Vinyl has outsold Paid Streaming this Year
That’s right, according to Billboard (now featuring Vinyl charts!) Vinyl sales are up 53% from this time last year, and 260% since 2009. Seriously. There’s even a chart:
The most unlikely format come-back…perhaps the first real format comeback of any left-behind media format on this scale. Call it a protest, but as the music industry has somehow survived through the last 10 years of digging it’s own grave, prosecuting and ignoring digital media with no clue how to monetize it, the diaspora of music lovers, even casual ones, has gone back to physical analog reproduction.
This isn’t the first wave of some continuing pattern of analog regression in the face of mass digitization of daily life. This is a long time coming. Records, cared for, sound fucking amazing, they are beautiful literal transcriptions of sound waves in carved in silky spirals, a clever yet functional sound sculpture.
Music is a perversion, and us hoo-mans have got ourselves a vinyl fetish.
Let’s make it stick.
Go out and buy a record today, they are mystifying objects, much more than a hobby. Collecting vinyl records is an obsession that grips your ears for life.
