TMR Pension House Review, Tubigon, Bohol, Philippines – Survive Travel

TMR Pension House Review - Front -vie Survive Travel

Reception.

This post is a TMR Pension House review which is found in a small port town called Tubigon on the island on Bohol in the Philippines.

This TMR Pension House review includes pictures, directions, costs and other information which you may or may not find useful.

Check at the bottom of the post if you want the short version of the review.

Cost: 650php / night with fan. 750 with air-con

Address: Pooc Occidental, Tubigon 6329, Philippines

TMR Pension House Review , Tubigon, Bohol, Philippines

First Impressions

It looks like “my kind of accommodation”. Nothing flash about it, but not too dodgy either.

Staff

Very nice lady runs it. Turns out she is also the friend of the place I went to eat at. Small town, go figure.

Size

Good sized room, I was happy with it.

Bed

Bed was comfortable enough, and two pillows.

TMR Pension House Review - Main Room - Survive Travel

Decent sized room and with a work desk.

Bathroom

Good water pressure but no hot water.

Toilet works.

TMR Pension House Review - Bathroom - Survive Travel

The shower hose isn’t long enough to put up into the shower holder. No hot water but everything else was fine.

Location

Good location, in fact it is the reason I chose to stay there.

It was basically the first place I saw coming off the ferry.

But the town is so small that everywhere is going to be a good location.

TMR Pension House Review Tubigon - view - Survive Travel.jpg

View from the roof.

Amenities and Other

Had a little study desk which was great for me.

I opted for the fan room. The fan was good.

Soap, towel and toilet paper provided, but that is about it.

At night vendors sell BBQ on the street out the front.

No WIFI but there is an internet cafe immediately next door.

You can get access to the roof which has a nice view. Actually, the balcony from the room has a decent view also.

The church seems to have mass at 0530am every day, which actually is quite a nice way to wake up. Better than the roosters I’ve been getting everywhere else, although I am sure if I stayed for a couple of weeks I would want the roosters back, just for a change.

TMR Pension House Review Tubigon - view 2 - Survive Travel.jpg

View of the church from the. Nice 0530 wake up call for morning mass.

You can rent a motorbike there. The guy is also very nice. 500php per day which is more than I have been paying at other places but there isn’t much option in Tubigon. There are some guys on the corner that will rent their bike to you for the same price (if you bargain) but they seem dodgy. The TMR Pension House also rents out boats.

No booking site for the TMR Pension House or for any accommodation choice in Tubigon so just rock up and try your luck. I’d be very surprised if nowhere had any rooms, and if for some reason all the choices in Tubigon are booked, just go to the next town.

Getting to TMR Pension House

You can catch the ferry from Cebu directly to Tubigon.

Alternatively, maybe you landed in Tagbilaron, in which case you can catch the bus up to Tubigon which costs 55php and takes about an hour and a half.

Once you are in Tubigon just follow the map below, or ask any local. Tubigon is small, the locals will know most of the accommodation options around.

Constrell Pension House Review , Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines – Survive Travel

Constrell Pension House Review - TV - Survive Travel

Aircon and TV with Cable.

This post is a Constrell Pension House Review which is in Tagbilaran city on Bohol island in the Philippines.

It includes pictures, costs, directions and my personal rants which you may or may not find useful.

Cost: 800php per night is their cheapest room. It has aircon, cable TV and private bathroom.

Address: 25 New Calceta Street, Bohol , 6300 Tagbilaran City, Philippines

I chose to stay at the Constrell Pension House in Tagbiliaran because it was the cheapest thing I could find close to the ferry terminal. It was about a 15 minute walk or 10php tricycle.

Constrell Pension House Review, Tagbilaran

This was the first accommodation I have been to in the Philippines with decent internet.

The room was not huge, but big enough to exercise in.

Constrell Pension House Review - Bedroom - Survive Travel

It has aircon but no fan. Personally I prefer a fan but I know most will enjoy the air-conditioner.

There was a small TV with cable. I watched Mona Lisa’s Smile which I quite enjoyed.

There was no hot water but great water pressure and a working flushing toilet.

Constrell Pension House Review - Bathroom - Survive Travel

The staff were nice.

They had windows but they did not open.

Their kitchen was under maintenance, not that I would have eaten there anyway. There where a few places close by to eat if local fare is okay with you, otherwise go to town (15 minute walk or 10php by tricycle.)

