The First Ten days…

I dedicated

I dedicated “Between Black and White” to my Mom and Dad.

“Between Black and White” released on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, and the last ten days have been a whirlwind!  On Thursday, March 17th, we had a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day book launch at U.G. White Mercantile in my hometown of Huntsville, Alabama with Books-A-Million selling the books and Old Town Beer Exchange providing the refreshments. It was an incredible night catching up with family, friends, colleagues and fans of the stories.  All total, BAM sold approximately 170 books.  Special thanks go out to Derrick Young and U.G. White for hosting a wonderful event, to BAM for making the sales and signing process smooth and efficient and to Bill Fowler and everyone at Old Town Beer Exchange for bringing such awesome beer and wine.  Also, a huge debt of gratitude to my wife, Dixie Bailey, sister in law, Christi Davis League, friends, Bill and Melanie Fowler and Adam Campbell for helping with setup.

On Monday, March 21st, our book tour went south for Spring Break with a signing on the porch at Sundog Books in Seaside.  It is hard to beat the scene and foot traffic in Seaside, and we sold 31 books all the while catching up with friends and family. Special thanks to my longtime friends, James Drake, Walker and Shelly Cagle, Terry and Brooke Edmondson, Mark and Julie Hunter, Casey Jernigan King, Graham Burgess and Amy Creech for coming to the event.  Also, a big shout out to my father in law, Dr. Jim Davis, his wife Janie, and my sister in law, Christi Davis League, for being a part of the signing.

On Thursday, March 24th, we headed to Rosemary Beach for a signing at The Hidden Lantern Bookstore.  Though the weather was rainy and breezy, we still had a wonderful day, selling 19 books despite the weather and meeting a lot of new fans of the series.  It was fun seeing our friends, Steve and Christy Clark McDonald from Arab, Alabama.  The Hidden Lantern is truly a hidden jewel of a store and owner Diane Carvalho and her entire staff were incredibly accommodating. Diane even found my five year old daughter’s missing doll!  Such a fun time!

So far, ten days in, “Between Black and White” is doing great and has risen to #2 on Amazon’s bestseller list for legal thrillers.   And in this case, being #2 is ok, because I kind of like the #1 book…Ha!  Stay tuned for more updates.

Check out the cover to Between Black and White!

Between Black and White coverI am excited to share the cover for Between Black and White, the sequel to The Professor!

I really love how it turned out. I especially like the southern courthouse with balcony, which is reminiscent of the courtroom in Pulaski, Tennessee where much of the story will take place.  Between Black and White is slated for publication on March 15, 2016, but can be pre-ordered on Amazon now at the following link:  http://www.amazon.com/Between-Black-White-McMurtrie-Thrillers-ebook/dp/B013FS57KG/ref=pd_sim_351_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0M82GB3295YY88G4EEDS&dpID=undefined&dpSrc=sims&preST=undefined

Stay tuned for updates as we move closer to publication.  Just six months away!

Cumberland School of Law Visit!

Me with Dean Henry Strickland and Cassandra Adams

Me with Dean Henry Strickland and Cassandra Adams

I am sorry I have been away from the website for so long!  The last few months have been a crazy and exciting time for me.  First of all, I have now (finally!) finished the first draft of Between Black and White, the sequel to The Professor.  I am currently working on revisions to this story, which will take Tom and Rick to Pulaski , Tennessee to help out their old friend, Bocephus Haynes.  I am very excited about this story, and can’t wait to see what it looks like after the revisions are finished.

As always, I enjoyed talking about The Professor with new people.

As always, I enjoyed talking about The Professor with new people.

Anyway, a lot of great things have been happening with The Professor and I hope to udpdate everyone in the next few days, starting with today’s entry about my fantastic trip to Cumberland Law School on January 22, 2015 to speak to the Cumberland Book Club.  This event actually hatched during my signing at the Alabama State Bar Annual Meeting in Destin back in July.  During that great event, I had the pleasure of meeting Cassandra Adams, the director of the Cummunity Mediation Center and Public Service Program at the Cumberland School of Law.  Cassandra purchased a signed copy of The Professor, and emailed me a few days later, telling me how much she enjoyed the story.  Then, a few weeks after that, Cassandra told me about the Cumberland Book Clubs program, where faculty members at Cumberland choose several books to read each year and students and faculty get together for a discussion of that book.  Much to my delight, Cassandra indicated that she had chosen The Professor as her selection!  Even better, she asked that I speak to the book club after time had been allotted for them to read the book.

On January 22, 2015, my wife Dixie and I (and our four year old daughter Allie) came to Birmingham for this event, which was held in the Friendship room at the Cumberland School of Law library.   This event had special significance for Dixie, as Cumberland School of Law is located on the campus of Samford University, where Dixie graduated from college.

Anyway, there were approximately twenty to thirty people in attendance, including the Dean of the law school, Dean Henry Strickland.  I had a wonderful time discussing the story of how The Professor came to be published, and also giving a few sneak previews about Between Black and White.  I especially enjoyed the question and answer session.

Cassandra gives me a plaque commemorating The Professor's selection for the book club.

After the talk, I signed copies of The Professor and was delighted to receive a signed copy of “From Maverick to Mainstream, Cumberland School of Law, 1847–1997″ by Cumberland law professors David J. Langum and Howard P. Walthall.  Also, Cassandra gave me a wonderful plaque commerating The Professor’s inclusion as a 2014 Cumberland Book Clubs selection.

Lastly, I can’t help but add that Cassandra actually brought Professor cupcakes to this event, which were out of this world.  We could not have asked for a better day!

Book Club Fun!

This was my first book club road trip! Felix’s Fish Camp in Mobile. Great group of ladies!

It has been so exciting to see book clubs choose The Professor!  Since coming out this past January, at least fifteen book clubs have picked The Professor as their book of the month.  From Wadsworth, Ohio to Pawley’s Island, South Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia and almost every corner of Alabama, I have been delighted to hear from book clubs who have enjoyed reading The Professor.

I was a suprise guest at my friend, Leslie Comer’s, book club!

Several of these clubs have requested that I attend their meeting to discuss the book, and I can’t tell you how much fun that has been.  From my trek to Mobile in early August to a trip to Stone Bridge Farms in Cullman in late September to several book clubs in my hometown of Huntsville, it is such a thrill to interact with readers of the story and I am always surprised and intrigued by the questions that are asked.   Here are a couple favorites that keep popping up–Who was the inspiration for the character of Tom McMurtrie?  (The answer is that no one person from my life is Tom; however, Tom has a lot of my father in him and was also inspired by my Evidence professor from law school and trial team coach and then there is certainly a fictional component).  Another favorite question is what will book two, Between Black and White, be about?  (Well…remember that “unfinished business” Bocephus Haynes mentioned at the end of The Professor…)  Those are just a couple.  Such fun to hear what readers think and feel about the story!  In the weeks ahead, and as I start to wrap up the first draft of Between Black and White, I hope to explore more reader questions on the blog.

Anyway, a huge thank you to all of the book clubs that have chosen my story to share with their friends!
