Podcasts

From Wikimedia Commons

My earlier post this week made mention of the Functional Nerds podcast, which I have become a regular listener of.

I have begun listening to even more--filling my ears with science fiction this, science fiction that--so I thought I would put in a few links to some of my favorites. Oh, and I put in a few science ones as well.

Any recommendations?

Podiobooks

While listening to a few podcasts, specifically catching up on some of The Functional Nerds, I listened to the June 19th podcast where Nathan Lowell is interviewed. I had not heard of Mr. Lowell, but the gist of it is that he was an early adopter of social media trends and has self-published his Solar Clipper series. In the interview, he mentioned Podiobooks, which is a serialized audio-book

Science Fiction Shows I Love(d)

Like many a sci-fi fan, when I was growing up, I enjoyed a lot of the television science fiction that was on the air. Fortunately, the special effects, stories, and writing have (in general) improved significantly since then. I was thinking of the shows that I have watched over time.... The early formative shows, some of the reboots and new shows. Here's a quick list, though I know I've missed

In Memoriam

A moving tribute to those lost on this day 11 years ago.

Here is a link to a John Adams interview about the piece plus a clip.

Fiction and Poetry: Friends I Have

I am very fortunate to have several friends who have found success in the publishing world, all of who have published novels in the recent past that I have read. I offer the below sampling:

Jared Carter has been writing poems for a while now, and his work continues to amaze me whenever I read it. If I could write poems half this good, I would be happy. Check out A Dance in

As Slow as Possible

Public Domain (from Wikicommons)

Many years ago, I stumbled across an article titled (if I remember correctly): "The Longest Performance in History." It was about the composer John Cage's piece Organ2/ASLSP. On September 5, 2001, in a formerly abandoned church in Halberstadt, Germany a performance of the piece began on a mechanical organ. The opening rest of the composition lasted until

What Is Art?

Public Domain

A friend just the other day sent me an email out of the blue with a link to the Letters of Note website, which I had not heard of before.I recommend checking this site out, because ... well.... because. Seriously, I find letters an interesting read quite often. I am no letter writer, and the practice these days is going out of favor for newer communication styles. One of the

Short Stories

I have never been a great short story reader. I mean, I've read plenty, but like so many Americans, I just do not, as a matter of course, pick up books of short stories and start reading. Note: this lack of reading them resembles in no way my liking of them, which may seem like a contradictory statement but somehow isn't. It's just, I don't know....

I have decided to read more short stories, particularly in the science fiction and mystery categories, primarily because I am very curious how the sci-fi worlds or the mystery plots are created, resolved, completed, etc. So I'll be digging back into my Sherlock Holmes collections, pulling out the Arthur C. Clarke, and rambling through magazines, but are there any recommendations out there? Stories that I simply must read or I am missing out?

So Where Have I Been

As I'm sure you've noticed, my blogging has been seriously curtailed for some time. The short of it is: I focused on other things--writing, reading, teaching, work, re-modeling. Not an excuse of course...just a reason. I will endeavor to be better, even if I put up short posts. So here's wishing myself luck doing that. :)
