Bent Comics Convention

An event that I will be taking part in this coming Sunday in Los Angeles.

Press Release:

Los Angeles Welcomes Gay Comic Con

Think you know comic book fans? Think again. On Sunday, December 5, 2010,

Los Angeles will play host to the first annual BENT-CON, a convention celebrating

LGBT comic book creators and fans. From 12:00–7:00 PM, fans will have a chance to meet and interact with professional and independent artists and writers representing all levels and interests of the comic book industry.

The brainchild of Dave Davenport, creator of the edgy Hard to Swallow anthology series, and Sean-Z, creator of the otherworldly MYTH series, BENT-CON represents something of a dream come true for its founders.

"Thanks to organizations like Prism Comics and fan communities on the Internet, the visibility of LGBT comics creators has really grown," Davenport said. "It's a great time to bring the queer comics community together in one place for a few hours to really celebrate what we're doing."

Sean-Z agrees. "Having a presence at the big conventions is important, but having a space and the time to really interact with the LGBT comics community is going to be amazing," he said.

Prism Comics, a non-profit organization that promotes LGBT comic book creators and readers, will be exhibiting and selling a wide variety of gay comics at BENT-CON. Charles "Zan" Christensen, founder of Prism Comics and the new LGBT comics

publisher Northwest Press, said, "Gay comic book fans are loyal, passionate and very supportive of independent artists. A convention like BENT-CON will give fans an opportunity to meet each other, catch up with their favorite artists and discover new ones."

In addition to Davenport, Sean-Z and Prism Comics, BENT-CON will welcome a whole host of LGBT creators, including Brad Rader (Fogtown), Jon Macy (Teleny & Camille),

Michael Derry (Troy Comics), Steve MacIsaac (Shirtlifter), Jeff Krell (Jayson Goes to Hollywood) and many more. Each will be selling comics and signing for fans.

BENT-CON will take place on Sunday, December 5 from 12:00–7:00 PM at 4232 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90029 (located next door to The Faultline Bar).

BENT-CON is a free event and open to all comic book fans, gay or straight.

For more information, become a fan of BENT-CON on Facebook.

Glamazonia Preview!

Glamazonia-Preview

A few months ago I illustrated a one page short for my pal Justin Hall's upcoming Glamazonia the Uncanny Super-Tranny collection.

The publisher, Northwest Press, is ramping up to release the book in December. To that end, they're released a 30 page preview that includes my complete strip as well as selections from various stories throughout the book.

Anyone who is a regular comics shop customer should pre-order from their shop THIS week, as most shops tend to shy away from gay material. The Diamond catalogue number is OCT101093. If there are not enough pre-orders, Diamond may decline to carry the book, so if you're a regular comics buyer and are interested in getting a copy, I'd do it earlier rather than later.

Facebook Page: Retailers

Just as an FYI, I've been posting links to individual retailers who carry my books over on the Shirtlifter Facebook page. I'll post an updated, consolidated list over here after I finish consolidating all the information.

As always, if anyone knows of a store that doesn't carry my books but you think should, either put a bug in their ear or email me the contact information. But honestly, it carries much more weight if you ask for my book than if I do. You're their customer, and giving them a guaranteed sale, while I'm just another guy jostling for their limited retail space.

Best American Comics 2010

Best American Comics 2010

I collaborated with my husband Todd on a comics strip a few years ago called "Ex-Communication". It was published in the second volume of "The Book of Boy Trouble" anthology edited by my pals Robert Kirby and David Kelly and published by Green Candy press.

A copy of that somehow ended up in the hands of Neil Gaiman, who chose our strip to be included in the 2010 edition of Harcourt-Mifflin's "Best American Comics" anthology. The book is finally due to be released at the end of this month, and ...

Out In Print: SHIRTLIFTER Review

Wayne Courtois has a very positive review of SHIRTLIFTER #1 - 3 up on the Out In Print blog. He picked up on some things I worked pretty hard on, which I don't remember any other reviewers commenting on. It's always gratifying when I get external verification that maybe I'm not as insane as I think I am.

San Diego Comic-Con 2010

ComicCon Banner

This is my section of the display banner that will be up behind the Prism Comics Booth at San Diego Comic Con this year - a mosaic featuring different creators who will be selling work at the booth during the Convention. The art is a cropped and recolored scene from the second book of my "Unpacking".

The Con runs from Thursday July 22 to Sunday July 25th. As usual, I will be at Comic Con for the Saturday and Sunday only, selling comics at the Prism Booth and appearing on the following...

Go Read: Zan Christensen on IPad Discrimination

I don'r much use this blog for linking to current news, but Charles "Zan" Christensen has a really interesting and important news article over at Prism Comics on indie and LGBT creators not being allowed to sell content via Apple. I've been a pretty avid Apple user for years, but this isn't the first example of their heavy-handed approach to content control. I've sporadically thought about digital content distribution over the past year or so, but both Kindle and Ipad have far too many...
