Indie Author Fridays – All about Vegas!

There are times that Amazon is really on the ball with their book recommends.  They know I write YA fiction, but they also know I have a deep love for contemp romance. Probably because of my buying history. (Okay yes, it’s my buying history okay.)  So when the amazing Winter Renshaw put up her newest book, Vegas Baby, I was all in! Pun intended.   If you don’t know, the Romance Times convention will be in Las Vegas this year, and despite growing up in California, I’ve never been. I’ve done Reno more times that I can remember but no Vegas.    I’m looking forward to going not just because Vegas, or the convention but because my oldest Army buddy Jan lives there and I can’t wait to see her.

12548917_1546207292361939_2583888132031350310_nBack to the point, I’ve never been to Vegas so when I saw this pop up, and knowing how much I love Winter’s books anyway, it was a one click.  This is the story of Crew, a sexy as hell professional gambler who is about to be verbally assaulted by his neighbor, Calypso, because he has a penchant for making the ladies scream. Every night.  It made me laugh immediately because it reminded me of Alice Clayton’s Wallbanger (If you haven’t read it, read it.)  But our Dear Calypso is not Wallbanger’s Caroline.  Calypso is a true hippie, a commune born and bred pacifist who immediately feels guilty for most mean things she thinks.  When one of Crew’s flings drops off a baby she claims is his and walks away, the only woman screaming through the walls is Baby Emme.  Calypso, amazing as she is, steps up and teaches Crew how to care for his new daughter so he doesn’t resort to Three Men and a Baby type shenanigans.  Along the way they find love, deal with their respectively jacked up families, and discover that blood isn’t thicker than water. These characters are well developed, sexy as hell together, and my favorite: Believable.  There’s a reason this one is in the top twenty of all kindle books right now.

As soon as I was done with this one, Amazon recommended Jillian Dodd’s Vegas Love, and with it’s beautiful cover, I knew I had to give it a shot. it’s on the KU program so I didn’t think twice about it. Side note: I love KU.  I’m frugal with my money since my husband gave me a book budget (grumble grumble) and the KU program lets me get my fix without getting side eye. It’s also introduced me to authors I might not have ever tried before but now am addicted to.  Back to the subject matter!

Vegas Love is about a disgraced Starlett who is having a shitty week. Not did her ex, a country star whose career is plummeting, 12193327_1081530725204727_1889156650616743024_nrelease a sex tape he filmed without her knowledge, but now her Jonas Brother-esque boy band boyfriend dumped her in the middle of a friends wedding, VIA PRESS RELEASE (which made me giggle since in a story I’m working on the heroines soon to be ex delivered his divorce papers via assistant), because Image. Poor Ashlyn! Lucky for her, as she’s ditching the wedding to drown her sorrows in some bubbly, a super hot stranger she calls Sexy, dubs her Hot Ass and the pair embark on an epic night worthy of Vegas. But when they go back to the real world, will Hot Ass and her Sexy be able to cope with the fact that they are Ashlyn and her new Junior Agent Cash? And can they keep their hands off each other so Cash doesn’t get fired for screwing the talent?   This was a fantastic book and I’m about to make my way through Jillian’s backlist now. This wound up in my permanent collection.

I admit I might be partial to Vegas Wedding themed stories since Christina Lauren released Sweet Filthy Boy, but it’s an addiction I’m not willing to rehab from.  So please readers, give me your best Vegas themed recommends, read Vegas Baby and Vegas Love, and if possible, come see me and join in the fun at the RT Convention!

The one with arduous reposting of old blogs

I have good news and bad news. Okay so for me it’s good news and bad news. For everyone else it’s irrelevant. I tracked down my old RSS Feeds and was able to import my blogs up to May 2014. I still don’t have anything from May 2014 to May 2015 because go daddy hates me. *shakes fist*

But it is something.  It means I have some of my earliest and best won hundred word wednesday flash fiction stories.  Not all of them, but the ones I love best.  Losing out on all those blog posts hurts my heart.  But at least I have some of them back. Let this be a lesson to you all. Back up ALLA DA THINGS!

Much love and happy Not Monday

The one with Rebekah Ganiere’s new release!

I love me some Rebekah Ganiere.  She’s in my writers group, and is really just a mainstay of talent and support. We got to know each other at the RT Convention last year, so I of course had to go read all of her books. Well her newest release is out and YOU WANT TO READ IT!

Blurb

Raine’s a Fae with no magic. Banished to live among “Mundanes” in the human world she works as an Inquisitor for Otherworlders. And she is having a very bad start to her New Year!

Her dragon Sam wants a girlfriend. Her weretiger boyfriend Jordan is being strangely hormonal. And old enemies are emerging from the woodwork, forbidding Slade, her only friend, from giving her any magical assistance.

