Binangawan Falls Review, Camiguin, Philippines

Binangawan Falls review - The walk in - Survive Travel

This post is a Binangawan Falls review.

Binangawan Falls is a waterfall found inland of Camiguin Island in the Philippines, north of the coastal town of Sagay.

This Binangawan Falls review includes personal opinions and useful information including directions, pictures, costs, etc.

Right Picture: Hiking to Binangawan Falls.

Featured Picture: Binangawan Falls.

Cost(s): Free if self guided. 600php for a guide (at least that is what we were offered).

Address: North of the coastal town of Sagay, Camiguin Island, Philippines.

Binangawan Falls Review, Camiguin

Since I had hiked to Katibawasan Falls the day before I had no intention of going to Binangawan Falls. I was just riding along and say the sign so I decided it would be a nice break from riding around.

I followed the road all the way to the end where it stops… literally the end of the road. Apparently they where building a road all the way to the falls, but then UNESCO came in and said its a heritage site, so they just stopped work. I’m not sure how true this is, its just what someone told me.

Binangawan Falls Review - end of the road - Survive Travel

The end of the road, literally.

Luckily there where two guys there that pointed me in the right direction of where to go. I ended up on the wrong path, but along the way ran into a trio of Germans, who were also same (wrong) path as me. Together we went to try to find the real path.

We ended up going the wrong way another two or three times.

Eventually we came across another group (also German), who had taken a different wrong path, but told us that their hotel staff told them to just follow the power lines, so we did.

About an hour later of pretty interesting jungle trekking we got to Binganawan Falls. It was totally worth the hike, although I like hikes others may not agree.

Binangawan Falls Review - Serenity - Survive Travel

It really was a surreal location. Little birds flying around, very refreshing (read cold) water, trickles of water coming off the vegetation, etc.

After a little dip we did the one hour hike back and then went our separate ways.

Getting to Binganawan Falls in Camiguin

Finding the correct path to Binganawan Falls took a little time but once we where on it it was pretty straight forward.

Park your bike at the end of the bridge then look behind you. There is a path that lead up the side of the hill.

Binangawan Falls Review - Path - Survive Travel

From the end of the road look behind you. There is the path you need to climb up.

Go up the path and take the first trail right, so you go along the ridge of the hill. It follows some black pipe for a little while, but then forks off. Follow the power lines!

You will go over the hill. I remember thinking a few times, “Why are we moving up?”. Also, you can hear water below. I think this is a smaller, but closer water-fall.

Binangawan Falls Review - Survive Travel

Taken on the way to the falls – not during the trek.

In any case, to get to Binganawan Falls just keep following underneath the power lines. Once the powerlines stop there will not be any confusion of which track to take.

You will go over and under stuff. Don’t worry, you are on the right path.

Binangawan Falls Review - Sunset - Survive Travel

Visiting Binangawan Falls took a lot longer than I initially expected so I caught the sun going down on the way back.

Be careful. Some of it is pretty close to the edge and a misplaced foot could see you falling off!

11 Awesome Things to do in Puducherry, India

Things to do in Puducherry - Arikamedu Ruins - Survive Travel

Discover 11 awesome things to do in Puducherry.

Puducherry is in the Tamil Nadu region of India, approximately halfway between Madurai and Chennai.

This overview of things to do in Puducherry gives a short review of each of the “things to do” as well as links to more detailed reviews (where applicable) which include directions, pictures and other useful information.

Right Picture: Arikamedu Ruins.

Featured Picture: Joan of Arc park with the church in the background.

Things to do in Puducherry
1. Promenade Beach

This is not a swimming beach (at least I didn’t see anyone swimming in it) but is probably better known for its “beauty”. It is quite a long stretch. I’m almost certain that they have put the sand there for effect.

Things to do in Puducherry - Promenade Beach - Survive Travel

The sand doesn’t meet the water. I think the sand was put there for effect.

