“Joey’s” Choice Interview with Piper Kay

LaQuette: Hey Piper, welcome back to my blog.  You know I’m always happy to have you here.  Today we’re going to be chatting about your new short story, “Joey’s Choice.”  Tell me, what’s so different about this book compared to every other Piper Kay title we’ve read? Piper: HA! Well the first, and very obvious reason, is that it’s not an erotica story. There is no sex, not even a little smooch. Can you believe that? ~picks LaQuette up from the floor~ The other is that it’s a story for young adults and teenagers, and parents, aunts, uncles, grandma, cousins…well it’s a story really for everyone, but it doesn’t include “intimate relations” between the characters. <<Piper’s attempt at toning it down. haha LaQuette:  You are so correct, I really did fall out of my seat when I found out you were putting together a Young Adult shot story.  You are one of the most recognizable names in the M/M erotic romance genre.  So much so that some of us call you “THE” Piper Kay (and by some of us I mean me, ‘cause you know I’m a hopeless fan girl).  You are known for your spicy sex scenes, how different for you was it to pen something that has no sex in it?  Was it easier, harder, did you worry your readers wouldn’t like it because of the lack of explicit sex in it? Piper: It was a terrifying and traumatic event. Kidding, but it did scare the hell out of me. I had no idea how hard it would be. I was worried that it wouldn’t be taken serious by any new readers first off, especially if they heard I also write M/M erotica. Second was that I didn’t want to disappoint any of my established readers because I love them and would hate to do that. Plus they are so kind, they might just tell me they liked it so my feelings didn’t get hurt or something (they are awesome like that) But… the biggest challenge was to myself. I needed to see, no, take that back. I needed to KNOW if it was the explicit scenes in previous books that sold them or not. I had no idea because I had never tried one without it, so I wasn’t sure.
