Writing Process Blog Hop

What am I working on?  My latest book, Divided Heart: Queens of Kings Book 2 was released on February 18.  I’m currently in the process of promoting it and simultaneously beginning my story boarding process on the third and final installment  of Heart and Kenneth Searlington’s journey together. How does my work differ from others of its genre? Wow, that’s a tough question.  I don’t know I can say for certain how my work differs from everyone else in interracial romance, but I’ll share some of the things readers have passed on to me recently.  My readers say that they love the element of suspense and mystery I put into my work.  They of course are dedicated romance readers, but they’ve come to appreciate that little added twist that I add to my work.  When I create a story,  there’s always a secondary story, or at least a story that appears secondary in the beginning then turns in to something important as the story evolves.  I like keeping readers on their toes.  It’s fun for me. lol Why do I write/create what I do?  In my opinion, there’s nothing that’s as heartbreaking, comical, and exciting as watching two people fall in love.  Where else can I get all of these different types of entertainment and sentiment in one place? How does my writing/creating process work?  Music in my ears, coffee on the table, and a blank page on my laptop.  That’s generally all it takes for me to sit down and let the characters in my head run a muck. ~~LaQuette~~

Divided Heart: Queens of Kings Book 2

Book Trailer Blurb: She broke his heart…to rebuild his soul. The last two years of Heart MacKenzie Searlington’s life have been a constant forward motion of change. She’s been promoted to NYPD captain of the seventy-fourth precinct in Brooklyn, a job she never wanted, but is slowly finding her way through with the help of a dedicated second in command and a house full of exemplary officers. Married to the sexy and powerful mogul, Kenneth Searlington, Heart is living all of the dreams she never knew to ask for before she fell in love with the man that stole her heart. Although Kenneth bathes her in his love and devotion, insecurities from the past still haunt her and cast a dark veil over their union. Kenneth Searlington knows only one thing, he worships his wife. He has a singular purpose: to love her as hard as he can for the rest of their lives and to neutralize any threat that dares to come up against them. But how does he protect them when that threat comes from the woman he loves? Thrown by a devastating loss, Heart allows pain and despair to drive a wedge so large between them they may never be able to recover. Pushed beyond his limits, excluded and taken for granted, Kenneth has to decide whether to allow darker urges to control him, or to use his rage to fight for the one thing he adores, Heart. Can they mend the rift, or will a divided heart end their legendary love?

Heart of the Matter: Queens of Kings Book 1

Book Trailer Blurb: Heart “Mac” MacKenzie is a tough police lieutenant in the rough streets of Brooklyn, New York. She’s a strong leader who doesn’t mind getting in the trenches with the men and women she leads at the seventy-four precinct. Her house, her people, and her family—both blue and blood—are the only things that matter. She would live and die for the blue wall that shields her from a traumatic past. When her captain assigns her a high-profile kidnapping case that she doesn’t want, and insists she allows the missing girl’s irritatingly sexy uncle to tag along during the investigation, her blood boils. Mac has no choice but to do what she always does when things get out of control, lay down the law—her law. Kenneth Searlington is a rich playboy from the Upper East Side of Manhattan. With stunning looks and an unlimited source of wealth, he’s used to being the center of everyone’s attention, especially the women that he comes in contact with. His life is fun and carefree until his niece, Merridith is kidnapped, and he’s forced to seek out the help of his godfather an NYPD police captain, David Porter. Afraid and frustrated, Kenneth defers to his uncle’s expertise and his promise that he’s putting his best cop on the case, Lieutenant MacKenzie. When Kenneth discovers “Mac” is actually a sexy as sin lady cop with a fiery temper to match, he decides mixing a little business with pleasure might be just the thing he needs to distract him from long-standing family issues that are trying to crawl their way back into the forefront of his life. Each used to having their own way, can these two work together long enough to bring an innocent child home? Or will they settle their differences and unyielding attraction in a more carnal way and get right down to the heart of the matter?