2. Gandhi Memorial

This memorial for the respected Gandhi can be found along the Promenade.

Things to do in Puducherry - Ghandi Memorial - Survive Travel

Gandhi is everywhere in India.

3. Old Lighthouse

All you can do is take a picture from the outside. There is also a new lighthouse (on I assume is in use) which I didn’t check out.

Things to do in Puducherry - Old Lighthouse - Survive Travel

Just point and click. Nothing else to be done at the Old Lighthouse.

Need somewhere to sleep while visiting Puducherry in India? Find your perfect accommodation no matter what your budget.

4. Puducherry Museum

Not a bad little museum. You are not aloud to take pictures inside but there are a few small exhibitions including rocks, weapons, transportation, money, French stuff, etc. 50INR for foreigners.

Things to do in Puducherry - Puducherry Museum - Survive Travel

At least the museum is interactive, i.e., you are allowed inside it.

5. Auroville

When I first looked at Auroville as a place to go I glazed over it, but since I was in the area I decided to go. I am happy I did. It is a pretty impressive thing they are doing there.

6. Beach Market

I took this picture during the day but at night it comes alive with snack foods and other stuff for sale.

Things to do in Puducherry - Beach Market - Survive Travel

The beach market opens at night.

7. Arikamedu Ruins

I hired a motorbike for the day (250INR) to see Auroville so also used it to check out these ruins which I read about in the museum (#4).

Things to do in Puducherry - Arikamedu Ruins - Survive Travel

Arikamedu Ruins ain’t no Machi Pichu but they are ruins none-the-less.

8. Bharathi Park

Thuis park is located just north of the beach. It is a nice park. Not huge.

Things to do in Puducherry - Bharathi Park - Survive Travel

A monument inside Bharathi Park.

9. Joan of Arc Park

The gate was not locked but it was closed. Does it mean you can or can not enter? Its just a small park with a statue of Joan of Arc. I’m not sure of the significance. I guess the French put it there back in the day.

10. Puducherry Promenade

At night traffic is banned and it fills up with people. I’m not sure if that happens every night or just the weekend. This was on a Friday night.

A crowded promenade on a warm Friday night.

11. Puducherry Botanical Garden

Puducherry Botanical Gardens was nowhere near as good as I thought it would be, and to be honest I didn’t have very high expectations to begin with.

Getting To Puducherry

I caught a bus from Madurai since a train would have meant have to swap halfway through.

I wanted an air-conditioned sleeper bus but apparently it broke down so I got the non-aircon sleeper. Luckily it was night and with the windows open I didn’t need the air-con anyway.

It took six and a half hours to get to Puducherry from Madurai and we arrived at about 0500. Luckily it was faily close to the Hotel Sarvamangalam Inn where I had booked my first night.

Mambajao Town Review, Camiguin, Philippines – Survive Travel

Mambajao Town Review - Streets - Survive Travel

This post is a Mambajao Town review.

Mambajao is the most populated town in Camiguin and is also where the airport is located (the closest town to it).

This Mambajao Town review includes personal opinions and useful information including directions, pictures, costs, etc.

Right Picture: The streets of Mambajao.

Featured Picture: From the watefront of Mambajao.

For the quick version of this Mambajao Town review you can scroll to the bottom of this post and look in the reviews. Mine is the first one :) .

Mambajao Town Review, Camiguin, Philippines

I flew into Camiguin from Cebu so booked my first nights accommodation in Mambajao. I ended up staying for four nights.

Although the biggest town in Camiguin, Mambajao is not a big town. I probably walked around it a half a dozen times during my stay there, mostly finding food.

On my morning of arrival, while waiting for my room to be made-up (I arrived pretty early) I took a stroll to the ocean front. It is a kind of nice scenery.

Mambajao Town Review - Ocean - Survive Travel

Waterfront Mambajao.

Need somewhere to sleep while visiting Camiguin in the Philippines? Find your perfect accommodation no matter what your budget.

