Okay, after that postI need to change my focus. Hope, even false hope, serves a purpose.

Happy Earth Day, Now Change

A recurrent debate that a particular subsection of the science fiction community regularly engages in attempts to answer the resolve “how will the world end?” I write a good deal of climate science fiction and consequently I have my preferences. On balance, sure, there are plenty of potential dangers to all of humanity. The rise of an incurable super bug or a sucker punch from a big space snowcone would get the job done, but most of these things are only possibilities. Possibilities that are...

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizat...

April 1st is for Haters

This morning I noticed that one of my all time best friends in the world sent me a text. I was driving Aral to school and so left the phone in the little slot on the console until I had a moment (after stopping of course) to read it.

It went like this:

Rat Bastard

So, I sighed … deeply, unbuckled Aral and took him into school. He was happy, and I was trying. Trying to brush this off, knowing that it was going to rub me raw all damn day long.

We went through the school check in routine and I sauntered ba...

I’m celebrating breaking into the top one hundred with the recent release of the top-rated science fiction anthology Doomsday Chronicles. For a limited time only (March 28, 2016 through April 1, 2016) pick up Doomsday and Big Red Buckle for less than a cup of coffee. That’s right, both books for a dollar!

DOOM!

Doomsday is due March 25th, 2016

Due out tomorrow (25th March2016) and early reports are that this is some of the best fiction to be featured in an FC anthology. What I’ve read of it thus far leads me to agree with this summary judgement.

Five lucky people get an Advanced Reviewer Copy as soon as they leave a comment on this post.

Hugo Noms pt 2: The Novellettes

Today I have moved on to Best Novellette nominating.Everyone who is eligible, do this today and help prevent a repeat of last year’s drama by making the voting pool bigger! Yes, yes let’s flush the sadness out of science fiction.

This is also a ham-handed reminder that my eligible novelette, “Ser Pan Comido” (9931 words) is eligible and available for free at the moment.

Ser Pan Comido,” Matthew Alan Thyer, Windrift Books (November 2015)”A determined trio of colonial cast offs are hell bent...

Rainy Day Ride

Rainy Day Ride

Word counts are suffering. The family just survived another freak viral infection, and Iapparently was most vulnerable. Colds suck!

But that’s mostly behind us now and while it’s still months in the future my Colorado Trail trip is starting to loom large in my imagination. The idea of riding over my home state on a fat-bike laden like a rented mule, given my current state of physical fitness, seems a near impossibility at this point. Consequently, I’ve been making time every mo...

My Hugo Noms

I got the easy work done today and it feels good. I nominated for “best novel” category only because I knew, without needing to give it much thought, who I was going to recommend.

The Water Knife,” Paolo Bacigalupi, Vintage (April 5, 2016)
Aurora,” Kim Stanley Robinson Orbit, (July 7th, 2015)
Beacon 23: The Complete Novel,” Hugh Howey, Broad Reach Publishing (September 6, 2015)
Zeroboxer,” Fonda Lee, Flux (April 8, 2015)
The Shepherd’s Crown,” Terry Pratchett, HarperCollins (September 1,...