Review: (Watch Me) Unmask You

(Watch Me) Unmask You by Avril Ashton My rating: 5 of 5 stars This is the third book in this (Watch Me)series and boy what a follow-up. As usual, the sex in the book is hot. I think by now we all know that Ms. Ashton can write the hell out of a sex scene, but honestly, that’s not what even draws you to this book. For me the intricate weaving of the story that reaches as far back as Ms. Ashton’s Sinners’ series is what really did it for me. If you’re into mystery and intricate plot lines, mixed in with hot sexy times between brazenly bold men, then (Watch Me) Unmask you is definitely the book for you. View all my reviews

#1 Spot Divided Heart: Queens of Kings Book 2

My book baby, Divided Heart, release yesterday evening.  It was a surprise to my readers that were asking for pre-orders.  My publisher Hot Ink Press figured why do pre-orders when we can just release it.  :) Although excited about the early release, releasing a book always brings a certain amount–who am I kidding, it makes me sick to my stomach with worry.  I worry about if I’ve told the best story I can, if my readers will understand what I’ve written, will anyone connect to my words, or will the work just be an epic waste of time that turns into a monumental fail. Yes, I’m confident in my ability to write a story, but that in know way translates in to being convinced that other people will embrace my words.  So when release day rolls around, I get sick with nerves and that sickness usually lasts until I my readers tell me what they think of it. Today I was floored when a reader told me to run over to Amazon to check out my ranking.  I honestly thought I was going to find myself  crying in a ball after being so disappointed by whatever Amazon had to tell me.  I did not however, think for one moment that I would find that pretty little orange ribbon that said #1 Best Seller next to my pretty little book. The only thing I can say after such an amazing experience is thank you.  Thank you to everyone that supported this effort from my publisher and publishing house family, to my immediate family, friends, and most importantly, my readers.  You guys did this.  You guys made this possible.  So stand up, put your glasses in the air and yell, “Hell Yeah!”  Because this…yeah this is all you. Smooches, –LaQuette–

“Joey’s” Choice Interview with Piper Kay

LaQuette: Hey Piper, welcome back to my blog.  You know I’m always happy to have you here.  Today we’re going to be chatting about your new short story, “Joey’s Choice.”  Tell me, what’s so different about this book compared to every other Piper Kay title we’ve read? Piper: HA! Well the first, and very obvious reason, is that it’s not an erotica story. There is no sex, not even a little smooch. Can you believe that? ~picks LaQuette up from the floor~ The other is that it’s a story for young adults and teenagers, and parents, aunts, uncles, grandma, cousins…well it’s a story really for everyone, but it doesn’t include “intimate relations” between the characters. <<Piper’s attempt at toning it down. haha LaQuette:  You are so correct, I really did fall out of my seat when I found out you were putting together a Young Adult shot story.  You are one of the most recognizable names in the M/M erotic romance genre.  So much so that some of us call you “THE” Piper Kay (and by some of us I mean me, ‘cause you know I’m a hopeless fan girl).  You are known for your spicy sex scenes, how different for you was it to pen something that has no sex in it?  Was it easier, harder, did you worry your readers wouldn’t like it because of the lack of explicit sex in it? Piper: It was a terrifying and traumatic event. Kidding, but it did scare the hell out of me. I had no idea how hard it would be. I was worried that it wouldn’t be taken serious by any new readers first off, especially if they heard I also write M/M erotica. Second was that I didn’t want to disappoint any of my established readers because I love them and would hate to do that. Plus they are so kind, they might just tell me they liked it so my feelings didn’t get hurt or something (they are awesome like that) But… the biggest challenge was to myself. I needed to see, no, take that back. I needed to KNOW if it was the explicit scenes in previous books that sold them or not. I had no idea because I had never tried one without it, so I wasn’t sure. My friends, whom a lot of them are also my readers, told me that the scenes weren’t […]
