.  Somehow that's what made it real.  not the publication acceptance, not the contract, not the trailers or the edits, it's Goodreads.  yeah I'm a goober, I know.

Speaking of edits, i got the last of my edits back from my amazing editor yesterday (see sidebar to find her page if you need a great one).  She's been fantastic for me and for this book.  My big problem as a writer is overuse of words.  I swear if it weren't for Mickey everyone would be whispering in my book. Everyone and everytime.  If you're like me and write in the wee hours of the morning, it's good to have an editor who catches when you were clearly stuck on repeat.

Onto projects, I'm working on two.  :)  The Dreaming is on the back burner for now, not that Finn is okay with that, but I have other deadlines first.  I'm working on a short story for you called Captive and of course on Irresistible which has a publication date set for August 12th which also happens to be my wedding anniversary!    That's all my news for now so I guess I better get back to work!  Before I do though, let me leave you with a new to me song from a british band that I absolutely love.  This song is the only one they have that you can get on the US iTunes, but if you like them as much as  I did, you can find them on amazon.  This song has been my writing jam for days now.