Things start to look up when Cupid offers Raine a job with a fat paycheck- if, before Valentine’s Day, she finds the person screwing with his dating service and getting his clients killed.

But Raine isn’t the only one trying to figure out what’s going on. The Guardians have their eyes trained on Raine. And as the Otherworlder version of the Secret Police, she can’t afford to get on their bad side.

Raine must discover who wants Cupid to close his doors for good, and deal with Jordan’s sudden need to take a Valentine’s Day trip to Vegas, all while trying to keep herself out off everyone’s hit list.

Excerpt

Raine reached for her pants. Jordan’s large warm arms wrapped around her waist and he turned her to face him.

“Hey.” His deep voice soothed her.

She held back the tears in an effort to keep from showing weakness. She never talked about her parents. Or her home plane. Or anything having to do with where she’d come from. Not even with Jordan.

He tilted her chin with his calloused finger and forced her to look into his deep green eyes.

“Are you okay?” His voice was gentle as a spring rain.

“Yeah, I’m great. My parents who haven’t spoken to me in over four years just sent me a letter demanding that I help a stupid sprite with some problem probably involving the fact that her bubbles are the wrong color in her washing machine.”

Jordan’s chuckle purred in his chest and rumbled through her like a bass drum.

“I didn’t know sprites had washing machines.”

She pushed away from him. “You know what I mean.” She was in no mood to be chided.

He pulled her back into a tight embrace. “Come on darlin’. It’s going to be okay.”

His warmth smothered her but the connection was exactly what she needed. Over the last month things had been weird with Jordan. He’d been busier than usual with work and his pack and his dad. She didn’t want to believe that his sudden distance had anything to do with her and in moments like these, when he held her tight, she almost believed that she wasn’t at fault.

His hard body sent a thrill through her. Sex with Jordan was intense and wild and she could never get enough. She clung to him, her nails digging into his back.

“Hey now,” he said. “You know scratching gets me all fired up.” He nuzzled her neck trailing his warm lips down to her collarbone.

Goosebumps rose all over her body and she shied away from him and giggled.

“Did you just giggle?” he asked.

“No.” She feigned horror. “I never giggle.”

“Oh really?” He bent down and licked up the line of her throat up to her ear.

Her breath caught and she tried to form thoughts that didn’t involve Jordan being naked.

He nibbled around the side of her ear and up to the pointed sensitive tip. Her legs weakened and warmth pooled between her thighs.

“I love your ears.” He flicked his tongue into the inner rim. “They’re so much like a tiger’s.”

Shockwaves of pleasure shot through her. She grabbed the back of his head and pulled his hair. When his eyes met hers they were the fiery orange glow of his tiger.

His smile broadened. “Don’t do that if you don’t want to play. You know I like it rough darlin’.”

“Ewww…get a room,” said Sam.

“This is our room,” growled Jordan, his eyes never leaving hers.

“I’ll just go in my room then,” said Sam. “Maybe I can find a re-run of Game of Thrones. Those female dragons make my scales tingle. Fiesty.”

“Out!” Alpha dominance poured off Jordan in rivulets. The predatory nature of his muscular body exuded sex and made Raine’s temperature spike.

Sam left muttering about sexy wing spans.

It’d been too long since she’d felt Jordan’s skin on hers. Ten days and five hours to be exact. She needed him. Letting go of his hair she slipped her hands under his shirt raking her nails down his back. “So, I shouldn’t do something like this?”

His eyes closed and he shivered, letting out a low growl. “Raine,” his voice was tight as a drum and the sound of her name on his lips made her weak.

She slid her hands inside his low slung jeans and grabbed his firm buttocks. “Say my name again,” she whispered.

He opened his eyes and they’d gone to slits like a cat’s. His intense gaze, softened and he crushed her against him. “Raine.”

His hard length pressed against her belly and she shivered in anticipation. She pushed her hips into his and his hands molded onto her rear. His gaze locked on hers for a moment longer and then he attacked.

Dropping her to the bed her covered her mouth with his, claiming her lips. Her feet hung off the too small bed and the box spring groaned under his weight.

Need wound tight inside her and she fiddled with his belt buckle. She bit his neck, on the tendon and swirled her tongue down the length of his throat.

“Raine.” His voice came out more animalistic growl than human. He grabbed the headboard and it creaked under his grip. The nails from his right hand dug deep into her hip.

She stopped licking him. Crap!

The one with the Flashfiction

images

I am so excited!  My new years resolution this year was to devote myself to writing again. I’ve missed it so very much.  And one of the ways I maintained my creativity was participating in Wonhundred Word Wednesdays!  If you haven’t been with me in this before, it’s a one hundred word short story based off of a single prompt.   Let me tell you, it’s not easy. It’s just enough to spark some creative juice and make you want to go tearing into a new story. We won’t even talk about the difficulty of hitting 100 words on the dot!

UI96eBy

Allow me to introduce you to this week’s creepy story.

