Teaser Tuesday

As always remember that these are unedited, rough, raw and no guarantee that they'll make it in the final draft.

I didn’t even have to hear the accent to know who it was. The way that my heartbeat sped up as his breath tickled my ear and the electricity that crackled along my skin where his hand rested on my hip told me it was Liam. I stiffened immediately, urging my body to be still and not melt against him, hoping my heart beat would slow down and stop pounding loud enough to be heard on campus.
“What do you want Liam?” I groaned, holding my body perfectly still. He was too close to me, pressing me against the table but at least I could hide from his gaze. He was too damn insistent, coming into the shop every day this week and flirting. No matter how many times I declined his advances he persisted and I wasn’t sure whether to be flattered or flat out angry that he wouldn’t take no for an answer.
His low chuckle send a jolt through me straight down into my core and I bit my lip to stifle any sound that might encourage him. The buttery smooth of his leather gloves slid over my bare arms and I shivered.
“Just you Willow.”
“Well I’m not up for grabs so if you don’t mind?” He released my arm and stepped back and I ignored the feeling of loss that flooded me. I slid past him and turned to glare at him. His brown eyes danced, completely void of any regret. Not that I was surprised. Liam didn’t seem like the type to do regret which was just one more thing to add to my list of reasons why I avoided guys like him.
I glanced down at the case near his feet and looked back up at him in surprise.
“You play the guitar?”
Liam winked at me and held up his hands, spreading his fingers wide. “What can I say?” he grinned mischievously. “I have magic fingers.”
I groaned and rolled my eyes. “Are you capable of opening your mouth without sounding like a walking cliche or do you just sit around all day thinking of things to say to get under my skin?”
“When I think of you Willow it isn’t your skin I’m getting under…”
I just shook my head and turned to walk away.
“Ah love, I was just having a bit of fun with you is all.” His reached out and caught my arm, pulling me back towards him until I was nearly pressed against his chest. He slid a finger under my chin and lifted my face until my gaze met his. His eyes were serious when they looked down at me, unguarded. “I’m not used to having to try so hard to capture the attentions of a woman. I tease you because I’m nervous. I don’t mean to offend. You’re an intimidating woman.”
I ran a hand through my hair and tore my gaze from his, forcing my gaze over at the rapidly filling tables as I took a step back, putting some space between us. “I don’t like that kind of teasing Liam. I’ve dated guys like you before and it never ends well. Why don’t you find a girl who doesn’t want to punch you every time you open your mouth?”
His mouth curved into a wicked smile and his eyes danced merrily. “Where’s the fun in that?”

Distant Desires Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received a copy of Distant Desires in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this story with high expectations simply because Cambria Hebert herself has set the bar high. She consistently delivers well written, enjoyable stories with lovable characters and a fast paced plot. I want to say that this delivered 100% but there's only so much that can be delivered in a serial novella so I'll withhold commentary on character development until the end of the series.
I will tell you that I'm still on the fence with this book. The character is likeable enough so far, and the secondary characters leave me longing to explore them more. The real obstacle for me of course wasn't the abduction itself, but forcible sexual acts without consent. I get it, she winds up enjoying it, longing for it, dreaming about it etc. but it was personally hard for me to read through a scene where she was basically pinned down while an alien whose face she can't even see "experimented" on her. I'm intrigued to see where the story goes after this because after that obstacle itself, it's clearly consensual and erotic and the ending, while predictable is still enough to make you want to read the next.
So four stars for writing ability, good characters and an interesting premise. I will however recommend that anyone who on any level is still suffering through the after effects of a sexual assault not read this book as it might be upsetting. I can pretty much guarantee that was NOT the author's intent from reading the whole story but forewarned is forearmed.

Teaser Tuesday
The problems I have with characters some times is that I start off with this idea of who they are, and I run with it. Then about halfway through they're resisting and I'm over here like

So in this scene you get to see some of the relationship between the main character Willow, and her best friend Bryce. We all have that one best friend who will always have our back. Someone we've got history with that you know if someone tried to hurt you, they would cut a b***h. Enjoy.

“Sometimes,” I admitted. “I know that’s not the only reason but I think it has a lot to do with it.”
His eyes flashed and he shot me a dirty look. “That has nothing to do with it Willow. You’re my best friend. I’m here because I want to be.”
“Then why the hell are we fighting?”
“Because you have shitty taste in men and I don’t feel like watching you offer yourself up to get hurt again?”
“You’re one to talk about hideous taste,” I scoffed. “You’re the one who dated Teenie Bailey. She let you give her all your birthday candy and then ran off with Mikey Evans as soon as you did.”
He laughed loudly, his features softening. “Oh my god. We were seven years old Willow, and you broke her nose at recess and got detention for your trouble. When are you going to let that go?”
“When she apologizes,” I insisted. Bryce dropped back on to the couch next to me and leaned his head on my shoulder.
“I doubt she even remembers my name,” he smiled.
“Yeah but I’m sure she remembers mine.” We laughed together and all the tension in the room dissipated until we were resting in easy silence again.
So this is where you tell me what you think and feed my hungry author ego. :D Happy Tuesday!

