Second review now up!

Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my second review for today. Check out the opening to my thoughts on Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren:

A young woman’s heart is broken after she reveals a secret. Years later, she comes face to face with the same man who betrayed her, and she must decide whether she’ll give him another chance. Author duo team Christina Lauren tackles the complications of first love coming back around in the dragged-out novel Twice in a Blue Moon.

First of two reviews now up!

Good morning, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted the first of two reviews for you today. Here’s the opening to my thoughts on Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares by Aarti Namdev Shahani:

A journalist shares the story of her immigrant family’s journey from their birth country to the United States. She speaks with frankness about the double standards in the justice system and reveals telling details about the immigration process. As she works through the normal and unique challenges of growing up, she forms a stronger bond with her father. Author Aarti Namdev Shahani shines a light on many of the problems immigrants face in the fairly solid but overly long memoir Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares.

Sharing the work of other writers…

Good morning, Write Edge readers, and happy Monday! Here’s a gray, foggy day in Central Illinois. Fall is definitely settling in.

It’s the start of another week and more of everything you all have come to enjoy about the Write Edge. First, this week’s motivational quote. I think this quote really encapsulates what the best stories and books do for all of us who love to read. It certainly does for those of us who try to write solid fiction:

“Fiction gives us empathy: it puts us inside the minds of other people, gives us the gifts of seeing the world through their eyes. Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.”—Neil Gaiman

Speaking of empathy and putting us square inside other people’s experiences, it’s the last Monday of the month, which means our monthly writers’ showcase. I’m sharing several stories that will take you through a variety of experiences — everything from losing a child to visiting a parent in prison. Read all the stories now on The Write Edge Writing Workshop!

I missed out on sharing a book review last week because of a big deadline, so this week you get not one but two book reviews. First, the review I promised you last week: my thoughts on the memoir Here We Are by Aarti Namdev Shahani. Later on Wednesday, you’ll find out what I thought about the novel Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren. Come back for both of those reviews in the middle of the week on The Write Edge Bookshelf!

Then, on Friday, it’s back to parenting adventures and Growth Spurts. Find them on Growth Chart at the end of the week.

Have a lovely week, readers!

Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest Instagram pics. They include a kind note I received in the mail and the novella of writing friend. Check out the latest pictures, and others, with my handle, @EktaRGarg. You can also go to my Facebook author page for these posts and other fun stuff exclusive to Facebook.

(By the way, I know I owe you all a book review! I was working on a big deadline on Wednesday and couldn’t crank out the review in time. But you’ll get it next week for sure.)

Have a lovely weekend, readers, and for those of you celebrating the Festival of Lights, Happy Diwali in advance!

Rainy days and Mondays…

Hello, Write Edge readers! Here in Central Illinois, it’s a gray, rainy day. I hope some of you are getting some sunshine.

Despite the rain, though, we need to soldier on. For me, that means posting this week’s short fiction and then turning my attention to my novel. I now have a reader who’s waiting for chapters every week. She’s a dear friend who can also be kind of mean when I don’t meet deadlines; never mind that I was the one who set the deadlines in the first place.

Parenting post up!

Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest parenting adventure for you. Here’s a quick excerpt:

More than anything, I tried to soothe away my hurt with a good shampoo and rinse. Because it did hurt. Yes, I’m Thirteen and Eleven’s mother, but I’m also a person. I have likes and dislikes as much as anyone else. I have thoughts and opinions, hobbies and interests.

I have feelings.

Have a great weekend, readers!

Book review now up!

Good morning, Write Edge readers! For a change I get to chat with you first thing in the day. I miss it! :>

I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I share my thoughts on the thriller I Will Make You Pay by Teresa Driscoll. Here’s the opening to my post:

A journalist experiences extreme anxiety when a stalker sends her threatening messages. As the messages escalate in scope and type, she battles her fear as well as the looming questions of who would do this to her and why. Author Teresa Driscoll keeps readers guessing all the way to the last pages of her excellent novel, I Will Make You Pay.

On the road again…

Hello, Write Edge readers! I’m writing this blog post from the car. Still a little incredible that I can reach all of you from inside a moving vehicle (don’t worry, I’m not driving. I’m talented, but even my talents have their limits. :>) Our family traveled for this long weekend to Chicago and are on the way back.

Visiting the city always makes me think about my time there as a graduate student, and sometimes I can’t help wonder what my life would have been like if it had taken a different turn at one point or another. The possibilities; the challenges. The hopes and dreams that might have come from those alternate lives.

It’s one reason why I love my career in this creative field. Through my characters and their life choices, I have the opportunity to experience modes of life that I would never encounter otherwise. Those of you who also follow artistic paths know what I’m talking about.

To that end, here’s this week’s motivational quote:

“I write because I want to have more than one life.”—Anne Tyler

I’ve also posted this week’s short fiction. Because I went with micro fiction this week, I’m not going to give you an excerpt. I would, however, encourage you to check it out on The Write Edge Writing Workshop!

On Wednesday I’ll share a brand new book review with you. Last week saw the release of the thriller I Will Make You Pay by Teresa Driscoll. Find out what I thought of the book in a couple of days on The Write Edge Bookshelf!

Finally, at the end of the week, I’ll post a new segment in my parenting adventures. Find out more on Friday on Growth Chart!

Have a lovely week, readers!

You can find them with my handle, @EktaRGarg, or on my Facebook author page (where there’s other fun stuff too.)

Book review posted

Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Here’s the opening to my thoughts on Scars Like Wings by Erin Stewart:

After surviving a terrible accident, a teenager grapples with going back to high school. Her altered appearance provokes deep anxiety about fitting in and makes her an introvert. With the help of new friends, however, she learns about her true self-worth. Author Erin Stewart offers target readers a predictable storyline with a refreshing take in the solid novel Scars Like Wings.
