I drew my girlfriend’s Bio picture for a zine she made for the Boise comics art festival that she’ll be at August 25th and 26th. (the stuff she made for it is some of my favorite comics)

How do you feel about the artwork of Frank Quitely? I've heard people compare him to mobius and one friend even said hed like to see a redraw of The Incal (which is sacrilegious in my opinion) I see mobius in your art and you are my favorite artist current
I really like Quitely’s work. but I don’t see a Moebius comparison, they do such different work. I think Moebius really succeeds at being a personality through his work, he lets himself get away with so much to amuse himself – where for the most part Quitely I see as more of a fantastic technical storyteller. I get less of an obvious persona of his put forth in the same way you get MOEBIUS. Granted a lot of that is just that he doesn’t write most of his work.– the one time I talked to him years ago he said that he was planning on doing more.
The stuff I like in Quitely’s work is his ability to draw such different materials and make them look different. Like how this lady’s hat and shirt and wooden board are all drawn so that you can see that they would feel different to the touch.

I also think he’s really good at showing space and movement in his pages.

Awhile back Jodorowsky had the artist Ladronn redraw a scene from the Incal that Moebius had drawn.
Here’s Moebius

and Ladronn

Even with the heavy Moebius influence on Ladronn’s work It feels completely different. (I guess maybe that was the point?) I don’t quite understand what the point of continuing the Incal without Moebius is– but I also haven’t read the newer stuff– maybe it has a point.
And thanks for the nice words on my stuff, Needless to say Moebius is a HUGE influence on what I do.
I remember having some issues with the Xmen Quitley worked on– But nothing that was his doing. for me it was mostly that they switched up artists on it for no good storytelling reason. They used some excellent fill in guys– Igor Kodey and Jean Paul Leon but without a reason in the story it just takes me out of reading it as one thing.
Also as good of a writer as I think Morrison is, I remember thinking that some of the early stuff was a little self conscious– like in the 1st issue talking about their super hero costumes

But maybe it should be read like an alternate universe xmen where Wolverine didn’t used to go around like–

Also, not to clog up your feeds too much, but I recently updated my webstore with all sorts of goodies (no new copies of Griz Grobus, but definitely more trade paperbacks!) simonroycomics.bigcartel.com
I appreciate the patience with my ceaseless hustling prattle!

Hey Brandon! I’m just getting back in to comics. I only ever picked up your stuff but was wondering what you recommend? I can’t stand mainstream superhero stuff I’ve always been more in to indie books.
There’s lots of great stuff out there–If you’ve read much of what I’ve typed online you’ve most likely seen me talk about some of the work that’s closest to me– but if you haven’t read them, these are some of the books that anyone who likes what I do should love.
James Stokoe has some great books out, ORC STAIN, WON TON SOUP his recent ALIENS series and an amazing Godzilla book he did that spans over 5 or 6 decades of a man’s life.

The amazing Farel Dalrymple has a new series on shelves called PROXIMA CENTARI that I loooveee also his POP GUN WAR series has 2 trades. I’d recommend his book WRENCHIES as a great place to start

Also SIMON ROY who I’ve collaborated with lots (mostly on Prophet) has some great books. his pre-historic shaman story, TIGER LUNG and his distant future cannibal book HABITAT

Matt Sheean and Malachi Ward each have great books of their own but ANCESTOR –is a great place to start with them

Marian Churchland’s BEAST. A modern retelling of Beauty and the beast (and she has a new book on the way)

Moebius Edena – a new printing of some of my favorite work by one of the artists whose work influenced me the most.

Sabertooth swordsman by
Damon Gentry and Aaron Conley- fun fantasy stuff

Paul Pope Heavy Liquid, Pope is another big influence on my work. and HL is one of his best.

I’m sure I’m forgetting lots but these are a few of my go to recommendations that are some of the best comics I know of.

Is the artbook that just got announced the one the inkstuds kickstarters backers are getting?
I’m trying to figure that out with Robin– It might make more sense to make a new zine sized book focused just on the tour (with some newer work done just for it). I’m reluctant to put any more of a wait on what we send out.& that could be done sooner too – let me know if anyone has any thoughts. –