Indie Author Friday

The basic premise is that Samantha (aka Sam)'s whole world has just gone to seed. She comes home one day to find her mom tossing their stuff in boxes and telling her that she's basically been skeeving on her Dad with the rich James Kade, and now the two of them are off to live it up in the Kade Mansion. To make matters worse, her best friends are bitches, her boyfriend is just as skeevy as her Mom and there are two McHottie Kade brothers who are equal doses of Delicious and Dangerous. Sam's going to have to deal with losing her Dad, losing her friends, and for all intents and purposes her Mom all in one fell swoop. I have to hand it to the girl, she develops a serious running addiction (which bothered the hell out of me, but for those of you who aren't aware, exercise science and nutrition science are kind of my bag so when she's talking two hours of running when she's upset to numb her up my brain goes right to how are you not a frigging stick from losing all your backup fat storage and how are you avoiding blowing out your knees and bones with epic shin splints? But I digress). I frankly would have lost my shit at that point and gone Linda Blair on everyone. But Sam is in luck because in the end she gains a better family than the one she's lost. Mason and Logan, the dangerously sexy Kade brothers and their partner in crime Nate have taken her under their wing. The Subsequent books continue to follow this unorthodox family through the fallout for some of their choices and are just as good, if not better, than the first.
I freaking loved this series myself for a couple of reasons. First because it's always a good reminder to see that the other half live lives just as jacked up as the rest of us, probably more so since money makes people targets. The family dynamic is real and the frustration and anger that Sam experiences is legitimate and accurately portrayed. Books should make you feel. Whether you're laughing, crying or chucking your book (not your iPad I hope) at the wall because you're so frustrated. Good books linger with you and that's what this one does to me. Plus I love Logan, even with his hyena laugh. I can't help it, he had me at Ass skirts and Cupcakes. ;)

Trailer Thursday
First up is my good friend Cameo Renae's book trailer for ARV-3. It was produced by Timid Monster, a fantastic indie company out in Tennessee who are also working on a short film based on the same book.
You can get your hands on this dystopian YA novel here Another amazing trailer, also by Timid Monster, is Few Are Angels by Inger Iversen. This particular trailer is up for some awards at the UtopYA convention, and once you've seen it you'll understand why. You can grab this book for FREE here
For those of you who want something a little more adult, you should check out the fantastic D.L. McDermott's Cold Iron from Pocket Star Books. You can get your hands on this amazing book here. This is what I'm going to leave you with today. How do you guys feel about book trailers? Do they ever make you really want to buy a book or do you watch them for joy later? What's been your favorite book trailer ever?

Wonhundred Word Wednesday
A discussion about a recent attempted murder and the events surrounding it came up between friends. Someone remarked how horrible it was that in the years to come the names of the monsters that committed the crime will be remembered, but not the name of the victim. I feel the complete opposite.
In my view allowing the victim to remain nameless is a blessing. In the years to come she can hopefully go on with her life without being confronted daily with the title Victim. Because that's not what she is. She's not a victim of these events, she's a survivor. Labeling someone with the title Victim keeps them in that moment in time, someone to be pitied. She isn't to be pitied, she's a survivor. Anyone who survives to live another day, anyone who chooses not to just lay there and die deserves something better than Victim, and from this thought, I knew what I wanted to write.
Of all the years I've lived here, I've never once called this place home. The latch clicked on my suitcase and I couldn’t suppress a smile at the sound. It was finally time. I’d waited so long for this day to come, ready to make my escape into the world, free from the nightmares birthed within these walls, free from the monsters and memories that lingered here.
Of all the years I’ve lived here, I’ve never once called this place home. I’ve been called a lot of things because of this house. Victim. Prey. Lost Innocent.
But I’m none of those things. Now that I’m leaving this house I’m taking a new name.
Survivor.

Wonhundred word wednesday
What can I say? I'm a creator of fictional worlds. Being verbose comes with the territory.
So these little stories are great for me and have gone a long ways towards making me a better writer. "No matter what you hear, no matter how badly you want to, do NOT open your eyes." "No matter what you hear, no matter how badly you want to, do NOT open your eyes."
No mortal could look upon the true face of a god without consequence. When Eros himself had come to me, it was the only thing that he had demanded of me.
But the sound of his voice was like hearing the finest music, it sang to me, beckoning me. I had to see his face.
Slowly, I opened my eyes and the look of betrayal and hurt in his eyes before he disappeared crushed me.
It was the last thing I ever saw.

I'm also getting messages from friends and readers crying about the length because they say it's a tease because it makes you want more. I realize a great deal of this has to do with my style of flash fiction. Many of mine sound like story starters, stories where you want to know what happens next! so when you tell me that I'm driving you insane and you **NEED** more, it just says I'm doing my job right.
hehe.

What they don’t show is Prince Charming riding off into the sunset with a housemaid, or in my case, a skanky secretary who thinks she’s just won the lottery on her knees.
Love is a ticking time bomb and Disney can kiss my ass.

The truth about love
The truth about love is that it’s all a lie. A lifetime of Hollywood propaganda and fairy tales will try to convince you that true love is out there if you just wish hard enough for it; that everyone has one true love that will walk in, save the day and love you for happily ever after.
What they don’t show is Prince Charming riding off into the sunset with a housemaid, or in my case, a skanky secretary who thinks she’s just won the lottery on her knees.

Wonhundred Word Wednesday
So for those who are new, an amazing group of authors and I get together every week with a single writing prompt and have to come up with a one hundred word story. Then we share the love and see how much it changes from person to person. This is pretty rough on me because I like using words, and 100 is pretty limiting. You find a box in the attic that isn't yours.
I groaned and dropped the box on the dusty attic floor, sending motes dancing through the air. Cleaning out Mom’s attic was not how I wanted to spend the day but someone had to do it. A lump formed in my throat but I swallowed it down and pulled open the box. It was full of baby things from my adoption and a packet of photographs
My older sister Alice in a hospital gown smiled at the camera, holding a newborn baby. Confused, I turned it over and read the inscription.
Alice and Ginny.
My sister was my birth mother.
