TIP: Calculate your daily dose of nature

What is your usual daily dose of nature? A 10 minute walk to the bus stop? Taking the dog out for half an hour? Can you improve on that?

As Autumn creeps into the Northern hemisphere, I’ve collected seven practical tips to help find your tech/nature balance. They’re going out one a day for seven days. This is the second. Please share!

TIP: Pay attention to the sounds of nature

Pay attention to the sounds of nature – birdsong, rustling leaves, weather. Find them in the digital too.

How Nature Documentaries Are Fake

“Everyone loves BBC’s Planet Earth, but how much of it is real?” Watch this thought-provoking video by Simon Cade  @dslrguidance  showing some of the tricks used to create compelling narratives in nature documentaries. Not fake news, but fake nature.

Choose more nature, not less technology

Perhaps you have noticed that digital guilt has become the media’s favourite way to fill an empty column or two? The smallest mention of the dangers of technology is guaranteed to make us shift uneasily as we scroll through our phones and tablets.

Remarks like this, for example, can really sting when you’re doing your best just to get through the day:

Human Spaces – excerpt from Nature and Wellbeing in the Digital Age

Human Spaces is a brilliant resource for information about ‘spaces designed with the human in mind’ so I’m very pleased that they’ve published an excerpt from my new book. Read it here Nature and Wellbeing in the Digital Age | Human Spaces

Publishing a Kindle book, and then a paperback too

Thousands of people have published their own Kindle books and then blogged about the process. I decided to do the same. But this is in no way a definitive guide. It’s just a list of bits of information I picked up along the way and thought ‘that’s useful, I wish I’d known it before’. I’ve added on some notes about a later decision to produce a print-on-demand paperback too.

OUT NOW Paperback edition of ‘Nature and Wellbeing in the Digital Age’

[image error]When I published the Kindle edition of ‘Nature and Wellbeing in the Digital Age, I was quite surprised to find that lots of people I know don’t read e-books at all. They asked for a paperback version and I didn’t have one. But now I do.  It’s on sale at Amazon from today, so if you prefer paperbacks to e-books, now you can get one!

The Biophilia Hypothesis – podcast from Stuff to Blow Your Mind @BLOWtheMIND

A quirky and complicated discussion of biophilia – what it is, why it is, and how it matters. Set aside an hour to just go with the flow as Robert Lamb and John McCormick roam the savannas of biophilic theory. Very enjoyable.

Find it at Stuff to Blow Your Mind: The Biophilia Hypothesis.