The Prompt: Outside the cabin, the wind howled through the trees

The Cabin

Outside the cabin, the wind howled through the trees and mixed with the keening whine that set my heart racing. I crouched under the table, gripping the handle of the kitchen blade tightly.

A shadow filtered through the window and the handle of the door turned. The deadbolt stopped it from opening and I stifled a cry with my other hand. The sound stopped immediately as the creature sniffed loudly at the door before erupting into howls that would haunt my nightmares.

I should have known I wasn’t safe, that the werewolf that bit me would come back for me.

The one where I’m knee deep in edits

Happy Monday! I know, total oxymoron, no Monday is ever good. Especially not MLK day if I’m stuck working and the rest of my family is home snoring.

giphy

But let’s get real. Even if I were at home, I’d still be working.  For those not in the know, I moved again. (YAY!).  We got a much nicer house for Christmas.  I gained some cool new things (double garage for my gym? Yes please!  Bigger pantry? Yes please! Backyard pool? YES PLEASE!) I lost on office space. Again. /sigh.

So I spent the weekend perfecting my new little writers nook, and crying that my lovely corner desk has been separated and is now a tiny small desk. It still needs work of course, but let’s be honest. I don’t even have my books on the shelves yet.  I just don’t have time for that right now.

I’m in the revise/edit process for Changeling, polishing it up, adding bits in, and generally making it a stronger, better book.  We are still on track for re-release in March, just in time to get ready for the RT Booklover’s Convention.

I’ll admit, the last few months have been one blow after another, but I’m over it and ready to be productive and happy again.  New House helped adjust that attitude, so whenever I feel the urge to wallow and be unproductive, I ask myself, WWSD?  That’s What Would Skeletor Do? for the unitiated.  And I know what Skeletor would say to those unproductive feelings:

The one where I flew the coop

If you follow my Facebook page, you probably saw my vaguebooking about Changeling and the Siofra Chronicles in general. I hate vaguebooking but this is one of those instances where sharing details would be legit unprofessional.

So what I will say is that Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly was not the right home for this series. They do great things for some authors, or really it’s more likely that those authors would do amazing if Stalin was their publisher because that’s just the kind of people they are. I didn’t feel like Changeling was getting the right kind of support, or reaching the right kind of audiences, and therefore, they were not the right home for me.

My contract came with an easy out clause, but I was hesitant about taking it. I’ve spent the last six months or so, at least since RT, pondering the future of this series and my future with CHBB. At this time it is mutually beneficial to both CHBB and myself to part ways so I can walk away without feeling bad about it.

What does this mean for Changeling?

For now, it’s going to be unavailable while I sort through my options. After this experience I’m not even sure I want to deal with a small publisher again, and traditional publishers aren’t keen to pick up pre-published works unless they’ve sold FSOG numbers. So this series will be a full Self Pub, meaning I retain all control on dates, covers, etc.

What about the Dreaming?

Ah, The Dreaming. If you remember it was supposed to release in June, but didn’t because of the great hacking incident where my computer was wiped. If you ever want to send a writer into a state of absolute shock and paralysis, that will do it. I totally got where Stephanie Meyer was coming from with Midnight Sun after that. It was done! Signed, sealed ready to deliver! and then it was gone and I had to rewrite the entire thing.

So we tried to set a new date for September but my editor (I have never used CHBB in-house editors) was unavailable at that point so I’ve been sitting on it while I debated what to do with this series. Right now I’m planning on releasing the Dreaming shortly after I re-release Changeling in early to mid March.

What about the covers?

I paid for all covers, promo materials, etc out of my own pocket, but if I’m rebooting it, it’s a major reboot. I’m re-editing it with my amazing editor Mickey, Regina Wamba of Mae I Designs will be doing a new cover and Inkstain is scheduled to redo the interiors as well.  This means that when you get access to Changeling again, it’s going to be amazing from cover to cover, and hopefully the words do it justice.

In the meantime, I’m going to continue working on my nano projects and enjoying life. If there’s a lesson in all of this, it’s do your research. If someone tells you the sky is blue, don’t try and convince yourself it’s azure. Sometimes blue really is just blue.

The one where my webhosting hates me

pardon the mess…oh wait that’s me. I’m the mess. While taking my first and only vacation in ten years, my website kind of went to hell.  Well not really, but my hosting expired and I missed the renew notice since I was in Jamaica and lost, like, everything.

So I am currently rebuilding everything, if you’ll pardon the mess and be patient.  This is an excruciating process for me.  I built my website myself and it was perfect. I’m torn now between redoing everything exactly as it was and then commencing hourly backups because EFF YOU WEBHOSTING THAT RHYMES WITH HO BADDY and trying something brand new.

