135 - Fall of Empires; An Analysis
I couldn't continue hiding in bed, however much I wanted to but I eased back into my studies and my ceremonial duties. I had another missive from Sinimas. The city he reported from was so far into the Empire that I cringed. "There are rumours of mysterious 'flying monsters' in the Alliance, or 'flying mechanisms' of some kind, though these are patently mythical, there is something odd about

Kyrus 10 - Bee Flies Home
Mariush stopped on the wind threshold of Mother's Loggia and smiled to herself under triple veiling. Just as she wore the extremely formal second veil, that covered her hair and half way down her back, and the third and final gossamer covering as thin and light as a whisper of wind over her head falling all the way to her feet, to honor her patron and her Mother --- Mother, knowing

134 - A race that Arko has not yet begun
The days seemed gray to me. I put it down to still recovering from my illness. I saw the chained Haian one more time but it was in Father's presence. He brought his gold-chainer to me Himself and settled grandly into one of my bedroom salon chairs and kept an eye on the obviously dangerous healer. It made me want to vomit all over again, holding out my wrists to him. He surreptitiously patted

Kyrus 9 - Deep Desert Whistle
With half a dozen people bustling around the steamy kitchen, the scent of soap overtaking the smell of cooking, the big job was finished in a short enough time that they could all sit for a moment and try the new sweet Brak had come up with, just for his helpers, despite the worsening weather. After all, no one would have to let go any of the lines to get into a tunnel and home.

Kyrus 8 - Friends at Dinner, plus dishes
Chere readers... I have a parent-teacher conference tonight and a word swap... it's been a rough day so here's some more Kyrus. Enjoy! When the beer arrived, Haraklez did as well, sliding in to sit beside Werfas. Her veil was almost translucent and Kyrus found himself watching the half-shadow of her upper lip, even as he scrambled to put his own veil on, though he hadn't finished eating. "What

133 - "I would set them free"
(Chevenga's speech in its entirety is written by Karen Wehrstein, my thanks for being allowed to quote it.)__________________There was a lot of confusion but it was distant, someone screaming about poison, someone else bellowing for the Haian. All of it was distant and covered in fuzzy gray fog. Haian? There were no Haians in Arko. I could feel my eyes open, but could only see gray. I

132 - The Gala and Gold Roses
The Truth Award in Journalism gala was, for the first Award, going to stretch over two days, with all the nominees or their representatives being wined and dined by me at Feliras's Glory, while the Presentations would take place on the Platform the next evening with the winner's ball to follow in the Marble Palace. That left the first and second mornings and afternoons for fetes given the

Kyrus 7 - The Communal Kitchen
Honey's was a whiff of home to Kyrus. It was one of the eight communal kitchens, or Ceekits, in Viltaria. The only one set up like a Lainz hostel and the décor was an odd mix of Milar and Lainz, probably because the kitchen master was one of the few expatriate Lainz who had stayed in Milar after the last war. It was also the one place in Milar that Kyrus wasn't the only one wearing

131 - Liars and Hypocrites
I looked at the stack of Pages on the other side of my desk and was so angry I almost couldn't speak. They were all liars. Liars every one. I had crumpled the letter in my fist without realizing it and forced myself to let go. They were hypocrites! I clenched my eyes shut before opening both my fists and my eyes, smoothing out the careful script on my blotter. Why was I so surprised? I