I wouldn’t say I was overrun by a variety of food, but there is enough there to keep you fed. It is mainly the normal Filipino type fare – silog, fried chicken and not much vegetables. For cheap food (with some vegetables) go to the market. Another option is the Chinese restaurant next to the GV Hotel. It is all you can eat, although you can just order normally also. It’s pretty cheap.

One of the best places I found is near the airport, just to the right of it (as you look towards it). A roadside eatery with decent food and very cheap.

Another good Filipino eatery is just outside town, in the opposite direction from the airport. Past the Italian place there is a small group of shops. To the left of the bakery is a little eatery. The owners are very nice.

Other than the ocean front and the market there isn’t really much to see (or do) in Mambajao. Luckily there is lots to see on Camiguin as a whole and since it is such a small island, Mambajao is a pretty good place to be situated.

I got a haircut. Cost me 50php, although I also tipped 50php.

There’s a few clothes shops about also and some other little stores to look at.

By the way, the “j” in Mambajao is an “h” sound (from Spanish origins I’m guessing).

All in all there’s not a whole lot to do in Mambajao, but it is a good place to base yourself with a cheap hotel (GV Hotel), food nearby and rent a motorcycle to see the rest of the island. The other area to stay in would be around Yumbing (West of Mambajao) which has all the beach resorts. There are some cheap options there too and a bigger variety of food.

There was one thing that annoyed me a little about Mambajao and that is all the one way streets (for vehicles). Took me 10 minutes to figure out how to go west out of the town!

Getting to Mambajao in Camiguin

I flew into the airport from Cebu and then took a non-public jeepney to the GV Hotel (in Mambajao) for 20php.

I think your best bet, no matter where you are on the island, is to get a public jeepney or a private ride of some kind.

Katibawasan Falls Review, Camiguin, Philippines – Survive Travel

katibawasan falls review -prison - survive travel

This post is a Katibawasan Falls review.

Katibawasan Falls is a 250ft hight waterfall located south of the town of Pandan (which is east of Mambajao) on the island of Camiguin in the Philippines.

This Katibawasan Falls review includes personal opinions and useful information including directions, pictures, costs, etc.

Right Picture: On the way to Katibawasan Falls – The local prison.

Featured Picture: Katibawasan Falls.

For the quick version of this Katibawasan Falls review you can scroll to the bottom of this post and look in the reviews. Mine is the first one :) .

Cost(s): 30php for an adult. Slightly less for seniors and children.

Address: South of Pandan on Camiguin Island.

Katibawasan Falls Review, Camiguin

I went to Katibawasan Falls waterfalls on my first day in Camiguin. To begin with I had no intention of going. After checking into the GV Hotel I had a nap and then went for a walk. I ended up walking all the way to the Katibawasan falls, about 4km one way.

I think maybe subconsciously I knew I was going to end up doing it. I had sent a picture to a girl and she replied with “you look fat”. It was a joke (I think) but all jokes have a little truth to them, so maybe thats why I decided to hike it.

On the way to Katibawasan Falls.

Anyway, it was a good hike. I made a few inquiries along the way about potential places to rent long term, and saw some cool scenery.

The waterfall itself was nice also. Not crowded, and very refreshing.

As I do, I went to go directly under the waterfall, which apparently is not allowed and I got whistled at. I guess that is what the rope was for. I kind of “do not cross this line” sign. They should probably actually put a sign hanging off the rope.

Outside of the Katibawasan waterfalls entry there are a few shops selling this crispy pancake type thing. They drizzle some chocolate on it. Not bad. Not spectacular, but worth a try since it is only 10php. I can not remember what it is called, kicit, or something like that.

katibawasan falls review - vertical - survive travel

It was hard to get the whole thing in one frame, but the good ‘ole Huawei (my China Smartphone) came through in the end.