Book your stay at Constrell Pension House in Tagbilaran.

Getting to the Constrell Pension House, Tagbilaran, Bohol

It is walk-able from the ferry (check the map below) or take a tricycle for 10php.

Getting From Siquijor to Bohol, Philippines

Getting from Siquijor to Bohol - Tagbilaron Port 2 - Survive Travel

This post explains getting from Siquijor to Bohol. It also includes costs, pictures and my own personal little rants which may or may not include information you find useful.

I had only spent 2 nights in Siquijor but it is a small island so it was enough for me.

I originally thought I could get a ferry direct from Siquijor to Bohol but as it turns out I had to go through Dumaguette, but it wasn’t much more of a hassle.

Getting from Siquijor to Bohol, Philippines

You can get an Ocean Jet ferry from Siguijor all the way to Tagbilaran in Bohol. It stops for 30 minutes in Dumaguete but you do not need to get off the boat. This is what I had planned to do originally but it doesn’t leave Siguijor until 1330 and I did not want to just hand around for that long.

I had read online that there was another ferry from Dumaguetter to Tagbilaran so I caught the 0900 ferry from Siquijor to Dumaguette. It cost 130php plus 14php terminal fee. It was on a “pump boat” but the ride was not that long.. maybe 60-90 minutes.

Getting from Siquijor to Bohol - Survive Travel

The pump boat ride was fine. Just before they left they got everyone to put on their life vests, but then as soon as they took off everyone just took them off again. I hear boats capsizing is not unusual here and a good majority of Filipino’s/a’s cannot swim. If I was them I would have kept mine on, but I can swim, so I took mine off as well although if we were going down I would definitely put the f*ker back on.)

When I got to Dumaguette I discovered that what i had read on-line was incorrect. I guess the stopped that service, so I had to wait in Dumaguette for the 1500pm ferry, which is the same one that would have left from Siquijor at 1330pm.

Getting from Siquijor to Bohol - Survive Travel

Inside the pump boat from Siquijor to Dumaguette

No harm done though because Dumaguette is more interesting to look around than Siquijor and the town was getting ready for a festival so I saw all the dancers practicing and when to the festival grounds.

The ticket from Dumaguette to Tagbilaran was 700php + 15php terminal fee which makes the total cost of getting from Suqijor to Bohol (Tagbilaran) 859php, where as getting the one from Siquijor “direct” to Tagbilaran would have been about 100php more expensive.

When boarding the Oceanjet Ferry you need to check in to secure your seat (left after the security check). You can also check in your bag which I didn’t know about. The guy just said to leave it under the TV.

It looked as though there was also a baggage hold in the the same place. I wish I knew that before lugging my bag around for that 3 hours.

Getting from Siquijor to Bohol - Survive Travel

Standard transport fares in Tagbilaron, Bohol.

On the ferry they played a movie but unless you sit right in front of the TV you cant hear.

Two hours later and you are in Tagbilaran when there are lots of Tricycle to take you anywhere you want. At many of the ports there is a big sign which tells you the standard tricycle and taxi fares to various places. Take note because they will try to charge you more. Actually, I would not be surprised if even these official signs are priced higher than locals would pay.

Once in Tagbilaran you can bunk up cheap at the Constrell Pension House.

7 Awesome Things to Do in Siquijor, Philippines

things to do in siquijor - Survive travel

Discover 7 awesome things to do in Siquijor. Includes short reviews, directions, pictures and other useful information as well as some (perhaps not so useful) personal ranting.

I went to Siquijor upon recommendation from Peter, the guy that taught me “Filipino Martial Arts” while I was in Moalboal.

While buying the fery ticket I met a nice Candian / Filipina couple so I spent the morning with them “touring” the island via motorbike.

Siquijor is a small island, you can easily drive around it and see most of what there is to see in one day. I only stayed for one day but could have happily stayed another two with casual sightseeing.

7 Awesome Things to Do in Siquijor, Philippines
1. Lazi Convent

Special because it was built in 1887, a time when engineering technology and equipment was non-existent. It was completed in 1891.

2. Old Enchanting Tree

I took a picture of the sign but not the actual tree itself… I have no idea why.

3. Cambugahay Falls

Something I actually intended to see, unlike the first two which I just happen to come across. For me, Cambugahay falls was the highlight if things to do in Siquijor.

