Out and About with Garland and Gould
I'm doing what has to be the most uniqueinterview I've ever taken part in. Come see me at Garland and Gould. What greatfun! I'm still laughing as I send this. The dynamicpair (or is it crazy ladies?) of L. J. Garland and Debbie Gould joined me for acruise on the deck of Sea Falcon as Ianswered their questions and we discussed the adventures of the ship’s captain inthe novel
Windmaster
.
As proof that not only writers put their characters into trouble, Debbie andL.J. wrote me into a corner and asked what I would do in the followingsituation.
You walk into a saloon and order a drink. Someone behindyou says, "You ain't from around here." When you turn around, youfind everyone in the bar is pointing a gun at you. All you have is a ballpointpen and a Bic lighter. What do you do?
Hope you can take a few minutes to pop in, say hello, and see how I escaped. The URL is http://garland-and-gould.blogspot.com/2012/04/guest-interview-with-helen-henderson.html . Helen

Saint Patrick’s Day
Whether it was the milder winter than normal or the lack ofsnow, but this year an unusual excitement seems to surround the day everyonebecomes Irish. On a Friday night when we would normally be kept home by the weather, thirty people attended an ‘after hours’ concert of celtic music by Heather Mulvey at the Matawan Aberdeen Public Library.
A concert by Trinity at the Middletown Public Library brightened theweekend. It is always interesting to see the same group in a different setting. In the library for St. Patrick’s Day the music featured traditional tunes that youmight hear in a Dublin pub such as Wild Mountain Thyme and Danny Boy. A far different feel from theintimate setting of a historic house for a Christmas musicale where I’ve seenthe group perform in the past.
I have to admit, both were quite enjoyable... and educational.
As a writer you never know where the next storyline may come from or whatthoughts a given song lyric might inspire. The muse danced to the beat of the highspirited music and in no time a scene that had bedeviled me for days leapedonto paper. More in the category of six-degrees of connection, the uieleanpipes reminded me of another tune--one from the American War Between theStates. You might ask what would St. Patrick’s Day have to do with the CivilWar. Besides young men coming over from Ireland and fighting in the conflict,Gary Owen, which I’ve heard played at every St. Patrick’s Day parade I’ve everattended, was the regimental song of the Seventh Cavalry, the ill-fated lastcommand of General George Armstrong Custer. And is on the soundtracks of manymovies as the cavalry rides along.
Music can shift more than moods or set toes to tapping. In adeadlocked mind, it can set the thoughts free for the story to be pursued, captured, and maybe even someday, published.
HappyWriting. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day.
Helen
PS - Join the authors of Burst Books on March 28th at 8:00EST for a virtual party. Stop by for free gifts. And as an added surprise, the unveiling of the cover for DragonDestiny. Coming May 2012.

Out and About - Middletown NJ, Reprise
Although a writer's life can be asolitary one, it does not always need to be so. Members of the New JerseyAuthors' Network work together to bring multi-author programs to librarys, suchas the Middletown Public Library (Middletown, NJ). On Saturday, February 18th,six local authors led a fun, informative discussion on different approaches towriting, getting published, and the various options available to writers intoday's market. Along with myself, Jon Gibbs, J.B. DiNizo; Walt Ecklof; Jim J.J. Lair and E. F. Watkins sat in front of the table, What made the day fun wasthat the crowd of over 30 attendees was attentive and energetic. No rottenproduce was thrown.
Just as their genres vary, eachpresenter brought their own experiences to the talk. Gibb's debut novel, Fur-Face, a middle grade fantasy forboys from Echelon Press, was nominated for a Crystal Kite Award. E. F. Watkinsspecializes in paranormal suspense, and since 2003 has published six novelswith Amber Quill Press LLC. Ecklof is the author of The Last Celtic Angel. DiarySecrets by J. B. Dinizo is a sweeping epic begins after World War II andflashes back to events during the Civil War. The genres I presented wereromance (Recov in Romance of My Dreams 2),western (Ambush Luck in DreamspellGoddess. Although I wore street garb not the cowboy hat and duster of Jessie Treon under whose name I write westerns. And of course, not to be forgotten under pain of sword and magic, fantasy was ably represented at the event by Captain Ellspeth and Lord Dal of Windmaster.
A special thank you to the librarystaff for making it such a fun day and being such gracious hosts.
For those who missed it, another panelwill be held at the Old Bridge Public Library on March 31st. Maybe we'll seeyou there. Details can be found at http://www.njauthorsnetwork.com .

Experiences on Blog Talk Radio
I want to thank everyone who lurked and listened to the program on Windmaster at Other Worlds of Romance on Blog Talk Radio. Host Linda Mooney brings southern charm (she lives in a small south Texas town near the Gulf coast) and is adept at easing a guest's nerves and making the night fun. Linda writes romance with a fantasy or science fiction flair. With ten consecutive #1 best sellers, she was named Whiskey Creek Press Torrid's 2009 Author of the Year, and is a 2011 Epic Ebook "Eppie" Award Winner for Best Erotic Sci-Fi.
Aside from a blip when giving an anecdote about reader's reactions to Windmaster, the night was a success. People listened to the live feed, and there were no hecklers. As far as the blip, the description I used of people's reaction saying Windmaster kept them up at night until they finished the book came from just after the book was released. And I implied the attribution not only came from a solitary reader, but one who had a vested interest. That early opinion has since been echoed by the majority of readers. NOTE TO SELF: periodically review all promotional material to keep updated and in sync.
One advantage to radio, tomatoes clog the telephone lines. And with the current state of matter transfer, people need to physically be present to throw rotten produce. Blog talk radio is even less intimidating, there is only you and Linda on the phone (at least if no one asks questions, that is). You can sit in comfortable clothes on the floor with a glass of wine. If you're not a night owl, archived programs mean you can listen at your convenience.
To prepare for the big night, be sure to print out and practice reading your excerpt. Enlarging the print and a ruler helps you keep your place. Just as important to have at hand is taglines and blurbs for your upcoming works (or items already released) and, a list of your links to things such as your blog, website, and of course, your publisher. A print out of the list means you don't have to try to remember them under pressure, and that you won't turn a hyphen to an underscore, or put an @ where it is a period.