I asked about a jeepney back but I didn’t fully grasp what the guy was saying. It didn’t seem to me like there where public jeepneys you could take. I think people just hired them to go there, and then they wait and take you back. I could be wrong about this though. I ended up walking back also. Some Pinoy (Nino was his name) and his brother gave me a lift on the back of their moto about 3/4 of a km (until their turn-off to their Baranguay) which was nice of them.

katibawasan falls review -Snack - survive travel

They sell these out the front of Katibawasan Falls. 10php. A kind of crispy pancake with chocolate sauce drizzled on. Not bad.

Getting to Katibawasan Falls in Camiguin

I hiked it from the GV Hotel and, although I didn’t take note of the time and made some pit stops along the way, I’m gonna say it would be about an hour of solid walking.

Surrounding area at Katibawasan Falls.

I can’t bee 100% sure about how much a lift would be but I think the guy I talked to said 100php.

My advice, other than walking, would be to rent a motorbike and ride their yourself.

GV Hotel Review, Camiguin, Philippines – Survive Travel

GV Hotel Review Camiguin - Tarrif - Survive Travel

This post is a GV Hotel review.

The GV Hotel in Camiguin is part of the GV Hotel Chain which is in numerous cities all over the Philippines. This GV Hotel is in the town of Mambajao on the island of Camiguin which is off the north coast of Mindinao in the Philippines.

This GV Hotel review includes personal opinions and useful information including directions, pictures, costs, etc.

Right Picture: Price list for the GV Hotel in Camiguin.

Featured Picture: Out the front of the GV Hotel.

For the quick version of this GV Hotel review you can scroll to the bottom of this post and look in the reviews. Mine is the first one :) .

Price Range: See the price list picture. According to the girl at the front desk they have been on promo rates for a while with no end in sight.

Address: Burgos Street , Mambajao, Philippines

GV Hotel Review, Mambajao, Camiguin

Ever since that time I got caught out without accommodation in Xian (China) I always book my first night, but only one night in case the place I book is a dump. Luckily, the GV Hotel in Camiguin was not one of those places (a dump I mean) – but it wasn’t exactly luxury either.

The GV Hotel in Camiguin was definitely one of those “you get what you pay for” budget hotels.

The reason I chose it (besides the cost effectiveness) was its location, which is in the most populated city on Camiguin and nearest the airport.

There’s a bunch of guys that hang around the front… touts. I managed to strike a deal for a motorbike – 300php per day for a minimum two days. Others quoted me up to 500php a day. They also try to be your guide, and one of them even tried to sell me hookers (tactfully). Don’t worry kids, I politely declined.

I got a double. My room is a bit smaller than the ones in the picture which I took in a twin room.

They have two tariff rates as you can see by the picture. I asked what made it promo, and the girl said that they have been on promo for a while now, with no predicted end in sight (my words, her meaning.)

The day before flying out of Kota Kinabalu I decided to rid myself of my towel/sarong that I got from Sri Lanka but hardly ever use, since every hotel gives you a towel. Well guess what, this one doesn’t. They do give your two hotel size bars of soap, but that is it.

GV Hotel Review Camiguin - Twin - Survive Travel

Twin Room.

Bed is comfortable enough. Two pillows, air-con, cable TV and good electro door locks (card entry).

Shower pressure is good, but not hot water.

Free wifi in the lobby (signals is not bad considering it is a small island in the Philippines), but it does not reach the rooms.

No restaurant on site but there’s lots of stuff in town which is a five minute walk away, unless you feel like all you can eat Chinese which is 30 seconds up the road (you don’t have to get all you can eat, they have a normal menu also and the price is very reasonable.)

One big negative for me was a lack of power-points in the room. They had one for the TV and one for the air-con. No extras to charge my… anything.

Aparrently on Sundays the whole island has no electricity but the GV hotel still does so that’s good.