4. Salagdoong Beach

The intention was to go “cliff diving” here but we were unable to do it due to low tide.

5. Siguijor Public Market

This is in Siquijor town, near the port, but other towns have there own little version.

Almost every town in the Philippines has a Public Market.

6. Ride Around the Island

You can ride easily ride around the whole island of Siquijor in a day, and that includes stopping to see everything on this list.

Mountain scenery.

Be sure to do some of the coast as well as some of the interior.

7. The Catholic Church

There are old churches all over the Philippines, at least one in each town. This one is across the road from Lazi Convent (#1 on this list of things to do in Siquijor).

Getting To Siquijor

The most common way, and the way I came, is to come from Dumaguette.

There are a number of different services all with different times and prices. I payed 100 and something php for the 1530 boat + 15php terminal fee.

They also post when the service does not run, e.g., 1500pm service is not available on Mondays.

Salagdoong Beach review - siquijor 5 - survive travel

This post is a Salagdoong Beach review which is found on Siguijor Island in the Philippines. It also contains costs, directions, pictures and other useful (or perhaps not so useful) personal opinions..

Cost: It says 10php, but for some reason they charge you 45php and they give you a bunch of tickets which state the various prices and how it added up to 45php. I questioned, got no real answer, and then just accepted it.

Address: On the East side of Siquijor. Closest town is Olang, North of Maria.

Salagdoong Beach Review, Siquijor, Philippines

I had followed a nice Canadian / Filipina couple to the waterfalls and then to what was described to me as cliff jumping into the ocean.

It is true that you can jump into the ocean, but it is not really from cliffs.

I think it would have been great if we could of actually done it, but it was inaccessible due to low tide.

Salagdoong Beach review - siquijor 3 - survive travel

There is a slide there too but it is out of order, probably due to shallow waters.

The actual beach is nice to walk and go for a dip, not that I did.

There is a restaurant there also if you are feeling peckish. I had Halo Halo.

If you are going to jump into the water I suggest you look up when high tide will be.

Cambugahay falls review - Siquijor - swing - Survive travel

This post is a Cambugahay Falls Review which is on a small island in the Philippines called Siquijor. It includes directions, pictures, costs and my personal rants which may or may not contain useful information.

Cost: Free entry but 10php to park your motorbike and if you use the swing the locals will expect a tip.

Address: Near the town of Lazi on Siquijor island in the Philippines.

Cambugahay Falls Review, Siquijor, Philippines

Cambugahay Falls was the highlight of my time in Siquijor.

The ride in was very scenic through the mountains and along the coast.

When we arrived we were the only ones there (I had met a nice Canadian / Filipina couple on the ferry so I joined them for the day).

Cambugahay Falls review - siquijor - 4 survive travel

The water was beautiful.

You can get a coconut for 25php. Drink the juice then have the lads cut it open so you can eat the flesh.

There are three levels but the bottom one is the one most people swim in.

Cambugahay Falls review - siquijor - 2 - survive travel

You can swing in. I expected it to be deeper but discovered otherwise when I hit the bottom, but no harm done.

You can also get underneath the water fall which reminded me of Hooker Falls in North Carolina (Dupont Forrest).

The water was lovely to swim in. Not cold at all, just the perfect temperature.

I only did the swing once but other did it a few times and so the “guides” requested a tip.. fair enough.

Das Traum Guest House Review, Siquijor, Philippines – Survive Travel

das traum guest house review - siquijor - survive travel

This post is a Das Traum Guest House Review, Siquijor, Philippines. It includes directions, pictures and other information.

Cost: Just over $8 /night when booked through Agoda, but only 350php when paying directly, however, if you do not book you run the risk of no availability.

Address: Pangi, Siquijor, Siquijor Island, Philippines

I chose the Das Traum Gust House because it was close to the ferry terminal.

Quite a large room, but maybe they gave me a bigger one because they didn’t have anything else available.

Getting to Das Traum Guest House

A tricycle from teh ferry should only cost a maximum of 20php. If you really want to you can bargain them down to 15 or 10.

Alternatively you can walk there in about 15 minutes.

A third option is to hire a motorcycle, which you will probably want to use to get around the island anyway. Out the front of the ferry terminal they are 300php for 24 hours. Ask for a helmet if you want one.

He tried to give me one with a broken fuel gauge but I ended up taking the one with a broken speedometer. IMO knowing fuel is more important than knowing speed.

