And I got to thinking about the 1930s and how we usually only hear about the Depression, the economy, the Dust Bowl, the tremendous difficulty... But there was also incredible art, inspiration, women's rights on the rise, and innovation smack in the middle of the Depression. In 2001, I witnessed first hand how New York responded to our immense tragedy: with compassion, sacrifice, art, innovation, humor, sheer grit...and cocktails. Sounded a lot like the 30s. That's the story I wanted to tell. So my main character, Lane Sanders, aide to Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, embodies all that gumption. (less)

Don't look around too much at others' success. We hear too often about the "lottery winners" who find success quick n easy, and it can be utterly paralyzing. Keep writing, don't give up, your voice is unique, keep growing and learning. Even when life is complicated - it's always complicated - find ways to write even if it's just a few minutes a day or a few hours a week. Your work will create appetite for more - and your work compounds. DO NOT WAIT to start writing. Don't wait for that imaginary 10 week beach retreat to write your novel. It won't happen. Do it now and stay strong. The biggest successes happened after long toil that deepened their writing - and deepened their souls. And it was worth it. (less)

Behind the Scenes - Inspiration of The Silver Gun

I love history and "living" it through historical fiction. So often we learn about history in pockets, and we don't realize what other issues and events were going on at the same time. I felt that way about the Depression era. I thought it was all Dust-bowl and soup lines. But in the big cities, there was SO MUCH MORE going on! It was brilliant, exciting, and innovating. In spite of the Depression Read more of this blog post »