After two nights I changed to a fan room (I prefer fans over aircon) which I was much happier with. It was about the same size but the window didn’t face the back of the aircon’s from the other rooms so it was less noisy and could get some natural light. Also, closer to the roof. Still only two power-points (one for the TV and one for the Fan) but luckily one of them worked without having to put the card in the slot so that was good.

The TV reception isn’t as good, but on the roof I managed to nab a hotel towel that they were hanging to dry. They have the towels, how come they don’t come with the room? I thought maybe they just forgot in the first room, but the second one didn’t have one either.

All the window of the rooms face a collective area, which mean you can hear everything from the rooms next to you.

For the price the GV Hotel in Camiguin is pretty good. There’s no way I’d pay their full price quote, but since they seem to be on permanent promotion its a good deal.

GV Hotel Review Camiguin - bathroom - Survive Travel

No hot water but great water pressure.

Book your stay at the GV Hotel or other accommodation in Camiguin.

Getting to the GV Hotel in Camiguin

From the airport I caught a tricycle/jeepney (I can remember which – but it wasn’t a public one). It cost 20php to go to the door of the GV Hotel.

I guess if you caught the ferry in then you need to get from Benoni to Mambajao. There are lots of transport options out the front of the port.

Have you been to the GV Hotel in Camiguin before? Help out other readers and leave your GV Hotel review below, and if you know of more or updated information or even if you just want to say hi then please leave a comment :) .

6 Awesome Things to Do in Cebu City, Philippines – Survive Travel

Discover six awesome things to do in Cebu City.

Awesome things to do in Cebu City

Cebu City is the capital of Cebu Island and the former capital of the Philippines. It is considered the “queen city of the south”.

This overview of things to do in Cebu City gives a short review of each of the “things to do” as well as links to more detailed reviews which include directions, pictures and other useful information.

Awesome Things to do in Cebu City
1. Museo Sugbo

Museo Sugbo is one of a number of museums which you can visit in Cebu City, but is the only one I visited. I found it to be quite an interesting museum and I learned a lot about the history of Cebu. The site of the museum used to be a jail.

2. Fort San Pedro

This is a nice place to visit to “get out of the city” without actually leaving the city. It is not a big fort but it has a couple of galleries and then you can take a nice stroll along the fort wall.

Awesome Things to do in Cebu City - Survive Travel

Walking along the wall reminded me of walking around the wall of Dubrovnic in Croatia, but nowhere near as impressive.

3. Carbon Market

Carbon Market, from what I saw, is mainly a fresh foods market but also has some other stuff. The closer you venture to the river the more local life you will discover. It’s a good look into how the underprivileged Cebuano’s of the city live. I wouldn’t venture there at night.

4. Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary

The Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary was a real treat for me. Out of the city but not too far is this small garden/museum. For 100php you get entry and a very knowledgeable curator who takes you around and shares with you his passion.

There is also an art gallery where some of the pictures are mosaics made entirely from pieces of butterfly wings, and they a really good.

5. Shopping

I’m not much of a shopper but if that’s you’re thing then you won’t be disappointed in Cebu City. There’s no shortage of big malls and also a massive amount of shops lining the streets.

6. Party

Alas, in my “old age” I don’t hit the bars and clubs anywhere near as much as I used to, especially when traveling solo. Never-the-less the night-life in Cebu City is pumping every night of the week. Just head towards Mango Square and around it you’ll find karaoke, disco’s, live bands, restaurants, nudie bars etc.

For those of you you want something a bit less intense (such as myself) then there’s plenty of “dive bars” down the side streets. Something for everyone.

Getting To Cebu City

Being a major city Cebu City is easily accessible by air, land and sea.

If arriving by plane you will land in Lapu Lapu which is approximately a 300php taxi ride from the city center. Pubic transport to the city is possible but not worth the hassle or time it would take as it involves more than one jeepney change.

The port is closer still and goes in and out from most other major ports in the Philippines. You can even catch a ferry all the from/to Manila.