4. Take a tricycle to the Dumaguette – Siquijor port.

5. Catch the ferry to Siquijor.

Getting from Moalboal to Siquijor, Philippines

The first thing you need to do is get to Dumaguette. To do that you can catch a bus out the front of the Moalboal Market. Catch the one going South.

If you are starting from Pangasama (as I was) then you can catch a tricycle to the bus stop for 50php. Do not pay anymore than 50php. One of them tried to charge me 150php and told me it was the normal fare, but just ask someone else and tell them 50php.

Getting from Moalboal to Siquijor (12)

Boarding the ferry to Dumaguette.

Getting from Moalboal to Dumaguette

From across the road from the Moalboal market catch the yellow Ceres bus heading south and get off at Bato.

Once in Bato (just over an hours drive) catch a tricycle to Liloan port. It cost me 25php.

From Liloan port catch the ferry to Dumaguette. It cost 62php which included the terminal fee and wasn’t a long trip, maybe 60-90 minutes.

Getting from Moalboal to Siquijor (8)

Liloan Port.

Getting From Dumaguette to Siguijor

Once in Dumaguette you will need to get to the other ferry terminal to get to Siquijor. Jump on the fullest jeepney you can. You can put your bag on the roof if needed. You want to get the fullest one otherwise you’ll have to wait until it fills up.

Getting from Moalboal to Siquijor (6)

The Jeepney wll drop you about a 5-10 minute walk from the ferry terminal. Just tell teh driver that is where you want to go and he should tell you when to get off. The jeepny ride is 11php.

Getting from Moalboal to Siquijor (5)

Then are a number of ferries which go to Siquijor at different times of the days. I did notice that some of their routes are closed on certain days .e.g, no 1500pm trip on Monday’s.

Getting From Moalboal to Siquijor (1)

The cost of the ticket differs a little depending on which ferry you catch. I payed 130php + the terminal fee of 15php.

11 Awesome Things to Do in Moalboal, Philippines

Lion Dive Centre Review - 1 - Survive Travel

Discover 11 awesome things to do in Moalboal, Philippines.

This post of things to do in Moalboal also includes short reviews, directions, pictures and other useful information as well as some (perhaps not so useful) personal ranting.

I spent about two weeks in Moalboal and it was awesome.

The good thing about staying in one place for a little while, instead of just “passing through”, is that you get to make some good friends. I think I was pretty much a local by the time I left.

Of course it helps that Filipinos speak English and are super friendly.

11 Awesome Things to Do in Moalboal, Philippines
1. Snorkelling

If you are staying in Pangasama then there is amazing snorkelling right there in the ocean. There’s probably a few good spots but one I know of for sure is out the back of Lions Scuba Diving Center. Swim out a little bit (less then 50 meters) and there is a big drop with loads to see.

Another good snorkeling spot not far from is White Beach (#11)

Awesome things to do in moalboal

2. Scuba Diving

I had no idea until I got there, but Moalboal is pretty much a dive town. A good chunk of westerners there are divers. Also, the diving is quite good there and you can get you dive certificate for a fraction of the cost of most countries.

Not only is it cheaper in the Philippines, but in Moalboal it is cheaper than in other places in the Philippines.

It would have been a waste not to do it while I was there so I did an open water dive course with Lion’s Dive Centre.

Awesome things to do in moalboal

3. Learn Filipino Martial Arts

The whole reason I came to Moalboal in the first place was to learn Filipino Marital Arts for a couple of weeks (Arniss and Kali). As it turned out I didn’t look at the website properly so what was learned was not by any means authentic. Actually, it turned out to be much, much better, but I wrote a whole blog post on it so I won’t go into detail here.

Regardless of my experience, there are people who do teach authentic Filipino styles here, but if you want to learn something street effective instead then do the one I did.

Awesome things to do in moalboal

4. Canyoneering

This is something I got offered to do numerous times but decided it was not worth it. The best offer I got was 1500php and the tour goes for about half a day. It includes transport but not food.

5. Bar Hopping

If you are staying in Pangasama Beach (which I was) then there is quite a good variety of little bars to check out, most with restaurants attached that make quite good food although you will be paying much more than at the roadside eateries, but if you want western fare then I’m sure you wont mind forking out the 200-300 php (average price of a western meal).

Bar staff are always friendly as are the locals including males, females and lady boys.

