What're your thoughts on art school? A few years back, I was intent on saving up and going, but a lot of my friends/peers/colleagues advised against it. Like what you said in your last answer, those artists I've spoken too have spent a lot of time sketch b

I feel like me having not gone to school past 6 months of high school really colors my opinion of the whole thing. I the the main advantage of school might be a social one -just being around and meeting other like minded artists. I got my own version of that by just hanging out with a bunch of SVA guys when I lived in NYC.

I think the disadvantage would be putting yourself into debt. I was able to live really lean until I could make money off of what I do. (and I still live pretty close to the bone so me and Marian can take jobs we love, over jobs we have to take)

I just looked up who sent this and I was like —“oh shit it’s Jung! his comics are awesome.” sooo I think you’ll be fine whatever you decide to do.

whats your opinion on Bendis?

At first I thought this read “Bengus” -The old Capcom artist who is a interesting point in art for a lot of people. He’s one of those guys whose influence on other artists I both love and hate— Like you can see his style in Locke or even Marian whose work I love— but it also showed up in a lot of 90’s superhero comics is ways I realllly didn’t like. —I feel like my dislike of purple shadows can be traced back to Bengus— but it does look rad when he does it.

I love how his AVP art looks. that 90’s top knot. —where did that even come from. was there a human who wore their hair like that?

The 90’s was a weird era.

Your figure drawing abilities are pretty impressive; did you spend much time in a figure drawing class, or is it something you've picked up just from drawing everyday?

Thanks a lot. I’ve only been to one figure drawing class— and that was like last year. but I do draw a ton from the world around me and I draw in my sketchbook looking at photos a lot.

Sometimes I think there should be reasons for all the things I draw based on reality. —I don’t always stick to that but I try to at least think about it.

I used to do things like draw white halos around black shapes but, I dropped that when I noticed how little it had to do with reality— and the amazing thing your eye does to fill in shapes even if they’re not defined.

are there any good books on the history of manga that you could recommend?

I really like Frederik L. Schodt's Manga manga: the world of Japanese comics. He wrote a sequel too called Dreamland Japan

grimwilkins:

Prophet Strikefile #2 hit stands this week and my little Prophet strips snuck their way onto the last page! I wasn’t sure how well they would print, but I think they look pretty snazzy.

This book is fabulous, with art by my pals sayunclecomics, simon-roy, mattsheean, malachiward, royalboiler, addisonduke, sandralanz, and xurxogpenalta TO NAME A FEW.