In the meantime you can keep up with me on my facebook at http://www.facebook.com/authorkrwilburnhttp://www.facebook.com/authorkrwilburn

Road trip from hell: Day 1

Picture Freddie the reindeer didnt make the sled team but thats okay. He was repurposed.

This first day has been crazy. We left fairbanks this afternoon (there was an obligatory farthest north dennys visit for a last chance at an untinate scramble with reindeer sausage. What? Not my fault blitzen got lippy) so we only made it to Beaver Creek in the Yukon.

Picture Mad i missed the giant plywood mounty. :(

On the bright side, since we are caravanning and i got the car with the dogs and my middle daughter, instead of listening to classic rock tge whole way like the other car, we listened to jennifer l. Armentrouts luxen series on audible all day. Made the trip much more pleasant.

Picture She totally eye rolled me here. She doesnt know im a totally famous author and she should like, love me and stuff. Oh thats right....im just mom.

This hotel though is such a bust. Theres thos epic place called buckshot bettys (i know, right?) with epic cinnamon rolls and awesome little cabins...but theyre closed for a couple days so we are at the formerly glorious westmark. Apparently there used to be a dinner show and fancy rooms, but that building is all boarded up and im pretty sure this is the wing of the hotel they relegated to truckers they suspected of being mass murderers in disguise. But hey! 3 cents off a liter of gasine! (Still working in that mental transition to the metric system while in canada).

Long story short...i think this is total horror story fodder. O.o

Picture So many levels of nope that if this were a nope sled on the nope-diderod, i would totally win the grand prize. Just call me nope mackey.

Wonhundred Word Wednesday

This one was hard not to get all personal with.  The prompt is "He reluctantly handed the key over".  That's kind of what i'm doing now.  My spouse has spent nearly fifteen years serving in the Army, and I had for a few of those years myself.  He's medically retiring now and we're starting a new life in Denver.  it's bittersweet and scary, especially since in Alaska we had finally found the place I thought was going to be our forever home.    We plan to come back one day, but in the mean time I've been a wreck getting ready to hand the keys to my beautiful home over to someone else and hope that the memories they create here will be as good as the ones I had.  This also means that I'll be missing out the next round or two of won hundred word wednesdays since I'll be in the middle of the Canadian wilds somewhere trying in vain to remember the conversion rate.

But there are way too many emotions wrapped up in that for me to do in one hundred words so I took it somewhere else. Let me say in advance--I'm sorry if I make you cry. I made me cry.  I might just be emotional. Who knows.

So without further ado: He reluctantly handed the key over He took one last look around the small house, letting the memories envelop him.  This had been their home.  Where she had cried when she lost her hair beautiful flaxen hair to the chemo and he swore to her that she was still beautiful.  Where he had told her it was okay if she had to leave him, and where he broke down when she had.

This had been their home together and he couldn’t live here without her.  Reluctantly he handed the key to the realtor, wiped a tear from his cheek, and finally laid his wife to rest.

Teaser Tuesday - The Arrival of Aerona

Picture
I always knew Aerona was the name of my villain for the Breaking the Curse series..  It reminds me of birds which is pretty cool because in Celtic lore, Fae often took on the forms of other animals.  If you've ever been to Fairbanks you know what I'm talking about when I mention big freaking ravens.  They're monster huge and if you find your garbage strewn all down the street don't freak. It wasn't bears. it was Ravens.  So this led to this great image of Aerona the Raven.  And if it wasn't Kismet enough, Raven's in Celtic Mythology are associated with War and Battle, things our Male Main Character Liam excelled at, and what drew him to her attention in the first place.  So allow me to let you peek in on the scene where Liam see's the object of his hatred just as hope is in sight. Picture Willow was immune to me.

She would die one day, and I would spend eternity mourning her but in this time, here, now, I had her at my side.  I could love her freely without hurting her, and she could love me of her own free will without being bound to me by magic she couldn’t see. I would spend every moment of her life loving her, protecting her, and making up for the wrongs I had intended to commit against her.

My mind began to quiet when another raven alighted upon a branch in front of me, its shrill cry sending ice skating up my spine.  I stopped dead in my tracks and lifted my gaze, studying the raven as it watched me, it’s shrill cries turning to laughter.

“I should have known.  How long have you been following me?” I growled angrily, narrowing my gaze at the creature.

The raven spread it’s wings and soared into the sky.  It turned sharply back and dove straight at the ground, spiraling faster and faster as it plummeted.  As it moved it grew in size, feathers moving and shifting until it slammed into the soil at my feet, a pile of feathers.

I folded my arms against my chest and glared at it as a statuesque woman emerged from the pile, the feathers arranging and clinging to her, covering her nakedness like a gown as she stood.  Her long black hair gleamed and her dark eyes glittered brightly and I cursed as Aerona stood before me.

“Hello lover,” she purred at me, her thin lips twisting into a grin, exposing her teeth with their sharp points.

Feck me.