Most have free wifi and a few have free pool tables. Chilli’s even has a tournament every Wednesday night.

On Saturday night there is a disco which I did check out but I’m not really a night-club type of person. It is a standard club experience.

Oh, and the most important thing about bar hopping… the beer is cheap at around 50php for a San Miguel (the local drop). Of course all liquors and mixes are available. everywhere.

Awesome things to do in moalboal

6. Motorcycle Through the Countryside

On my day off training I went for a long ride. My objective.. besides just cruising around, was to hit up a few spots including the Kawasan waterfalls (next item). I got a late start and ended up on a bit of an adventure taking the long way home and even going off road (wrong turn) at night whilst running out of fuel.

Obviously I got back okay and I seen some awesome scenery on the way, especially through the mountains where whole communities living in bamboo hut on the side of the mountains!

I am not much of a rider but these bikes are easy. This my friends is a must do. You’ll see the real Philippines.

The standard price for a motorcyle is 300php/day but you can get them down to 250php will little effort. I went though about one tank of fuel which I think is about 2L. Fuel is cheap here, about 40php/Litre depending on where you buy it.

7. Lambug Beach

The first place I went to check out was Lambug beach, on the way to Kawasan Falls. It was okay. What I thought was better was Badian island which was a small detour off the main road but connected to the beach anyway.

There was nothing to do there, just awesome scenery. Actually, Badian Island is a resort so I didn’t even go onto it.

Awesome things to do in moalboal

8. Kawasan Waterfalls

My next stop was Kawasan Waterfalls. I went on a Sunday so it was pretty crowded. I did a full review here…

Awesome things to do in moalboal

9. Free Diving

This is something I didn’t do (leaning SCUBA was enough for me) but met a few people who were and they all said that Moalboal was a great place to learn, probably for the same reasons as SCUBA – its cheap and lots to see just nearby.

10. Cangkalagnog Falls

Cangkalagnog Falls is south of Moalboal. I went there on the day that I went motorbiking in the countryside. I enjoyed it much more that Kawasan, so much so I wrote a seperate post for it.

Cangkalanog Falls Review - Survive Travel

Awesome things to do in moalboal

11. White Beach

The last thing on this list of things to do in Moalboal is to go to White Beach. White beach is one of those things that everyone says you should do in Moalboal. Personally I think it is a bit over-rated, but i still say go there. The snorkelling there is good and you can chill on the beach and grab some lunch.

Getting To Moal Boal

First get yourself to Cebu City, probably by plane. Once in Cebu City you need to get to the South Bus Terminal. According to my taxi driver there are two bus companies going to Moalboal. I just told him to drop me at the best one, with no specifics on what makes it best. I can’t even remember what the company was called but it was close to the main South Bus Terminal.

Just asks someone for the bus to Moalboal. Loads of people speak great English in the Philippines so getting around is really easy. My bus ride took about 3 hours and cost 107psp.

There is a short pit stop about halfway at the town of … so if you need to use the bathroom that’s the time to do it.

I did see other buses, nicer ones with air-con and wifi. I think they costs not that much more, but I just jumped on the first one that came along.

Nothing really noteworthy about the journey itself except to sit near a window because there is some great scenery. I messed up on this one which is why there is a lack of pictures.

White Beach Review - Moal Boal - Survive Travel

This post is a White Beach review, Moalboal. It includes directions, costs and other useful information, as well as my own opinion.

Cost: 5php on the road on the way in, then another 10php to visit the beach.

Address: 8km out of Moalboal.

White beach is one of those things in Moalboal that everyone says you should go to… so I did.

It was a nice ride in alond the coast and not far.

I Got there within 20 minutes.

Actually I wasn’t that impressed by the beach itself. I’ve seen much better, but it was still nice.

A decent stretch of white sand, hence the name White Beach.

There are some local style restaurants and you can eat in the huts whilest overlooking the ocean.

Eat lunch (or whatever) in the small huts while gaxing over the ocean.

The snorkelling at White Beach is very good. Unfortunately I don’t have an underwater camera so I couldn’t take any pictures.

White Beach in Moalboal is worth the trip if you are in the area. It is nice because it has the combination of a decent beach and snorkelling, whilst in Pangasama you get the snorkelling but no beach, and in Lambug you get the beach but no snorkelling.

Actually, I didn’t enter the water in Lambug so maybe there is snorkelling there.
